On the morning show, without missing a beat, when Peter announced that Lay died of a heart attack, Dave immediately changed the subject to something like "what did you do this weekend? I stained my deck." It felt like Dave didn't want to give Lay much airtime.

I suspect it was more like, "don't get me started" -- Dave probably didn't want to go off on a rant. He really tries to rein himself, when it comes to speechifying. He'd rather do his pointed segues.
