Title: The EMP 2005 Pop Conference
Post by: Gazoo on February 17, 2005, 11:33:07 AM
Sorry if this thread reeks of self-importance -- but a couple of you were interested in the deets.  The Experience Music Project has posted its tentative schedule of events for April 14 - 17, and despite my expectation of a trap-door, I'm still on the sked.

Full info on the 2005 Pop Conference is at http://www.emplive.com/visit/education/popConf.asp

My panel is here, at the very end of things:

 Sunday, April 17, 2005

9:00 - 10:30

Sonic Masculinity

Mica Hilson, “"Attack of the Synth-Pop Zombies: Affect and White Male Identity in 1980s Electronic Music" ”
Joseph McCombs, “Whoops, I Mean Girl: Toying With Sexual Identity in Song”
Gabriel Solis, “'Workin' Hard, Hardly Workin', Hey Man, You Know Me': Tom Waits and the Theatrics of Masculinity ”
Griffin Woodworth, “Prince, Miles, and Maceo: Horns and the Performance of Black Masculinity.”

Venue: JBL Theater

This is a mixed bag: being on early Sunday morning takes some of the pressure off, but it also means I won't have much of an audience.  In fact, it's entirely possible that there won't be anyone in attendance at all.  But it allows me to pick up some pointers from the other presenters, and if I fare horribly, at least I can get on my return flight without actually facing anyone.

Complicates my flight plans, though, to have Sunday activity to contend with.

I here I was thinking it was Sunday NIGHT, followed by the after-party

I'm considering flying up... will let ya know.

Does JetBlue fly to SeaTac? if not, I'm sure Southwest has cheap fares.

Check Alaska, too. They fly out of Oakland just like SW, and have much more civilized flights (i.e. no cattle call).

Thanks! I know they always got raves for their food, though I doubt there's a full meal on an Oak-SeaTac flight.  JetBlue, BTW does not fly from here to there.

Hey trust me on this one, if we're flying OAK to SEA the only way to go is Alaska.  I hope to go.

I can very likely arrange a stay at my friend best friend from college Steve's house for anyone who wants to go.  If Steve listened to KFOG he'd definitely be a member of our forum.  He formed his own record label in order to promote a couple of local unsigned bands that he was friends with & while that enterprise is somewhat defunct now he has most of the equipment in his dining room.  If PoC goes maybe we could record some tracks!  Anyway he lives by himself in a 3 bedroom.  And he's pretty much up for anything at all times.

that's all the push i need! i checked alaska - rt flights are $160, leaving thursday or friday, returning sunday. i'm sure there are cheaper deals elsewhere?? southwest is possible for about $20 cheaper (after taxes).

ETA: actually, i will most likely be flying in from jfk, so i'll leave the alaska-ing to you folk...

Dearies,

As I work out the logistics of EMP weekend, it more and more seems that attendance would not be a good use of anyone's money.  The Sunday 9am slot demands an overnight (hotel?) stay and ensures that no one will be at their best; further, I don't see myself creating an expansive presentation for the panel beyond the words on the page.  Best that I just send you copies of the paper (which itself will assuredly be something less than what it should be) and hope that I'm invited to speak at something down San Francisco way one of these days.

Thanks for understanding.

so you're saying you'd rather we weren't in the audience making funny faces at you?

Thanks for letting us off the hook  :)   I was looking at the calendar and realizing that weekend wasn't the greatest. But YOU will be great, regardless of who's in attendance. And don't call me Dearie.

I prefer Shirley :P

After a whole lot of work, culminating in an all-nighter tonight, I have finally more or less finished the paper I'm presenting Sunday.  My shuttle's picking me up for the airport at 3am tonight, which leaves painfully little time ... but if any of you are interested in checking it out and perhaps offering me feedback, the paper's available at http://www.choler.com/gazoo/EMP_JPM.doc ... I hope it strikes some kind of balance between educational, entertaining, and advocational.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words throughout this process of me stressing out.  Here's hoping for good things this weekend.

I finally got a chance to read the whole thing -- kudos, man. Fine work.

Are you familiar with a Joan Baez song called "The Altar Boy and the Thief"?

http://www.joanbaez.com/Lyrics/altarboy.html

I used to play it back-to-back with Rod's "Killing of Georgie".

I had never heard of it until now, and was intrigued to find that she makes an apparent reference to the gay boxer, Emile Griffith, who was just profiled at ESPN.com last week.

I'm happy to report that the visit, the conference, and my presentation all went well.  Currently playing catch-up at my day job but I'll try to fill in some deets later.  Thank you for the words of encouragement in the mean.

I don't think that's a Griffith reference, not in 1976 or '77 which is when the LP came out.  But I'm anxious to see that docu.

Also a long, excellent article about him in last week's Sports Illustrated.  Based on the buzz, this must be an excellent documentary.

Gaz did a very good job in his panel.  He was forced to rush through the last couple of pages at warp speed, but that didn't overshadow the fact that it was a very good presentation.  He had several typical Gaz one-liners & toss-off wordplays & the audience laughed at all the right times.  My favorite was the one about Sonny & Cher actually not engaging in gender-bending, but just being too lazy to change the lyrics.  Also the pointed remark about how the gay community thanked Rod Stewart for recording "The Killing Of Georgie".

You'd all have been proud of him, let's now hope it brings continuing rewards & exposure.
