any guesses? We 69-ed on Mon, I seriously doubt we'll go way-back twice in one week. A theme set? Maybe a warm-weather thing, since Dave missed out on a Summer Set.
ETA: another Latino guy gets a Birthday request -- jeez, what a shocker.
how many friggin' demands does this Roberto HAVE, anyway?
-

It's 1978.

Hope you're just kidding--we were just in 78 (classic, but still...) less than 3 weeks ago. I was hoping for 72 or 73 myself.
-

RRRRRRRRRRRoberto is so demanding!

Oh, this explains a lot. Of course, it's a request for some guy named R-r-r-r-oberto!
Demanding little prick, isn't he?
-
RRRRRRRRRRRoberto is so demanding!
I'm looking forward to the WKRP full-length version.
-
RRRRRRRRRRRoberto is so demanding!
Demanding RRRROberto JINX!!!
-
RRRRRRRRRRRoberto is so demanding!
RRRRRRRRRoberto can kiss my big hairy ass. This "anything for a guy with a Latin name" schtick of Dave's is WAY tired.
-
next time i request a birthday set, i'm saying my name as "amalia."

Maybe if I make a birthday request this year I'll tell him my name is Jaime. That'll do it!!
-
i don't like dreadlock. i hate it.
-
Yikes, fake reggae alert!
-
i don't like dreadlock. i hate it.
If he plays "Thunder Island" too I'm bailing.

Next time I send an email to Dave with a request, I'm signing as Rodrigo!

With all the rest of the stuff RRRRRRoberto asked for, I doubt it'll fit in the 45 minute timeslot.

i don't like dreadlock. i hate it.
crankypants!
BOS, because I can!
-
I like "Dreadlock Holiday". So there.
-
"don't you Wahoo my words"?
I haven't looked it up, but I thought it was "Don't you walk through my world"
-
OK, nice segue: WKRP into Radio, Radio.

Miguelito es bueno, si!

It's just David, pronounced dah-VEED.
-
Me llamo Jose. Giving HM to what would be one of the two or three best SNL music moments ever.
-
I like "Dreadlock Holiday". So there.
jodete, davido! or davide?
-
Radio Radio!
Your spanish name should be El Jefe, 'the chief'.

Spanish for David is....David. (accent on the other syllable though)
-
BOS2 Bonnie Tyler! This redeems the set for me.
-
BOS to the inimitable Ms. Tyler, "It's a Heartache." Close enough to the "Nothin' But a Heartache" I'd desired an hour ago.
-
Me llamo Jose. Giving HM to what would be one of the two or three best SNL music moments ever.
yes, that immediately comes to mind. It was shocking the first time!
-

i would bos her, but that i saw her recently (in recent form) on dutch telly. yipes and yikes!

This is great. Giving me chills...
-
btw, y'all got to check out the thing I posted about Bush over on the Rant & Vent thread. Total cringe. Un-F*CKing-believable that this guy represents MY government.

OK

"We Are the Champions" sounds *completely* different to me without "We Will Rock You"'s lead-in.
-
i suppose it's all about how you sneak in "we are the champions." normally it sounds overplayed. but it sounded great right after miss tyler.

I've definitely heard this too much.

yes! maybe that's the ticket, gub!

Probably the best use of Brian May's tone in any Queen song...
-
Johnny Strikes Up the Band
Loved this live.
-
BOS3 Zevon, strikin' it up.
-

Nifty segue from Queen into Zevon: "Freddy gettin' ready, rock steady..."
-
VHM to Mr. Zevon. Dave has several songs he plays off this record, but I'd love to hear Tenderness on the Block just once.
-

hmmm.......i could think of several others, including "mustapha." there is also an early works cassette i used to own that had great tone, but, unfortunately, i don't own it anymore, and i can't think of any of the songs on it, at the momtn.
-
it's al jarreau! i mean, michael jackson! what's the bos email again?
-
OMGWTF! BOS4 Jacksons, "Blame it on the Boogie"!!
"we spent the night in 'Frisco
Macauley brought the Crisco..."
-
VHM to Mr. Zevon. Dave has several songs he plays off this record, but I'd love to hear Tenderness on the Block just once.
Just look at the track list for Excitable Boy:
Johnny Strikes Up The Band
Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner
Excitable Boy
Werewolves Of London
Accidentally Like A Martyr
Nighttime In The Switching Yard
Veracruz
Tenderness On The Block
Lawyers, Guns And Money
What a solid effort, eh?

I was gonna say that nowadays it's hard to hear MJ signing about a 'dirty feeling' moving him.
-
WOS to Cars for killing the momentum.
And is it just my cheap speakers, or does KFOG overdo the bass absurdly in its web simulcast?

Well, it's 1978, Dave could play "Shakedown Street!"

It's your age. Your high end is diminishing. Happens to us all...

Exactly--and we've heard at least five of those in various sets over the years: Johnny, Roland, Excitable Boy, Werewolves, and Lawyers. And maybe Nighttime in the Switching Yard too--can't recall. All of those got FM airplay when this came out.
I remember seeing Zevon play as the second band (Les Dudek opened, if anyone remembers him) at one of those Mountain Aire festivals up in the sierras that summer--great band--Warren on keys, Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Stanley Sheldon (see Frampton Comes Too Fast) on bass, can't recall who the drummer was. All of them looked incredibly hung over--they went on around noon and it was about 90 degrees out. I can still smell the essence of Hawaiian Tropic in the air from that day...
-
Your high end is diminishing.
My end is perky!
And BBBOS to Player's "Baby Come Back," which I've listened to about 20 times this week (not because of the dumping, this preceded it).
-
WOS to Cars for killing the momentum.

wos to the cars, agreed. tanc: my cousin just told me someone brought the original player album to work yesterday. vinyl, baby.
-
Dang cow orker! Missed everything after Radio Radio up until Player came on.
-
Hey Gaz, how does "Baby Come Back" fit your mood?

-
VHM Player, Best. H&O. Imitiation. EVAH!
-
Hey Gaz, how does "Baby Come Back" fit your mood?

I'm in more of a "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" mood.
-
The KFrOG webcast sound totally sucks. I can't believe they're still doing 32K. I get 192K on RadioParadise which sounds fantastic. KFrOG sounds like everybody is in a cave playing through a phaser.

buy your first good wine
you'll have a real good time
Or a few margaritas at the Duplex.

BOS2 to Walter Egan, Magnet and Steel. Just noticed the toy piano behind the chorus in this song--beautiful!
-
Only thing I don't like about "Magnet & Steel" is that the (wood blocks? xylophone?) on the refrain are laid on rather thick, hurts my ears a bit after a while.
-
Magnet and Steel

ah! me, too!

Ditto, and also another 'Alison' as the LP was ttiled Not Shy.

Seconded. Was he in some other band? Seems like he just appeared out of nowhere.
-

Haha whoops!
-
"and that's all he wanted from us, was that stuff".
Funny, most of us have asked for less and gotten zilch.
-
Shoot! I missed Ronny Montrose. BSIM.
Pretty fine 78 set, IMO.

Did Jackson Browne play that day too? If so, I was there too. I think Les was in the Dudek, Finnegan & Krueger Band. For anyone who saw Boz Scaggs live when Les was in his band, he is hard to forget. Also don't forget what brought him to fame: played on Ramblin' Man w/Dickey Betts (unless I have it mixed up with another track!)

Seconded. Was he in some other band? Seems like he just appeared out of nowhere.
He backed-up/co-wrote with Emmylou, Jackson Browne, Gram Parsons, and other once hit the LA scene, but maybe you're conflating him with Joe Egan, the other half of Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty.

Ya know, I think you're right. Stealer's Wheel did come to mind. I also think of John Stewart's "Gold" in the same mold and timeframe as "Magnet and Steel" (both metal songs?), and we know he had a long history before his pop hit.

I actually first heard of him from his solo work that got played a bit on KSHE in St. Louis, such as "Old Judge Jones". Didn't know he was half so well-connected as this until just now. This is exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about in our discussion of Nick Drake last hour.

Reason I know all that is that up until about a year ago I had convinced myself that Walter Egan was in Stealers Wheel, but when I got a Stealers Wheel hits disc & read the liner notes I began to suspect I'd been wrong all these years. Subsequent research on AMG confirmed it & re-educated me.

So are people headed elsewhere for Friday afternoon listening? It's been so long since I had a day to tune in and hang out with y'all, I don't know what's happening. CGSS?

I recommend the KRSH Soul Patrol from Noon to One, that's where I'm headed. A lot fewer commercials in the hour than CGSS.

Do they play an entire hour of soul? I thought it was just 3 songs, but if it's an hour I'll check it out.
CGSS until then, tho'.

Yep, exactly. JB headlined, Jimmy Buffet was second (with a broken leg), and I can't recall if anyone was between him and Zevon or not. I was living in Sutter Creek at the time so it was almost in my back yard--only about 20 miles away.
Mike Finnegan went on to play with a lot of other folks--Dave Mason, and for some reason Stephen Stills is coming to mind too.
-
Bonus: T.Heads, "Artists Only".
-
"We Are the Champions" sounds *completely* different to me without "We Will Rock You"'s lead-in.
I usually would listen to the 10PM version of 10 at 10 but I forgot to tune it tonight because, coming home from the Giants game, I was listening to details and stuff about the trade. It did look strange to read the set list and not see We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions - Queen as one song.
