KPOO's Blues show is playing some swingin' old live Lou Rawls LP. "Girl from Ipenema". Go Lou!
-
ooo! finally Mr Rawls' "Natural Man", which I've been jonesin' for since Friday. "It's a new day, babies!"
And now he's duetting with someone (dunno who) on "Fine Brown Frame".
ETA apparently it was Dianne Reeves.
-
Monday afternoon wit da Judge! He's s-s-s-smokin' today. Jones Girls, "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else".
-
OMG! Musique, "Push Push In the Bush"! And now Peaches & Herb shakin' they groove thangs!
ETA: Now here's P&H doing one of their "Groove Thing"-soundalike follow-ups, "Roller-Skatin' Mate" (!) which I have heard OF, but never heard.
-

Trivia of the day: That song was written or co-written (I forget which) by Bobby Hebb ("Sunny").

you are correct sir: "Bobby Hebb & S. Baron" per Top 40 db.
"Ya never said no -- y'know?"
-
up in Harlem, down on Broadway: Odyssey, "Native NYer". Heaven.
-
and now my fave J-5 non-hit, "Blame it on the Boogie."
"We spent the night in 'Frisco
MacCauley brought the Crisco..."
and speaking of Frisco & Crisco: Sylvester!
-
wow, the Sylvers' "High School Dance", which I haven't heard since 1977.
and now a Peter Brown twin-spin! (betcha never expected to see that phrase written anywhere) "You Should Do It" and "Dance With Me".
Followed by Melba Moore covering the Bee Gees' "You Stepped into my Life".
-
Tues: Dean plays "resurrection Shuffle" -- the AG&D version. I was hoping for Tom Jones, but this'll do.
-
here's a rarity: "Third Finger, Left Hand", a 1972 Brit hit by a female duo called the Pearls, actually a cover of a Martha & the Vandellas LP cut (a Holland/Dozier/Holland tune). New to me.
-
proxy swoon for poc: Lulu, "The Boat That I Row".
-
Wow! Dean plays Love Sculpture (feat. Dave Edmunds) doing a rockin' gee-tar version of "Sabre Dance".
-
another wow -- Bowie's "Laughing Gnome".
-
from the tiny island of Tonga: the Jets, "Crush on You".
-
Dean is blowing my mind today. Here's a reggaefied instrumental from 1969 called "Liquidator" by the Harry J Allstars (?) and it features the opening riff that the Staples later used for "I'll Take You There"!
And now another one that's new to me: the disco-poppy "I Love To Love" by Tina Charles (?) which was apparently a UK #1 in '76. Amazing.
-
WLNG Nugget o' the Day: Elton, "I'm So Excit -- er, "I'm Still Standing". I'm astounded this has never been played on a KFOG 10@10.

You sure? I couldn't quote day or date or anything like that, but I think we've heard it, although not more than once or twice.

Maybe Gaz can help us out -- I know he & I discussed the fact that this is a song that (knowing Dave's tastes) ought to be a Katrina.

I won't say "never," but it's been a long, long time, if ever. Indeed, Dave generally avoids '80s Elton, save for the rare appearance of "Nikita," "I Guess That's Why..." and "I Don't Wanna Go On w/ You Like That." Feh. Would love to hear his lesser-known charters like "Chloe" and "In Neon."
-
WLNG Nugget o' the Day: GrassRoots, "Two Divided By Love".
-
Nugget #2: OMFG! the original Madeline Bell version of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" -- haven't heard this in ages.
-
WLNG Nugget o' the Day: GrassRoots, "Two Divided By Love".
I just posted this song yesterday to the I Love Music message board: someone wanted to hear people's Top 10 of the first 10 numbers. My favorites at that moment:
One = Three Dog Night
Two Divided By Love = Grass Roots
Three Is a Magic Number = De La Soul
Four to the Floor = Starsailor
5-7-0-5 = City Boy (though I should have gone with "Take Five")
Band 6 = Monkees (though I should have gone with "25 or 6 to 4")
Seven More Days = Terence Trent D'Arby (argument for "7 and 7 Is")
Eight Days a Week = Beatles
#9 Dream = John Lennon
Ten Little Kids = Jayhawks

Damn fine set, although I think I'd go with your alternate for 7, and could go either way on the other two options.

CGSS: Greg soulfully struts over to the vocal version, "Am I the Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin. Haven't heard this in ages.
-
for MLK weekend, Greg plays Gary Byrd's "The Crown", an absolutely wonderful black-history rap (with help from Stevie Wonder) that came out in '83 or '84. I'd LOVE to turn Dave on to this one, it certainly would be perfect in Monday's MLK set. A huge hit in the UK and a flop here, even tho' Mr Byrd was a NYC deejay.
-
Stargard, channeling Rose Royce on "Which Way is Up?" from the Richard Pryor film of that name.
Followed by the MJGs. "meet me on the rooftop... in the night... come and get my love delight!"
-
Gonzalez, "Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet". Not to be confused with Capt & Tenille's "Can't Stop Dancin'", speaking of HFHs.
and here's Tina doing "Disco Inferno". Now THAT's a cover version. Burn the mutha DOWN!
-
OMGWTFLOL! switched over to 'LNG in time for the Partridges, "I Woke Up in Love This Morning"!
-
and now KPOO's JJ doin' his soul thang. Marvin Banks (?) doing a rather slavish cover of "What's Goin' On?" I wonder how many of today's kids think that lyric is "mama mama... we don't need an Escalade". LOL!
-
JJ's playing some MLK tape I have never heard. "God did not call this country to do what it's doing in the world today!" Amen!
Followed by the Jones Girls, "I Just Love the Man". "Girl, I'm not tryin' to get in yo' business..."
-

i wonder how many of today's kids really think they *don't* need an escalade?

The irony is that I'm looking forward to Sunday, when we get to do a lot of music at church relating to MLK, and how I'm looking to him for help and inspiration on how to handle the kids who call me racist to my face at school.

It seems that a lot of people, particularly inarticulate youth, inorrectly suggest "racist" = "you don't get my culture." I'd guess that those kids are just trying to express the frustration that what's meaningful and relevant in their worlds isn't deemed meaningful and relevant by the systems around them. Only thing I can say, Geoff, with my sympathy for your situation, is (a) don't take it personally; and (b) bone up on your Young Jeezy. He's the hot shit right now.

it seems like it's a way to deflect personal responsibility, and make it my fault they are having problems. Young Jeezy?
-
Young Jeezy?
He dated Young Weezy before she met George Jefferson.
-
Saturday nite with JJ on KPOO: Pointers, "Betcha Got a Chick on the Side", which I haven't heard in years. Followed by the Miracles, "Do It Baby" and Tower of Power's fabulous, not-heard-often-enough "This Time It's Real", the follow-up to "So Very Hard to Go".

The first time I ever heard "Do It Baby," I assumed it was a Diana Ross followup to "Love Hangover." Was amazed to learn who it was.
Oh shit, my EMP proposal is due in under 48 hours . . .
