A good way to end this week.
And Beach Boys as the TOTHC!! Nice!
-
OMG! "Wild Honey" Woo Hoo! BOS1 -- first of many, no doubt.

Which Beach Boy is singing this? I didn't know there was one that couldn't carry a tune.

That's a good one. Seems distinctive to me because the singing isn't...careful. There's some abandon and exhuberance not present in most of their hits.
Semi-jinx on the singing style, Jim

Dave's YM status says "vote if ready but wait for SOOPERHIT 6"--wonder what he's got on deck for us?
So far it's been BOS1, 2 & 3, and we're only three songs in. This Wheel's On Fire, def. a winner.

Who's Linda Gray? I'd thought that was Kate Bush, but I guess it's just a similar picture. BTW, who's your av, Mike? Can't quite read it.

Yippee! You're in there. I feel so popular now.

yay! Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers. A pretty terrible recording (sonically) but "a very important record in its time" as Dave will probably say. Great lyric.

The Beatles (yay) were SHSix, weren't they?
-
curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git!
well, this is Song 6, eh? Well, BOS6 (5 was BT&TV, natch) but Dave made it sound like it was going to be more spectatcular than this
-

I think maybe he originally meant to play BT&TV as SH6, but called an audible and moved it up to #5. It makes more sense that way...
-
I'm so tired... just like the tired starlings! Where's Joel Grey when we need him?
-
BOS7a The Party!!! Peter Sellers' best role ever, at least until Chauncey Gardner.
-
Birdie num-num!!! BOS7 Peter Sellers.
-
So was Bobby Taylor #6 or was it the Beatles?
dave changed his note to say wait for #8.
-
Where's Gaz? "You Gotta Be Loved", BOS8 Still say it sounds like Keith's "98.6"-meets-David Cassidy.

Dave just edited his YM thingy to say "...MAKE IT #8"
-
So was Bobby Taylor #6 or was it the Beatles?
dave changed his note to say wait for #8.
"Ya Gotta Be Loved" -- who is this? Certainly more noteworthy than "I'm So Tired", though not better.
ETA: I see now it's the Montanas.

The Montanas, I think.

who was talking about governments? not bucky fuller, i'm sure.
more cowbell!
-
BOS9 Mr. Masakela. Always a vivid flashback to the steamy, humid NYC Summer of '68. I'm instantly transported every time.
-
BOS Grazing in the Grass. I love those instrumentals.
By the way, tomorrow's my birthday... I wasn't sure if I could get a baton today so I didn't let Dave know!! Ah well.
-
what a way to end - love child! love it.
-
and -- of course! -- BOS10 Miss Ross (she da Boss) and the swingin', socially-relevant Supes! "Love Child" is surely in my all-time Motown Top 10.

f**k jose! are you kidding me?
-
Jose's back -- he's been MIA for some time.
-
Yay, Love Child.
Listening but no privacy to post during the set.
Jose? WTF Dave. Give it up.
Alicat would have put Cream over the top too.
-
Triple jinx on the F$%! Jose.
-
f**k jose!
Dave's still working on that...
-
Has anybody ever said anything to him about Jose? I was tempted to, but didn't want to spoil my first interaction with him on IM.
BTW, Hi, Rich! I voted for Hugh too. But my vote wasn't important enough to mention on the air.
-

Poor Alejandro.....

Hi Dave!! Well I only voted with my thoughts. It probably wasn't even close, but sometimes it's the thought that counts.

I think Alejandro made peace with Dave's proclivities long ago. After all Alejandro was a young cute Latino guy himself once upon a time...
-
Bonus: Blue Cheer! "ain't no cure..."
-

1. Beach Boys - Wild Honey
2. Aretha Franklin - Since You've Been Gone
3. Band - This Wheel's on Fire
4. Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
5. Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers - Does Your Mama Know About Me?
6. Beatles - I'm So Tired
7. Cream - White Room (BEST OF SET!!)
8. Montanas - You Gotta Be Loved
9. Hugh Masekela - Grazin' in the Grass
10. Diana Ross & the Supremes - Love Child
BONUS TRACK: Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues
-
sock it to me, mah honey! The lead vocal on "Wild Honey", as several asked, was by Carl Wilson. This was truly a fab-yoo-luss set.
-
Where's Gaz? "You Gotta Be Loved", BOS8 Still say it sounds like Keith's "98.6"-meets-David Cassidy.
Natch, they've started with 1968 on Replay Saturday, so I missed the Beach Boys (I don't think I've ever heard "Wild Honey"), but I'm here in time for the Band (though I prefer the cover from Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger's Trinity), and, more importantly, the Montanas and Vancouvers tracks.
-
yay! Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers. A pretty terrible recording (sonically)
I can't decide if I agree with this or not. Yes, the vocals get weirdly buried and muffled in the mix, but I don't know that I mind: the same thing happens with the Moments' "Love on a Two-Way Street" and the Presidents' "5-10-15-20-25-30 Years of Love" and it kinda works there.
At any rate, I remain grateful to Dave for introducing me to the track.
-

You've nailed the sonic refs. One of the best examples of the "Sunshine Pop" genre, and Bobby Sherman only wishes he'd had material this good to work with.
PS: Ever heard the other near-hit for Keith, "Ain't Gonna Lie"? Another great melody and horn chart, and it inspired my favorite Sonny & Cher song, "Living for You."

Indeed, I'm amazed that, since the Montanas version never made the Top 40, some smart A&R guy didn't recommend it to Sherman or the Partridges.
Don't think I've heard that Keith tune; I think I heard his follow-up to "98.6", "Tell Me To My Face", a Hollies cover, once or twice.

I think the vocals are far more "buried and muffled" here than in the Moments or Presidents songs; I guess I do mind because it's a far more poignant and socially relevant lyric... in fact I wonder if they were deliberately trying to obscure it (or, conversely, trying to make people concentrate on the words).

Normally when I read message boards, I feel old. But reading these boards, I actually feel pretty young since 1968 was the year I was born and it's obvious most of you were past (at least) young childhood.

That means you're as old as my wife, so you definitely are old!
