John Denver (has he ever made a 10@10 appearance?)
If he has, it's only been in a HFH cheese medley.
What hits did Elvis release in '73? "Burnin' Love" was '72 IIRC. (And I think that was his last Top 10 hit, but I could be wrong.) I'm not up to speed on his later hits except for "Way Down."
Maybe you could suggest an instrument theme on the order of the "brass" and "cowbell" sets?
-
Cher
Helen Reddy
John Denver (has he ever made a 10@10 appearance?)
good luck with that! those 3 haven't made any non-HFH appearances afaik. (Bob has played "gypsies, tramps" and "half breed" occasionally, tho')

'72 and '73 seem to be getting short shrift this year--this is only the 4th visit to '73, and I believe last week's '72 was the 4th for that year in '06 as well. 70 and 71 are even more notable by their absence--four visits to 71 (including one classic) and only two to 70 so far this year. A travesty, I tellya.
BOS2 TOP, So Very Hard to Go.

not a big year for the King -- "Steamroller Blues" got to #17. Not a big singles year for Neil Diamond, either, tho' the execrable Jonathan Livingston Seagull LP sold well.

The Alaska pipeline clip is particularly timely, since it appears they have't done much to maintain it since 73, resulting in the shutdown of one of the larger sources of oil to the West coast and likely gas prices jumping yet again. Can we sue the oil companies for bad management? You think they'd maintain their equipment....grrrrr.

Screw maintenance. They just pocket the cash. I was happy to fill up yesterday at $3.17. WTF!

BOS Ann Peebles. No wonder Tina covered this -- it's practically a demo for her.
-
BOS2 the fab Four Tops, who were on a roll that year. "Are You Man Enough?" from the sndtk of one of the Shaft sequels.

$3.17? That's outrageous! The 76 at 19th and Judah had it for $2.93 on Sunday. (Which is still outrageous, but a .24 difference is significant.)

This was once an FM staple, on a par with "Stairway to Heaven" or "Color My World". At least in NYC.

Reading this reminds me how "Grey Seal" used to be somewhat common in '73 sets. At some point or another, Dave has played nearly every track from GYBR, with the exception of maybe "Danny Bailey" and "Your Sister Can't Twist." Makes me wonder if there are any albums from which Dave has played every song. Court and Spark, maybe?
PS: Damn, that oil sitch is a bitch. And people wonder why I don't drive. Someday we'll look back at how energy has been handled in America (from the oil/gas debacle to energy manipulation to Con Ed fraud) and be astonished at the level of rampant corruption. Adorn me with a tinfoil hat if you must, but I find energy monopolies to be one of the most dangerous things happening in America today.

"Grey Seal" was also a KFOG playlist Katrina, roughly 10 or 12 years ago -- it was being played with alarming frequency at one point.

I'm guessing the second number is the country chart? And I believe "Fool" was the B-side of "Steamroller".

I didn't look too close; I was mainly looking at the year, wondering when "Promised Land" was a hit:

WOS to the Stealer's Wheel, which has just become snoozy over time for me.
But BOS to TOP, a major, major sledgehammer that hits me today especially given my recent feelings of displacement melancholia. I hope John was right when he sang "Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be."

Wow, I never noticed how much "Are You Man Enough" sounds like the Tavares hits of the period. Same songwriter, I wonder? Paul Revere and the Raiders had one of their last chartings this year with another song that sounds a lot like this, production/arrangement-wise, "Love Music." Then, everything PR&tR did after 1971 was a knockoff of something or other.

Sounded good the second time around, so does Elton.

Not my favorite set. Then again I really don't like 70's music much. I like some of the hard rock from that era but there seems to be way to much groups like Bread and the Carpenters type of music.

Which Dave rarely plays, actually -- he's got maybe one Carpenters song in his musical database. Ditto Bread; he usually plays "Mother Freedom", their only semi-rocker.

Good ear, as always. The early Tops ABC/Dunhill stuff was from the Lambert & Potter stable; they also produced Tavares. Dunno if they wrote AYME specifically, but check this out from AMG:
Dennis Lambert enjoyed a successful run working for the ABC-Dunhill label during the '70s, where he and partner Brian Potter helmed hit records for the Four Tops, Dusty Springfield, and Glen Campbell, among others. Lambert began his career as something of a folkie, forming a poppy folk-rock duo with fellow singer/guitarist Craig Nuttycombe in Los Angeles in 1968. The first Lambert & Nuttycombe album, At Home, was released on A&M in 1970, and actually was recorded in the duo's Sausalito, CA, living room. In the meantime, Lambert had formed a songwriting partnership with Brian Potter, with whom he signed a publishing deal with ABC-Dunhill in 1969. Lambert cut a solo album, Bags and Things, in 1972, and returned for a second and final Lambert & Nuttycombe album, As You Will, in 1973.
However, Lambert's songwriting and production work at ABC-Dunhill was beginning to make clear that his real fortune lay behind the scenes. He and Potter had their first taste of success writing for the Grass Roots in 1969, and struck gold penning Coven's antiwar protest hit "One Tin Soldier" that year. A few more hits followed, including Gayle McCormick's "It's a Cryin' Shame" and Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds' "Don't Pull Your Love (Out)." 1972, however, was their true breakout year, thanks to their work on the Four Tops' post-Motown LP Keeper of the Castle; the group went on to score hits with the Lambert/Potter-penned title track and "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)," which revived their career. In the wake of that success, Lambert and Potter were teamed with new ABC-Dunhill signee Dusty Springfield for 1973's Cameo LP, and the following year they helped bring R&B group Tavares their first significant chart success. Lambert and Potter's biggest smash as producers came in 1975 with Glen Campbell's Rhinestone Cowboy LP, for which they also wrote four songs. By this point, Lambert and Potter had formed their own label, Haven, which was the mid-'70s home of the Righteous Brothers. Haven's greatest commercial success came in 1978 with one-hit wonder Player's "Baby Come Back," produced but not written by Lambert and Potter. Lambert's songwriting and production activity tailed off substantially in the '80s, but he occasionally resurfaced to work with the likes of Natalie Cole and the Commodores

Tres interressant! But Player wasn't a one-hit wonder! ("This Time I'm in It for Love," the follow-up that I've never heard, made #10.) I only knew a fraction of Lambert-Potter's reach.
PS: I've never seen anyone subtitle "Don't Pull Your Love (Out)." Makes it seem like a plea against coitus interruptus. Or the rhythm method.

The "other" Player song is a sprightly little pop ditty. BTW, "Love Music" (we sure can use it, to turn the people on) was also recorded by the Four Tops.

I need a '70s Four Tops comp. My "Ultimate Collection" only covers their Motown recordings.

JJ on KPOO has played it occasionally, and I don't think it actually charted as a single -- I'll check tonight for sure. The Tops non-hits from '74 onward include some great stuff, another fave of mine being "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)" one for the peaked-at-#41 list. GREAT record, later covered by Santana.

I have always wondered the same thing, so I spent a few minutes checking. Only going by what's in my archive, Court and Spark seems like the winner, with Dave having played 9 of 11 tracks, and Rumours, with 8 of 11, seems to be the runnner up. I initially thought Steely Dan was the best overall candidate, and on further review I was right. Dave has played 35 of the 63 total tracks on their eligible albums, including 7 of 9 tracks from The Royal Scam, 5 of 7 tracks from Gaucho, and 6 of 10 tracks from both Can't Buy A Thrill and Katy Lied. There are several other albums with 6 of 10, such as Supertramp's Breakfast In America. Few other album's have had more than 60% of the songs played by Dave, although it will surprise no one that one such is Zenyatta Mondatta, and another is the Cars debut album.

tell me the C&S and Rumours tracks that are NOT in your db and I'll tell you if I can ever recall Dave playing 'em in the past 14 years.

"Just Like This Train" & "Trouble Child" from Court and Spark; "Songbird", "Oh Daddy" & "Gold Dust Woman" from Rumours. I'll be shocked to pieces if you don't say that you've heard "Gold Dust Woman before.

Indeed. I'm sure Dave's played GDW. And I'm sure "Trouble Child" has made an appearance, tho' it's been ages... the other 3 I can honestly say I've never heard on 10@10.
But Rumours made me think of Fleetwood Mac, and that's another 8-for-11 as far as my memory goes: only "Blue Letter", "Sugar Daddy" and "I'm so Afraid" have never been spun by Dave (tho' BL has appeared via Bob and either Rob or Ginger too).

I don't doubt the accuracy of your memory, however "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", & "Silver Springs" are the only tunes from Fleetwood Mac that are in the archive. Dave just hasn't been hitting that album much, those three songs combine for a total of 6 entries, whereas the 8 songs from Rumours combine for 23(!).

Well, the Tops version of LM never charted, either Pop or R&B; kind of amazing if it was never a single, since it got more airplay than some of their actual 45s. But this is weird: in '77 someone or something called The Regal Dewy charted R&B with a song called "Love Music"; no idea if it was perhaps a disco version of the same tune.
I've never heard the Raiders version, BTW.

I can confirm "Trouble Child": I specifically remember Dave playing it and "Twisted" as a two-fer.
Very interesting results! Thanks for checking that.
As for PR&tR's "Love Music," I only own it on cassette -- but it's for sale on iTunes if you wanna drop a buck. (It would be so easy for me to treat iTunes as a bar jukebox and the songs as disposables. That's why I won't let myself.)

PS: Your database indicates only 5 tracks played from GYBR: Saturday Night's Alright, the title track, All the Girls Love Alice, Harmony, and I've Seen That Movie Too. Quelle suprise!

Silver Spring isn't on that record, so that's even less. Seems odd
1.Monday Morning
2.Warm Ways
3.Blue Letter
4.Rhiannon
5.Over My Head
6.Crystal
7.Say You Love Me
8.Landslide
9.World Turning
10.Sugar Daddy
11.I'm So Afraid

I used to be an English major, but in two weeks, my first gig as a certified teacher starts in chemistry and physics!

Oh, well that's okay then, countable and noncountable nouns don't matter in physics & chemistry. ( teasing  )
Seriously though, I really didn't know that you were teaching those subjects. If you ever feel like getting some outside feedback/advice/curriculum help let me know, I have a good friend who teaches those subjects at Berkely High, for about 7 years now. His wife is my son's godmother.

well, English does matter, but I'll leave that for another discussion. I need all the help I can get, primarily because I'll be teaching 5 classes in 4 different rooms. I need lesson plans and labs/demos that lend themselves to 'homeless' teachers who have to wheel a cart from room to room.
