I'm gonna say either 1967 or 1972. I know, wimpy to hedge my bets.

'67 would be swell, but I'm sticking with '73.

I get half a win, but even better it's my favorite Moody Blues tune, "You & Me".
YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

so do you win half a point for hedging correctly?
-
72 yay!
-
Was really hoping for 72--and got it. This has been Dave's week to pick up some of the long-absent years. 75 (classic notwithstanding), 86, and now 72. Nice.
Btw, Dave started early again--I turned on at 9:57 and he was already handing out the birthday batons. Chik-o-stix again.
-
you've done it again my friend -- so, um, got any lotto numbers to pass on to your GOOD friends here?

With that avatar you are now both a princess and a goddess, so I suppose I should let you decide!
:) :D :) :D
-
I want something different off of Ziggy today, preferrably "Rock and Roll Suicide" or "Star."
"i could fall asleep at night as a rock n roll star
i could fall in love all right as a rock n roll star"

well, since your crystal ball led us to the moody blues, i'll give you a whole point!

If Dave counts at all (I'm not convinced he does), I'm sure classics don't enter into it.
-
I just love how this Moodies song has a long fuzzy guitar intro & then an equally long but different fuzzy guitar outtro.
BOS #2 - "Vahevala", maybe Dave's gonna be sticking around past 10:40 today.
-
i'll hold off on bos, but it's such a damn good song: vaheeeeeevalaaaaaah! huuuvolaaaa! shambalaaaaa!

wonderful

I want Mouth & MacNeil -- or anything Bob didn't play the other day. L&M for the princess -- the roots of Yacht Rock!

I have nothing to add at this point but am posting none the less.

I picture a big blackboard in the production room with all the years on it and check marks when they're played (classics included). It's certainly not random, and he (usually) manages to hit every "must-play" year every 4-6 weeks or so. It's unusual for him to hit something twice in 2 weeks (as he did with '75 last week) unless a special request is involved.

Heh- nice Nixon/Steely Dan transition.
-
BOS Vahevala
wonderful
Me too... Boy, I remember playing that album over and over... especially liked Vahevala.
-
driving around the Winterland neighborhood, looking for parking; in the mood before a GD show, and this song comes on the radio. Dripping with heavy consciousness. Well, you had to be there.
-
tough choices today! l&m, the dan, or my second favorite chicago song? hmm....
-
"are you optimistic
'bout the way this set is goin'?"

Could this be proto-Yacht rock?
-
I never liked them much, but at least you can say they had a strong bass line! Sounds good now. I just always thought they were ripping off Sons of Champlin. Ironic, isn't it?

Hey Beej, I'm puttin' thi shere 'cuz I seldom see you, have you seen the IMDb entry for Spidey III yet?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0413300/
They're bringing in the Gwen Stacey character, to be played by Ron Howard's luminescent daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard.

re Spiderman 3
Indeed I had heard that!
That whole arc was a big deal back in the day.

I don't have quite such a specific vision of how they do it, but yeah, I agree--certain years pop up too consistently every 4 weeks or so to be totally random. And it seems like 70 thru 73 have now become special/really old/Friday years, lumped in with 67 thru 69. It's rare that those years come up in the middle of a week, or so it seems.
-
I think it's more like "I haven't done '72 in a while." Or whatever year. So everything gets into the rotation eventually. But I don't think there's a big blackboard somewhere. Could be wrong.
But I don't think he counts "classic" sets.

Based on several things, including direct comments from Dave & Irish Greg, my understanding is that Dave really just keeps it all in his head. He has stated that he doesn't keep archives back as long as even one year.

Could be--he's been doing it long enough.
But as for the archives--somebody must be keeping recordings of old sets (maybe not ALL sets) because when I've been able to pinpoint the original airdates, the classics we've heard over the last year or two have been 4 to 6 years old, at least.

well then he's REALLY good.

Woo Hoo - Creedence!!
Not even close to my favorite CCR song, but it just reminds me how GREAT they were ... IMHO the best of John Fogerty compares real favorably with Lennon/McCartney ... they had just a great sound...

BOS CCR
BOS2 Nils Lofgren & Grin.

BOS CCR
BOS2 Nils Lofgren & Grin.
Yeah, BOS2 to Grin.
-
BOS3 Sly. Look at you foolin' you!
-
Nils gets my BOS--White Lies.
Found this album on vinyl at a yard sale the block over from me a couple of years ago. They had some great stuff, but they thought it was all collectors stuff (they were only partly right) and wouldn't go below $3 per album--which is way too much for old vinyl unless it's been out of print for ages. I bought a few things I knew were tough to find and left a bigger stack in the box.

I should clarify: Dave himself doesn't keep records of anything. Someone at the station records & saves the sets for playback evenings & Saturdays, but if Dave really wanted to find out what he played last year on March 10 he'd probably have to go to the station & listen to the tape. I kinda doubt that they're even cross referenced by year. And before they did the Saturday marathon not every set got saved past the evening replay, this Dave has told me for a fact.

a rare non-thematic segue from Munich to "Tiny Dancer". Kinda jarring, actually.
-
Jungle fever. Cue the cold shower....
-
uh-oh. "Jungle Fever", Chakachas. This one's aimed directly at Jose, I'm sure...
-
Jungle fever. Cue the cold shower....
I had to turn this down, my coworkers were beginning to stare.
-
Jungle fever. Cue the cold shower....
WOS -- novelty crap.

I thought so too, but Tiny Dancer does have an elegiac effect on me.

cool, major hail storm right now. Lots visible on ground.

It's no "Je T'aime", that's for sure.

what a lame set ending. might as well have played jackson browne. ;)
-
Proxy WOS for Gaz, "Take it Easy".
-
what a lame set ending. might as well have played jackson browne. ;)
In a way, he did. But I'd've preferred "Doctor My Eyes".
I found the whole set a bit underwhlming, after a nice start.

WOS 2. :x
-
Still, give Dave credit for a full 45 minute set on a Friday. That's something anyway.
-
Not WOS but least necessary.
Are we tracking Jose for real!!!??
Is he the current object of desire?

Yeah, the Moodies, Nils and Chakachas were as close as we got to rarities, and they aren't all THAT rare.

We're tracking Jose because Dave SAYS we are. I suspect Jose has a very sexy accent.

cool, major hail storm right now. Lots visible on ground.
Went to a movie tonite in West Portal, and as the film started there was a hail/sleet/thunderstorm going on outside. Afterward, there was slush on the roof of my Jeep -- and in SF proper that happens, like, once a decade.

I'll bet it was pretty loud out your way. Out here at the beach, really large fluffy hail poured down, and the street was white for a few minutes, tracks of the car tires up and down the street. I spent some time looking out our back window (eastward, towards West Portal) and saw some intense lightning bolts. I even saw a huge horizontal bolt. Pretty rare for these parts.

I was likely watching the same lightning display at about 7pm, looking west from my Inner Sunset window--we turned off all the lights and just watched. Yeah, there were some amazing lightning bolts--a couple of them hit trees or utility poles up the hill in Golden Gate Heights. Quite breathtaking, and pretty damn loud when they hit nearby. We never lost power, but we drove thru that area a couple hours later and there were still blocks that were dark. The hailstorm was pretty fun, but I was glad to be home and not out in it.
Every time we have a lightning storm here (which is pretty rare), I remember one that I spent more than two hours watching in North Carolina about 8 years ago. It just went on and on and on--literally hundreds of lightning strikes all around us. Again, we turned off the lights, opened the curtains in our hotel room and just took it all in. Mother Nature can be one powerful old broad when she wants to be.

Just a repositioning post, really. Hope I don't get struck by lightning on the golf course tomorrow morning. 7:15 tee time, Tilden Park... brrrrrr.

Pretty funny about these 'repositioning posts!' So, easy Rod, that hilly course must be pretty wet and slippery with all this rain! And yes, it will be cold. I imagine you might get some delays if the greens are frozen too!
