Title: RIP Vince Welnick
Post by: ggould on June 03, 2006, 11:19:47 AM
Vince occupied the fatal keyboard slot in the Grateful Dead for their last 5 years.  All other keyboardists (except for Bruce Hornsby) have died.  He was a sweet soul, and I interviewed him in 2000:

It's not confirmed yet, but papers say it looks like suicide.

RIP Vince. If there's a heaven we all end up in, it's sure to be filled with wonderful music.

Crap. Just checked in while I'm still conscious and saw this for the first time. A terrible thing. Vince was a godsend to the Dead when they needed him most. Hope he finds some peace.

(Btw, what about Tom Constanten? He was only in the Dead for a short while, but wasn't he considered a member of the band?)

He most definitely should have been, and he most definitely is alive.  (He opened for the Jefferson Starship at B.B. King's last August; his setlist included "Mountains of the Moon" and "Yo-Ho-Ho and a Bottle of Rum."  Engaging, joy-seeking man.)

you get extra credit points!  TC is in that netherworld as to whether he was in the band long enough, but  nonetheless, he escaped!
