Title: Thurs Dec 22--it's 1987
Post by: urth on December 22, 2005, 10:02:37 AM
Did I hear correctly? Yikes, another 80s set--we're back to the old tradition of mediocre 80s sets when Dave's on holiday.

Oh my yes.  Except for yesterday, this has been one lame-ass week.

If I hear some Love & Rockets, T'Pau, Communards or Swing Out Sister I'll forgive him, but not much else from '87 fells like it's overdue.

betcha 10 bucks we hear Fleetwood Mac "Little Lies".

ETA:  goes without saying that we WON'T get "When Smokey Sings", much to Mike's & my ongoing disappointment.

From Wang Chung to Jon Astley...

Since I know there's almost never been a really good '87 set (IMHO), I'm gonna bail. Talk to ya thru today, and I'll be around for Ginger & Dave tomorrow -- before I head out to see King Kong.  Merry Happy and Happy Merry, all!

Special wishes to Gaz for a swift end to the MTA strike (I hear they're talking, at least).

Okay, "Solitude Standing" instead of "Luka" is not bad.

I'm betting on Robbie Robertson and/or Pink Floyd. Or George Harrison.

Wish I could convince Dave to play the Bears' Fear is Never Boring--a great song, and it's beatle-y enought I'd think he'd dig it.

Indeed.  And the line from this to "Sunny Came Home" suddenly seems a short one.

Was forming the same thought.

Hearing this Chris Isaak makes me realize that we got a much smaller dose of him in '05 than previous years, at least in the 2nd half.

I've been considering the current trend in year selections lately. It seems to me that the most-commonly played years--at least for the latter half of 05--have been from 1975 to 1988 or so, while formerly common years such as 71 through 74 have now become as infrequent as the 60s used to be (and still are, although we're getting a wider range of 60s years, now that DM has rediscovered 65 and 66.)  I haven't had a chance to tabulate the stats for this year yet, but I'm hoping to do so, perhaps next week. I'm anxious to find out if reality supports my instincts or if I'm just trippin'.

ETA: if this is the case, it would be attributable to the aging of the populace, and the fact that people who were born in the 70s are now skewing into the KFOG demographic. The general KFOG playlist seems to be containing far more 80s-vintage songs than it did even five years ago.

Same is true of Joni.  I wonder if they've not been "testing" well of late.

*double groan*

but, amongst my very pun-intentional extended family, a "groaner" is actually the highest compliment one can give.

I sure wish that our avatars weren't interactively updated.  It would be cool to look back on this page someday & see all the santa hats.

methinks that is a dead-on analysis, sir.

It's a Starship fix for our pal Gaz--took me a minute or two to realize who this was. (Although I'm sure all of us would rather be hearing Miracles again.)

Spotting the vinyl on the Starship.  Sounds really crackly and a little warped to my ears.

P.S.  Produced by the real Narada.

I don't know how much or even if Gaz will object, but in my book "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is perhaps the worst song ever nominated for an Oscar.  It might come from the worst movie ever to produce a nominated song.

Oh, I dunno -- that "hymn" to Satan from The Omen is pretty damned awful.  Not to mention "You Light Up My Life". I'll get out my Oscar book tonite and compile a list.

Agreed, but logistically it would be kind of a pain (wouldn't it?) to maintain server copies of all the past avatars over time.

I can think of several ways to accomplish it, but it hardly seems worth the effort.  And eventually you'd run into space/clutter issues.

I think server space is probably the main issue. Even at 78KB max per avatar, when you think about the number of different ones we've seen just in the past 11 months (yes, we've been using this app for only 11 months--a year ago we were still on discserver--it seems like ages, don't it?), it would add up to a decent amount of space.

Well, everyone can email their avatars, and I'll upload and post from the 10at10club directory if you like.  Is POC Santa-compliant yet?

I gotta start using that on my kids:

"Adrian! Gabriel!  CUT THAT OUT!!!  That is NOT Santa-compliant!!!"

but I didn't mean to actually challenge you to keep the avatars up, I was just being wistful.

Now, I just want to know, are we all now participants in the War against Christmas?  I mean, should we replace the Santa hats with Crowns of Thorns, or what?  Don't want the fundies raiding the joint, ya know?
