Title: 16 March 2006 -- it's 1991
Post by: RGMike on March 16, 2006, 09:49:26 AM
I'm hoping for '73 , which is long overdue -- and as tomorrow's a St Pat's theme, odds are decent.

And unless they've sold a shitload of cmmls for this break, it'll be an early start.

ETA: Yuck, it's 1991.

Just ONE interesting, surprising track, Dave -- that's all I ask.

73 would RAWK but I'm thinking 92 or 93--it's been awhile there too and we've only been to the 90s once this month. Hope I'm wrong.

ETA: and as usual, I'm off by one year (or two). Mike nailed the early start tho--the TOTHC was underway at 9:58. The days of the 9 minute pre-set commercial break are long gone.

Sorry Dave, this song belongs in 1990.  Album & single peaked then.  "She Talks To Angels" straddled into 1991, but not this tune.

Kudos to Dave, hope this means he's inspired to 'break the mold'.

I agree, but Dave believes if an LP was still charting, it's "technically legal" to play a track from it -- I've had that argument with him.

Ha!  Actually he's played the PM Dawn often enuf (too often for my taste) but ANYTHING from that Prince album would be most welcome.

Just as long as we're spared Color Me Badd's "All 4 Love"...

Here's the first and probably not the last, but I have to give Dave at least a little credit for getting through half the set before getting predictable.

"When the going gets tough/I've got a hole in the wall" sounds vaguely obscene.

And STILL this song is boring.

That's the story of/that's the glory (hole) of love.

Yeesh, Extreme. Who... weren't very.  I actually liked this at the time, it's pretty enough. But really, Dave...

i would have preferred their other hit, "hole-hearted." if you're going to play a pretty extreme song, play "when i first kissed you."

here's metallica, as predicted.

I'm thinking KGSR Austin for the rest of the day -- SXSW is going on, and they'll be having lots of surprise in-studio performances going on, should you care.

3/16/06 - Thursday!  Sounds like...1991!!

Black Crowes - Twice as Hard
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Breaking the Girl
Simple Minds - See the Lights
INXS - Shining Star
Dire Straits - Fade to Black (B-O-S!!)
Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting
EMF - Unbelievable
Marc Cohn - 29 Ways
Extreme - More Than Words
Metallica - Enter Sandman
BONUS TRACK:  Crowded House - Chocolate Cake

ETA: See my subsequent post, but 4 of today's tracks are among the top 10 most overplayed '91 tunes.

Well I'm only about halfway done with my project of converting Darryl's info into a spreadsheet, but I had to see if your comment holds up.  With Darryl's website I have access to a continuous list from May '04, and about 60% of the sets from 12/01 to 2/04.

Specific to 1991, incl. today, I now have the last 12 setlists from that year, plus six more from '02 & '03.  We probably hit '91 another 5-7 times in that period, but Darryl is incomplete.  Of these 18 sets 2 are classics, but not duplicates.  There is no PM Dawn in there anywhere.  Today 9/10 tunes were repeats.   Can you guess the only bustout? (answer below)

Once I have this stuff in Excel it's pretty easy to manipulate.  The following tunes show up more than once in 18 sets from 1991, and some of these will surprise you.  For example "Silent Lucidity" only popped up twice, "All This Time" only once & "Shiny Happy People" not at all (and you'll never guess which REM song was the most frequent)

EMF - "Unbelievable", 7
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend", 7
Jesus Jones - "Right Here, Right Now ", 6
REM - "Texarkana", 6
Extreme - "More Than Words", 5
INXS - "Shining Star", 5
Metallica - "Enter Sandman", 5
Primal Scream - "Movin' On Up", 5
REM - "Losing My Religion", 5
Seal - "Crazy", 5
Big Audio Dynamite - "Rush", 4
Crowded House - "It's Only Natural", 4
Rembrandts - "Just the Way it is, Baby!", 4
Simple Minds - "Stand By Love", 4
Bonnie Raitt - "Tangled & Dark", 3
Color Me Badd - "All 4 Love", 3
Crash Test Dummies - "Superman's Song", 3
Fixx - "How Much is Enough", 3
John Mellencamp - "Love & Happiness", 3
Marc Cohn - "29 Ways", 3
Matthew Sweet - "I've Been Waiting", 3
Simple Minds - "See the Lights", 3
Web Wilder - "Tough it Out", 3
Black Crowes - "Twice As Hard", 2
Bodeans - "Paradise", 2
Bonnie Raitt - "Something to Talk About", 2
Bonnie Raitt & Delbert McClinton - "Good Man, Good Woman", 2
Chris Whitley - "Big Sky Country", 2
Crowded House - "Fall At Your Feet", 2
Dire Straits - "Fade to Black", 2
Dire Straits - "The Bug", 2
Gary Moore - "Still Got the Blues", 2
Gerardo - "Rico Suave", 2
Iggy Pop - "Candy", 2
LAs - "There She Goes", 2
Mark Cohn - "Silver Thunderbird", 2
Nuclear Valdez - "(Share a Little) Shelter", 2
Pear Jam - "Black", 2
Queensryche - "Silent Lucidity", 2
Siouxsie & the Banshees - "Kiss Them For Me", 2
Talking Heads - "Sax & Violins", 2
Voice of the Beehive - "Monsters & Angels", 2

The only bustout today?

"Breaking The Girl"
