Judge on KPOO doing a mini-salute to O'Bryan, who had a couple black hits in the early '80s -- I've mentioned before that he was rumored to be Don "Soul Train" Cornelius's boyfriend. Judge just said he was "Cornelius's prize pupil, so to speak". Not sure if that was a euphemism or not.
-
OMG! Rebbie Jackson, "Centipede"! written by brother Michael. Her only hit AFAIK.
-
Maze feat. Frankie Beverly, "Silky Soul Singer", their lovely tribute to Marvin Gaye. Haven't heard this since it was a hit.
-
Judge skoolin' me in some music history: Alexander O'Neal was supposed to be the frontman of The Time, but Morris Day ended up getting the gig. Live'n'learn.
More history: the songs on Janet Jackson's Control LP were orig written by Jam & Lewis for a solo project by the lead singer of Atlantic Starr -- and she walked away from the album because she didn't think the songs were good enough! And Janet stepped in and the rest, as they say...
-
Miss Jackson-if-ya-nasty, "Miss You Much".
-
Jarreau Hands! "My Old Friend". I hope the princess is hearing this show today.

Sharon Bryant didn't want to get a Nasty reputation.
And you heard right about Alexander O as well -- "not the right fit," as the parlance goes . . .
P.S. I haven't heard Rebbie's "Centipede" or Irene Cara's "Breakdance" since 1984. And only Ollie & Jerry's "Breakin' (There's No Stopping Us)" once since then. All three are rammed together in my mind for thematic reasons.

For those of you who want Irish music that's neither Van Morrison nor drinking songs:

signed on to KPOO in time for "Loveland" by the Watts 103rd St Band. Woo Hoo!
"the following program may contain scratched and distorted sounds"
JJ starts out with Curtis M., "I'm the One Who Loves You".
-
Brenda Holloway, "Every Little Bit Hurts". Sublime.
-
Hoo Lawd! Leon Haywood's Beach Music classic, "It's Got to Be Mellow".
and really, have YOU never been mellow?
followed by Otis's orig of "Hard to Handle" Yes ah ram!
-
The orig "Wang Dang Doodle"! We gon' pitch it!
-
CG-ing today (VIP's player ain't working at the moment). Dean's gonna play "Tokoloshe Man" by John Kongos, his follow-up to "He's Gonna Step on You Again".
-
Dean spins the orig Jamaican version of 3DN's "Black & White" by a group (person?) called Greyhound.
-
Yee Haw! "Harper Valley PTA"!
-
Just like the girl in Dr. No, no, no, no... it's 10cc's "I'm Mandy, Fly Me".
"She led me
She fed me
She read me
like a book"
-
I love de chunky mama! Cass Elliot, "Dream a Little Dream". Dean backannounced her as "Mother Cass". LOL!
-
Yay! VIP's player is working -- and we start with the Mighty Clouds of Joy, "Mighty High", their only (and very Trammmps-like) pop single, which I haven't heard since the '70s. Preach it!
-
OMG! Marilyn McCoo (and Billy Davis too) with the 5D, "Workin on a Groovy Thing".
-
I am SO loving the fact that VIP plays obscure Tammi Terrell LP cuts I've never heard before. "When Love Comes Knocking At My Heart." Must track down a TT compilation.
-
and here's Manhattan Transfer, "Spice of Life", which you know instantly is a Rod Temperton song, even if you've never heard it before. MJ musta passed on this one.
-
VIP makes my week with Aretha & George, "I Knew You Were Waiting".
-
VIP Nugget o' the Day: The Valentine Bros, "Money$ Too Tight To Mention", the original from which Simply Red derived their cover version.
-
Nugget #2: First Choice, "Doctor Love" -- he's got the potion and the motion! He ain't got no competition/Only HE writes my prescription!
Haven't hear this since it was a hit.

So I switched to KGSR Austin and the first thing I hear is World Party, live in the studio today with an acoustic version of "Is it Like Today."
-
Heads up to urth (and any other Billy Bragg fans): Mr Bragg will be performing live on KGSR at 2:30pm our time.
-
KGSR.com plays instrumentals during the commercial breaks -- here's "Embryonic Journey".
-
KGSR playing something from the forthcoming Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris duets album. It's quite lovely.
-
just heard steve gould's "sympathy" (http://www.bide-et-musique.com/song/5660.html) on radio 2. i thought it was nina simone singing!
-
Mr Bragg was just wonderful -- he did "Greetings to the New Brunette" and some new tunes. As well as the reissues, he has a new CD coming out and a book.
-
Damn, of all the days to not have time to follow the board, today was a lousy one to pick (like I had a choice). Would have LOVED to have heard either World Party or Billy Bragg, or in a perfect world, both. Wasn't I just wondering what Wallinger was up to? A quick google search reveals that he's finally releasing the last World Party record, Dumbing Up (which I bought in London two years ago, and it was a couple of years old then), in the states on May 2. I'll have to go home & check to see if they've added any tracks. And supposedly they'll be back on a proper tour in May or June. Can't wait.
ETA: Did a quick compare of the new WP site vs. the AMG entry, and they've reordered the tracks, dropped two tracks and added two new ones. And early copies come with a free DVD with 3 hours+ of vids, live footage etc., so looks like I might have to spring for it. Damn, I hate when they do that.

KGSR is playing a track from the WP album called "What Can It Mean Now". They're a very impressive station.
-
CGSS is fab as always, but special mention for Shalamar's "Dancing in the Sheets", which I haven't heard in yonks.
-
Jimmy "Bo" Horne, doing "Dance Across the Floor", one of KC's Sunshine castoffs.
-
Sat nite w/JJ on KPOO, and he unearths Consumer Rapport's "Ease on Down the Road" from The Wiz. Tho' it peaked at 42 nationally, it was a top 3 single in NYC due to the ubiquitous TV commercials for that B'way show featuring the song -- it was the first musical to use TV spots as the cornerstone of its marketing campaign and sold LOTS of tix as a result.

I think MJ and La Ross's version also peaked at 42. Did they effectively cancel each other out? I've never heard CR's version. (Great name, though.)

Different years -- CR's version was in '75 (when the show was on B'way); MJ&DR was from the movie sndtkin '78.
