and Geoff got birthday greetings!
Double yay!!
-
And an early BOS to the Stones in their groovy psychedelic period, Dandelion! (Was this on Satanic Majesties, or another of that era, like Metamorphosis?)
-
Just popped in to say "Happy Birthday, Geoff!" You rule!
Happy 1967!
I'm at home getting ready for a murder mystery. Crappy dial-up. Logging off.
Have a great weekend one & all!
-
happy birthday, geoff! early bos to stevie!! woohoo!

HAPPY BDAY GEOFF!!!!!!!!!
I missed the opening. Will have to catch the replay tonight.

yay for the who!! we watched "tommy" in the bar the other night. i realised i'd never seen it sober, and, therefore, didn't remember having ever seen the last 45 minutes of the movie. pretty strange messiachic twist.

Messiah Chic?
Happy B-Day Geoff. No BOS to "I'm a Believer", since Bob gave us the much more interesting "She".
-
I'm a Believer too!!!!!!!!!!! :)
-
I second the BOS(2) for the Who, and BOS3 to the Monkees, the best thornoughly contrived pop group ever. With a tip o the hat to Neil Sedaka--at least Bob Rafelson had the sense to hire good songwriters.
-
woohoo!!! 2nd bos to the big o! "that's alright!"

Have you ever seen Privilege? 1967, British, pop-star-becomes fascist-leader? Amazing stuff. Starring Paul Jones (of Manfred Mann) and Jean Shrimpton at their Mod loveliest.
-
So we heard the Stones and the Who and the Doors and the Monkees--but no Beatles? (yay!) We've gotta be nearing song #10.
-

I'll give the nod to Johnny Rivers too. A nice song, and only slightly novelty-esque.
-
another bos for johnny rivers!
Ditto. Another should-be-in-the-RnRHOF-but -isn't.
Jeez, Buckinghams again (dif song tho'). does Dave monitor Bob?

Anything's possible. He was synching up with Ginger earlier in the week... ;)

See now, I would argue with Dave that "now for something completely different" doesn't apply AT ALL to the segue from the Who to the Prefab Four. Two different shades of power pop, ya feel?
And pedant alert: while the Monkees did record a few Neil Sedacky songs, "I'm a Believer" was a Neil Diamond effort. They did have some amazing songwriters in their pen.

I was thinking the same thing about the segue. Not that much different for me neither. Unless Dave was going for some "authentic/fake" juxtaposition. I don't know....
-
I didn't think I'd say this, having seen the set list earlier, but I gotta give BOS to Johnny Rivers. Most of stuff is dorky to my ears, but he really shines on this one. I like his originals well enough, I suppose; it's the covers that grate on me.
Sledgehammer of set = the Doors. First guy I ever really fell in love with was a huge Doors fan, and so I spent the summer of 1993 devouring, inhaling, studying, memorizing their work. Now he looks back on that fanboyhood as a phase, and I'm saddened to realize that I kind of do too.

I think that's exactly what Dave was going for -- that's certainly how purists saw the two groups back then. Besides, "Miles" is a dark rock song; "Believer" is upbeat pop. Only in retrospect have we come to realize the craft behind the Monkees or the continuum that includes Beatles/Who/Monkees/Raspberries and on and on. But that the Monkees were anything other than bubblegum was a minority opinion in 1967.

agreed -- and it's a lovely piece of songwriting that has gained in power as the years have passed. What seemed like a too-current reference to Sgt Pepper in 1967 is now a time-capsule glimpse of something iconic.

Sorry, not I. Had hoped to but was out later than I'd thought Friday night & missed the first few songs. Then Saturday it was the first set of the Marathon (which wouldn't have included the Birthday Club anyway) which started before I awoke. Apologies--had really wanted to pull this one off.

Hope you had a great birthday. I heard the replay Friday night and Dave reported many fingers and toes being celebrated.
