Title: 16 Aug 2006--it's 1975
Post by: urth on August 16, 2006, 09:59:55 AM
Starting with Grand Funk's contribution to great pop, Bad Time.

TANC: Last Saturday I had to drive over to the E. Bay, and so grabbed a 1975 set from about three years ago to listen to on the drive. The TOTHC was this very song.

Btw, Dave sez we're playing Spot the Vinyl today. But I don't think this is it.

More specifically, it's a description of the size of a black man's penis, from an old Lenny Bruce routine.

Not sure about the Mazda, but I seem to recall that the Monza required the engine to be removed to change the spark plugs.

And I'll give 20 frink points to whoever gets this one: who was Mort Moriarty?

Actually Gaz originated it, or at least brought it out with him from college.  It's like jazz, if you have to ask, you'll never know.  Which is to say that it's exactly what you think it is, a made-up name for a bonus point that you can give away freely since it has no intrinsic value.  Kind of like the No-Prize if you were ever an avid reader of Marvel Comics.

This and the Grand Funk tune were the only repeats from the set I mentioned having listened to over the weekend, but I think I gotta give the other one a bit of an edge, although I did like the Zep and Tubes tunes a whole bunch. Here it is, in case you were curious:

Grand Funk   Bad Time
Ambrosia   Holdin' On to Yesterday
Electric Light Orchestra   Fire On High
10cc   I'm Not in Love
David Bowie   Fame
Gloria Gaynor   (If You Want it) Do it Yourself
Paul McCartney   Listen to What the Man Said
Queen   Good Company
America   Sister Golden Hair
Todd Rundgren   Real Man

Original airdate, May 21, 2002.

Mark, you've explained this far better than I could, and I love that you remember my college days as well as I do.   :D   When you've got a circle of friends known across the entire college campus as "The Freaks," running gags like "frink points" are bound to happen.  Someday I'll tell you all the tale of us emptying out a basement frat party by launching into a medley of They Might Be Giants choruses.  Or the time on a walking bridge we held a public trial and execution of a pumpkin for crimes against the government. Or why we were responsible for the sign in the dining hall declaring ominously, "NO COOKIES IN TOASTER!!!!!"

okay then, with Gaz's blessing, here's a stab at a Glossary definition:

Frink Points:  Imaginary points with no intrinsic value, which anyone can award for a feat of pop culture wizardry.  Usually listed as the prize for the first person who can answer a spur-of-the-moment trivia question.

PS: This '75 set is archive-worthy.  No amazing breakouts or surprises, but a solid set.  I'm giving BOS to S&G even though "My Little Town" is surely a Katrina by now.  (SFGuy - this is proof that a song can be both!  :)  )  That song never loses relevance for me.  The Leon Russell was also quite pretty on the replay.

We're due for 1994 soon and I'm going to be optimistic about that.
