A song by Blues Traveler I've never heard to kick off.
-
I thought there was no stream on Thursdays. ?

That's The Drive -- they sometimes do other stuff on Thurs.
But ditto, Mark: I've never heard this song either. Sure beats "But Anyway"...
-
wow, Everything But the Girl! BOS and I don't think they have ever been played on KFOG.

Well, in her preamble Ginger talked about Blues Traveler bursting on the scene, but for me they sort of snuck up from behind more than bursting.
I still dig "But Anyway", especially the live version I got.
VHM Mutant Ninja Turtles.
-
"Thursday night and Friday will be on Tuesday night instead." That would confuse the beejeezus outta me...
But VHM World Party anyway.
-

You are correct sir!
(at least as far as my Db goes)

Tuned in late, to what sounds like the Samples, a band I like more in theory and sentimentalism than in actual musical appreciation.

It is, and I never seem to have heard them back in the day, so this is sounding quite nice to me.
-
It's all new to me!
-
And here's Eric Johnsontriani.

TANC! Ginger just said she'd be back after the break with Peter Gabriel & Youssou N'Dour...
...and I had just bothered to check back to find that this is the 4th 1990 set this year from Ginger & I was all set to comment that so far she had not repeated anything...
...but now we get "Shaking the Tree", which we actually heard in the first set of the year on Jan 5.
Still it is A) a great song, and B) a lot less repetition than we get from Dave.
ETA: Dave does go to 1990 far less frequently, but even so there are 4 songs that are duped in his last 4 sets & one that is triplicated. And we haven't been since March 7, so we are probably overdue, maybe even as soon as today.
-
BOS: Cop Rock!
(I really hate acknowledging the early '90s as being 15 years old, though.)
-
VHM "Cop Rock" which was not nearly as bad as it was made out to be.
-
I'm hearing Robert Cray. Still 10@10? Ironic. this morning Benson the PD had new Keb Mo on and I felt like I was hearing Robert Cray-like matrial.

Oops, I forgot to check the sets this month that I haven't added yet, and I totally forgot that we went there last Wednesday. Guess it wasn't a memorable set...
...or maybe it was just my failing memory. That was actually a pretty good set, with Woman In Chains & Snap. And by changing the mix to include it & exclude the set from last Sept the balance improves quite a bit, the triplicated song being only a dupe and two other dupes going away.

I'm glad I'm not alone in my assessment of Mr Bochco's underrated show.
OMG! The Lightning Seeds! "Pure". BOS2.
-
BBBOS, and a sledgehammer of the period for me: Lightning Seeds, "Pure." Twee, but loverly so.

1. Tears for Fears - Woman in Chains (BEST OF SET!!)
2. John Farnham - You're the Voice
3. MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This
4. Michael Penn - No Myth
5. INXS - Suicide Blonde
6. Jude Cole - Baby It's Tonight
7. Toy Matinee - Things She Said
8. Aerosmith - Janie's Got a Gun
9. Snap - The Power
10. They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse in Your Soul

see my ETA above.

Guilty displeasure: The Indigos' "Hammer and a Nail," while undeniably well-intentioned, seems more and more a ham-fisted lyric with time.
-
VHM the Carpenter Dykes, er, the Indigo Girls, "Hammer & a Nail"
-
This guy is not actually singing, "Stone cold sober, looking for bottles of love," is he? *shudder*

Yup -- it's Morey faves DelAmitri, tho' I don't think I've heard this one before.

He's played a handful of their tunes, but not this one.

belated BOS Goodfellas. Ray Liotta got robbed -- no Oscar nom for him.
-
Joe "I'm funny how?" Pesci for Best Supporting Actor.
-
belated BOS Goodfellas. Ray Liotta got robbed -- no Oscar nom for him.
He deserved a nom for Something Wild, too (imho)

mos' def'!
trivia: who DID win Best Actor that year (1990)?
-
belated BOS Goodfellas. Ray Liotta got robbed -- no Oscar nom for him.
Undoubtedly the Oscars that I disaggreed with the most often & most vehemently.
Date: 25 March 1991
Host: Billy Crystal
Location: Shrine Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
Best Picture
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Jim Wilson (I); Kevin Costner
Awakenings (1990) - Walter F. Parkes; Lawrence Lasker
Ghost (1990) - Lisa Weinstein
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Francis Ford Coppola
Goodfellas (1990) - Irwin Winkler
Awakenings & Ghost are two of the worst Best Pic noms ever! Reversal of Fortune, Grifters, and even Misery would have been better. Dances is arguably the kind of movie AMPAS likes to see win, and it seems to have held up prety well, but Goodfellas was, is & always will be a superior film.
Best Actor in a Leading Role
Reversal of Fortune (1990) - Jeremy Irons
Awakenings (1990) - Robert De Niro
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) - Gérard Depardieu
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Kevin Costner
Field, The (1990) - Richard Harris
No argument here, but neither De Niro's nor Depardieu's noms hold up well. I loved it when Jermey Irons thanked David Cronenberg in his acceptance speech.
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Misery (1990) - Kathy Bates (I)
Grifters, The (1990) - Anjelica Huston
Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1990) - Joanne Woodward
Postcards from the Edge (1990) - Meryl Streep
Pretty Woman (1990) - Julia Roberts
No argument here, tho' if you gave me a minute I could probably think of 3 actresses who better deserved the nom that Julia Roberts got.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Goodfellas (1990) - Joe Pesci
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Graham Greene (II)
Dick Tracy (1990) - Al Pacino
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Andy Garcia (I)
Longtime Companion (1990) - Bruce Davison
No argument here, tho' it'd have been nice to see Bruce Davison win.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Ghost (1990) - Whoopi Goldberg
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Mary McDonnell
Goodfellas (1990) - Lorraine Bracco
Grifters, The (1990) - Annette Bening
Wild at Heart (1990) - Diane Ladd
Annette Bening acted circles aroung Whoopi, and was painfully robbed. Every other nominee had better craft & was more deserving. Jennifer Jason Leigh (Miami Blues) is at least one actress who deserved the nom that Whoopi got (although Whoopi was herself robbed for Color Purple).
Best Director
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Kevin Costner
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Francis Ford Coppola
Goodfellas (1990) - Martin Scorsese
Grifters, The (1990) - Stephen Frears
Reversal of Fortune (1990) - Barbet Schroeder
No way Scorsese doesn't win this if they ever did a review from the booth.
Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen
Ghost (1990) - Bruce Joel Rubin
Alice (1990) - Woody Allen
Avalon (1990) - Barry Levinson (I)
Green Card (1990) - Peter Weir
Metropolitan (1990) - Whit Stillman
YIKES! One of the most embarassing moments in Oscar history. The nom for Green Card was pretty egregious too. Whit Stillman should have won, if only anybody had actually seen his film.
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Michael Blake
Awakenings (1990) - Steven Zaillian
Goodfellas (1990) - Nicholas Pileggi; Martin Scorsese
Grifters, The (1990) - Donald E. Westlake
Reversal of Fortune (1990) - Nicholas Kazan
No argument here, and great trivia to go with it. This was the acceptance speech where Exene Cervenka got a big thank you. Blake essentially wrote this story as am anniversary present to her & Viggo Mortenson.
Best Cinematography
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Dean Semler
Avalon (1990) - Allen Daviau
Dick Tracy (1990) - Vittorio Storaro
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Gordon Willis
Henry & June (1990) - Philippe Rousselot
No argument here.
Best Art Direction-Set Decoration
Dick Tracy (1990) - Richard Sylbert; Rick Simpson
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) - Ezio Frigerio; Jacques Rouxel
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Jeffrey Beecroft; Lisa Dean
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Dean Tavoularis; Gary Fettis
Hamlet (1990/I) - Dante Ferretti; Francesca Lo Schiavo
No argument here, a well deserved win.
Best Costume Design
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) - Franca Squarciapino
Avalon (1990) - Gloria Gresham
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Elsa Zamparelli
Dick Tracy (1990) - Milena Canonero
Hamlet (1990/I) - Maurizio Millenotti
Should have been Dick Tracy.
Best Sound
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Russell Williams II; Jeffrey Perkins; Bill W. Benton; Gregory H. Watkins
Days of Thunder (1990) - Charles M. Wilborn; Donald O. Mitchell; Rick Kline; Kevin O'Connell
Dick Tracy (1990) - Thomas Causey; Chris Jenkins; David E. Campbell; Doug Hemphill
Hunt for Red October, The (1990) - Richard Bryce Goodman; Richard Overton; Kevin F. Cleary; Don J. Bassman
Total Recall (1990) - Nelson Stoll; Michael J. Kohut; Carlos DeLarios; Aaron Rochin
Either Days of Thunder or Hunt for Red October would have been more deserving.
Best Film Editing
Dances with Wolves (1990) - Neil Travis
Ghost (1990) - Walter Murch
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Barry Malkin; Lisa Fruchtman; Walter Murch
Goodfellas (1990) - Thelma Schoonmaker
Hunt for Red October, The (1990) - Dennis Virkler; John Wright
Should have been Goodfellas.
Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing
Hunt for Red October, The (1990) - Cecelia Hall; George Watters II
Flatliners (1990) - Charles L. Campbell; Richard C. Franklin
Total Recall (1990) - Stephen Hunter Flick
No argument here.
Best Makeup
Dick Tracy (1990) - John Caglione Jr.; Doug Drexler
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) - Michèle Burke; Jean-Pierre Eychenne
Edward Scissorhands (1990) - Ve Neill; Stan Winston
I'll never forget Siskel & Ebert's 'If We Gave Out the Oscars' show this year. Siskel was all over Ghost for generally sucking in their 'Worst Nomination' segment, but Ebert said his Worst Nom was this one for Cyrano: "How in the world can you give a nomination to someone for giving a really ugly big nose...to an actor who has already got one!?"
Best Music, Original Song
Dick Tracy (1990) - Stephen Sondheim
- For the song "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)".
Godfather: Part III, The (1990) - Carmine Coppola (music); John Bettis (lyrics)
- For the song "Promise Me You'll Remember".
Home Alone (1990) - John Williams (I) (music); Leslie Bricusse (lyrics)
- For the song "Somewhere in My Memory".
Postcards from the Edge (1990) - Shel Silverstein
- For the song "I'm Checkin' Out".
Young Guns II (1990) - Jon Bon Jovi
- For the song "Blaze of Glory".
No argument here, a well deserved win.
Best Music, Original Score
Dances with Wolves (1990) - John Barry
Avalon (1990) - Randy Newman
Ghost (1990) - Maurice Jarre
Havana (1990/I) - Dave Grusin
Home Alone (1990) - John Williams
No argument here, but if Whoopi deserved a 'make-good' Oscar, Randy Newman certainly did by now (although he'd have to see about 8 more noms go by before he finally took a statuette home).
Best Foreign Language Film
Reise der Hoffnung (1990)- Switzerland
Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)- France
Ju Dou (1990)- China
Porte aperte (1990)- Italy
Schreckliche Mädchen, Das (1990)- Germany
Big argument here. Ju Dou deserved this, a fantastic film, by a fantastic director (Zhang Yimou), but apparently beyond the Academy's comprehension.
-
to the above I'd would add: I thought Pacino should've been nommed for Best Actor for G3 and not Supp for DT. He'd've given Irons stiff competition and mighta won, given his many previous snubs. He's certainly better in G3 than Scent of an Oscar...

agreed. And if only Winona Ryder hadn't pulled out (or at least if Francis hadn't recast the role with his daughter Sofia), G3 might've won Best Picture. But I never heard of anyone who could suspend their disbelief at Andy Garcia's Vincent being compelled to have an incestuous affair with Sofia Coppola's Mary. With a 19-yr-old Winona (fresh off of Edward Scissorhands) that might have been possible. And when Mary dies, presumably the audience wouldn't have been happy.
