Title: 20 June 2006: 1986
Post by: RGMike on June 20, 2006, 10:04:28 AM
Guilty Displeasure: "I wanna Be a Cowboy".  Not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. "His name is Ted" -- that's supposed to be hilarious?

Boys Don't Cry is both the name of the group & my admonition to you guys.

"Ted, Oh Ted!"  (that part is what's supposed to be hilarious)

VHM Fixx "Secret Separation".

Sorry, but I think it got a pass from a lot of people who saw it as a Reagan/Cowboy political thing.  Which it ain't. It doesn't have a thought in its head.  (of course, neither did Reagan.)

Oh it is pure cheese of the most vapid kind, no mistake.  Which is why you can't take it so seriously.  But it is a pure example of the Zeitgeist.  In my book '86 was like that from start to finish.

Sorry, but Stevie is leaving Boys Don't Cry in her dust in today's WOS competition.

Somehow, not being able to vote BOS via YM or email today is going to matter much, I think.

IIRC, last time Ginger played this she said that Prince is on the keyboards uncredited on this.  She said something like, "he just walked in, knocked out the keyboard part and left again".

ETA: and another nice segue from Reagan saying, "I will do whatever it takes to make it right again" into Stevie singing, "I Can't Wait".

Ditto on the unfotunate "I Can't Wait", though the segue after Ronnie saying he was going to set everything right was priceless.

This is almost turning into a Hits From Hell session, which, I'll repeat, is pretty much how I remember this year.

Now all we need is some Starship.

It's not something I've heard here much (at all?) but it's still not doing it for me. But then, 86 is probably one of my two least-fave years on the entire wheel. (And 85 is the other.)

On the other hand, how often do we get to hear Tina Turner in two consecutive sets (Ginger's being the other for those who tuned in late), 15 years apart?

Dave almost never plays Tina in the '80s... but he plays this. Go figure.

The latter is what we heard on 'BCO not an hour ago. Nice...and rough.

This would actually be my BOS to this point, damning with faint praise, but it's surprisingly not a Katrina.  Dave has only played this twice in the preceeding 14 months & not at all in the 11 months before that.

Precisely.  To further the point, care to guess how many times Dave has played "Sledgehammer" in the past 26 months?

yes it was.  I decided by about tune #4 that I have to look at this as a HFH set, and enjoy thinking about how good all the other music out htere is in comparison to this schlock.

Yikes! the Goat wins BOS.  Way to go Fogheads!

A very subdued back-announce as well.  I think Dave knows that this is a sucky year.  At least we had a couple of nice segues.

And The Goat gets the popular BOS vote? That just proves your point, I think.

(And yes, that was the Call. No love lost here.)

I think he knows it was a sucky set. But there are a number of decent tunes (particularly on the pop side) that he doesn't bother with, that would've at least livened things up:

Daryl Hall, "Dreamtime"
OMD, "Forever Live & Die"
Simply Red "Money$ Too Tight"
Prince, "Kiss", "Mountains"
Janet Jackson, any of her hits from that year
Anita Baker, "Sweet Love"
Baltimora, "Tarzan Boy" (OK, cheezy, but a personal fave)
Madonna, "Live to Tell", "True Blue"
Nu Shooz, "I Can't Wait"

But the Bonus: VH "Why Can't this be Love?". (the Foghead winner eschwed the Smiths, damn him)
