Dave's not here, man -- Tim Goodman of all people is subbing for him. So a "classic" is on tap.
and given the Goodman connection, maybe they'll replay one of Dave's "TV sets"?

That would be killer.
I finally saw the new season premiere of South Park. Wow.

They were running a promo about that yesterday afternoon, but I was too bummed to post about it.

Indeed. They outdid themselves, and made it clear they don't hate Hayes, just that "fruity little club" he now belongs to. LOL! Genius.
But will "Darth Chef" be a recurring character?
-
i'll miss the set today, too. off to brunch before whiskey! see you at 5:30, mike.
-

I kinda hope not.
-
it's gonna be 1971, so that's not too bad.

I was kinda hoping they'd let Goodman "guest host" 10@10 too.
-

-
I'm happy with '71

Marvin to start.

2 BOS's in a row: Bread's "Muthaf---in Freedom" and Chase, "Get it ON, Muthaf---er!"
OK, I'll stop.

I'll give a BoGIO (Best of Get It On) to Chase. Horny horns!

Niteliters (or Nightlighters), "K-Gee", BOS3!
-
What is this current instrumental?
-
JCS - the overture, can it be the whole medley?
ETA: YES!!

DIE if you want to... you innocent PUPPET!!!

And it's not even Easter!
Yeah, Easter comes about as late as it possibly can this year, 4/16.
-
I have to admit this sounds pretty good...
But for Rock Operas, nothing still compares to Hair for me. .... I still have memories of my parents taking me and my younger brother and sister to Hair (nudity and all) in S.F., way back when.... :)

Buddha, was he where it's at? Is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain or was that just P.R.?

My folks took us to see the original cast of JCS off-Broadway (I was 7 & we lived in Long Island then), complete with the 39 lashes - which gave me nightmares for months.

Technically, Hair's not an "opera", just a musical. Dave has a Hair medley he plays occasionally too.
LBJ took the IRT down to Main St USA...
-
Another BOS to Tommy James, "Dragging the Line", just one of my favorite songs of this era, very evocative for me.
-
BOMS (Best of Movie Set): Harold and Maude ... no contest ...
-
it wouldn't be '71 without H&M.
"I even find the question distasteful!"
BOS Jerry Reed!
-
(sigh) I know I've said this before- but Harold & Maude is one of my Guilty Displeasures.
Or more accurately- my Guilty "Whatever, dudes".
HM to "When You're Hot Yer Hot"

I finally saw the movie last year and loved it (Ruth Gordon RULES!)... but Dave plays the clips WAY too much.
BOS # whatever Rev Al. Sometimes I fold mah arms and ah say eeeeee!

No argument there!

As one of the ILM pundits opined: From the neck up, he's a pimp, and from the neck down, he's his own bitch! As the story goes, he was living with a prostitute around this time who bore considerable sartorial influence.

Well thank gawd Jeezus rescued him from such a sinful lifestyle!

Stevie Wonder - If You Really Love Me
Tommy James - Draggin' the Line

BONUS TRACK: James Brown - Make it Funky
-
You know, I didn't really discover "What's Goin' On" -- both the single and the album -- until I was a junior in college. Hearing the replay tonight sent me right back to Tuesday afternoons of my buddy Eddie McGeary getting me stoned after class and playing me something from his collection. He had Grace Slick and the Great Society! -- I could have kissed him. And he got me to buy Marvin on cassette instead of dinner one afternoon.
(I have another story about how Eddie and that demon weed nearly caused me to ruin an Amnesty International event, but that's for another day.)
-
Guilty displeasure of set: Stevie's "If You Really Love Me." This is what I remember the early '70s sounding *like*, at least on the chorus, but I hate those sluggish verses. Doesn't flow for me.
-
So, I find myself periodically in my church band having to play songs from JCS, Godspell, etc. Christian musicals are just like Christian music; they generally can't stand on their own artistic merits, and need people to blithely accept them as art, tastebuds left at the door!

Maybe JCS should have been my pitch for this "Guilty Pleasures" convo. I happen to adore it: The songs, the performances, the casting, the message, everything is just intuitively right about it to me. Of course, it helps that I've long identified with Judas as represented there.
