Yeah, happy birthday Mark...
BOS, Bugs and company.

If I'd known Dave was looking for suggestions: Garland Jeffreys' "35 Millimeter Dreams" woulda been mine.
OK I know this song from the Vonage commercials, but WTF?
-
#2 is not quite so obscure--guessing it's Street's of Philadelphia...ah yes, there it is. The snare pattern was not a dead giveaway.
-
hoping for some ennio or badalamenti.
-
"da customer is awayz white!"
speaking of... you NEED to see CSA: Confederate States of America at the Roxie. Amazing.
-

you're lucky. it's forever emblazoned on my brain.
-
always nice to hear the Symphony version of "Star Wars", which was a Top 20 single in its own right, at the same time Meco's version was a smash.
-
VHM, Star Wars.
-
Nice to hear Star Wars.
-
Since the Artful Dodger is my current avatar, I'm rooting for something from Oliver!
whoooo will buuuuy
this wonderful morning?
Well, maybe not.
-
OK we just heard "Mizerlou" in the Instrumental set very recently, no?
-

In my email I mentioned it being my 43rd, but he either didn't notice or just likes to say that about somebody once in a while. I said:
howsabout "Miss Misery" from Good Will Hunting by the late great Elliott Smith? It got beat out for an Oscar in '97 by Titanic's "My Heart Will Go On" (which would also give you an excuse, however slim, to play a snippet of the Kinsey Sicks' spoof thereof).
In fact playing "Miss Misery" right after this here "Miserlou" would have some nice alliteration...

looks like a winner!

Woo hoo, Wang Chung!
I forget if we've covered this before, but how many of you guys haven't ever seen this movie?
Among other things, this movie gave us bungie-jumping.

Me neither. And no woo hoo for WC from me, though this isn't nearly as bad as their hits. So what movie is Miserlou from?

I like it too, but Dave is using a broad definition of "going to the movies" to include this. Is Big Audio Dynamite next?

I haven't seen TLADILA either. Guess there's gonna be a run on it at bay area vid stores and/or netflix.
So was that older soundtrack piece after Wang Chung one of the songs, or just a bumper?
I sure didn't expect Friends of Mr. Cairo--but I'm not givin' it a BOS either.
And yeah, Mark, Elliot Smith's Miss Misery would be a GREAT call. Not holding my breath, but great nonetheless.

He said "songs from or about" movies. So this certainly qualifies. As would "Celluloid Heroes", for example.
-
BOS - Jon and Vangelis. (Just cause I'm an unrecovered Yes addict)

It is an excellent film, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090180/) directed by William (French Connection, Exorcist) Friedkin. I know I have been accused of spoilers before, so just suffice to say that there is a plot development late in the movie that there is no way you'll be expecting.
-
another song I know from a commercial, not a film.
-
I'd dance like the queen of the eyesores, the rest of our lives would be fare-thee-well...
BOS to The Shinns!
-
BOS Barry. John Barry. Gotta have Bond in a movie set. OMG! Miss Shirley Bassey! another BOS.
But. Don't. Go. IN!
TANC: last nite Little Steven played Weird Al's "Theme from Spy Hard!", basically a Bond theme parody.
-
A Bond medley? This is likely to get my BOS.
(Btw, thanks for IDing the Shinns, MS. I thought for a sec we WERE getting the Elliot Smith tune, but not to be.)
-
oooohhhhh James!

There are 3 things in life that are inevitable: Death, Taxes & the inclusion of "Philadelphia" & "Goldfinger" in every KFOG Goes to the Movies set.

well, bos to bowie, natch.

Well I'm glad he's playing it, not just becasue the song is such a classic, but also since otherwise J &V would have been the oddball's of the set.
-

Natch.
Kinks are good too.
-
BOS 4 or 5 Kinks. And Ray Davies wonders why everybody thought he was gay.
-
Gotta represent for the Kinks and Mr. Davies. Just picked up his new solo record over the weekend, but have yet to crack the cellophane. Will report back after I've given it a few listens. Also ordered the import versions of Something Else.... and Arthur... after I couldn't find em locally.
Been in a big Kinks phase for awhile now, if I haven't mentioned it.

ohmigodcatherine! jose LOST for once!
-
Fess up, Mike. It was you calling in wondering what Jose chose. Right???
-
ohmigodcatherine! jose LOST for once!
I thought Jose didn't always pick the popular fave, but his picks usually agree with DM's.

oh, yeah, you're right.

Well, I saw (and liked) Garden State, but completely forgot the Shinns.
And I saw (and disliked) both Kill Bills, so I guess I blocked the 5-6-7-8s or whoever that was. It'll forever be the Vonage song to me.
-

Btw, Mike, I noticed your comment re: Jose in Dave's blog. Nice.

Did ya see Big Rick's weird Oscar joke? WTF?

a bit late, but I meant to say that this is the song in Garden State about which Natalie Portman says: "You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life, I swear."
-
Bonus: "Little Green Bag". So Tarentino gets THREE shoutouts this morning.
-
Dang me, "Little Green Bag" is the bonus track.
Once again Annalisa rules!

They only time I ever hear it is when I am playing disc 1 of my Have A Nice Decade box set.

Dave played it in his 1970 set, Fri 2/24. A fab tune in any case.

Speaking of Natalie Portman:

(Btw, might need headphones for this. Naughty words have been bleeped, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out what they are. A word to the wise.)

A belated Merry Birthday to my good friend Mshray.
Sorry I missed it; it was kind of a rough day at the Voice. I'm filling in there for two weeks while the copy chief is on vacation, and things are a mess. Between the unwelcome intrusions of the New Times management, its resultant shortages in staffing in key areas, and the Nick Sylvester drama (if you don't already know, Google it), morale is astonishingly, frighteningly low, and a shift that was supposed to end for me at 8 with the closing of the final pages has only now, at 1am, set me free (and I'm due back at 11 tomorrow for more of the same). I never would have dreamed that I'd be looking forward to leaving the Voice for a women's magazine (oh yeah, I got the Jane gig), but I'm told Conde Nast treats its freelancers very well.
Yeah, I should have posted this in the Self-Indulgence thread, but too late.

Site must be down--it's timing out on me too. And I don't recall the exact specifics of the Jose query, so just check back tomorrow.

Wait a sec. You mean it's pronounced "Van-< HARD G >-elis"? I thought it was pronounced like "Van-Jealous" all these years! I'm confused.
-
Again, the fun part is to read the comment in the voice of my current avatar. At least I hope so. :)

Congrats on the Janeyjaneyjaneyjane gig! Margaritas for everybody!

I'm in agreement with you. I think Dave has been mispronouncing it--he was the first person I ever heard pronounce it with the hard G.
Eeew, KFOG's playing the Pearl Jam cover of Last Kiss. Potential cheese when 2002 gets on the wheel in 2012..

Beat me! -- I was just about to comment that I hadn't heard that in a while and that it's still awful. But I suspect KFOG's reviving it because they're planning to play the new Pearl Jam, which is out any day now.
But as to Vangelis, it is indeed pronounced with a "hard" G:

Not me, I always heard it pronounced van-gay-lis when we were hearing Aphrodite's Child & iirc, at the Oscars when Chariots of Fire was nommed.
Anybody speak modern Greek?

Wang CHUG? LOL! Guess he couldn't decide if it was "Celluloid Heroes" or "Celluloid Heroin"...
But Dave screwed up too: in his backannounce he identified the Bond theme as being by John Williams instead of John Barry.
