Title: 4 June 2015: it's... 2000
Post by: RGMike on June 04, 2015, 07:45:03 AM
Y2K comes back to play, per the promo I heard this morning.  "The year of the hanging chad."

I think I'll bypass this one. Have fun, kidz.

In that case, I will stick around and take notes!

ETA: Since AL didn't take requests, it will be all her selections... can Foo Fighters be in the mix?

ETA2: Just realized there hasn't been a 2004 or 2005 set yet, interestingly enough.

TOTHK - U2 "Beautiful Day"

ETA: I wonder if all of the selections today will show up on KFOG's TuneGenie player.

No Doubt "Simple Kind Of Life"

ETA: I wonder if all of the selections today will show up on KFOG's TuneGenie player.

Guess not: U2 shows up, but not No Doubt.

High Fidelity ---> Coldplay "Yellow"

I can hear Mike's "UBER-LN"....

ETA: For those who care and/or are keeping score, "Yellow" shows up on TuneGenie.

ETA2: Along with my Foo Fighters prediction, can David Gray's "Babylon" be in the mix, too?

More High Fidelity ---> Moby "Porcelain"

Heard this song on PBS promos all of the time a few years back.

ETA: "Porcelain" pops up on TuneGenie.

Shortly before 10@10 commenced, we heard Moby/Gwen Stefani's Southside. And now they've both appeared in this set. Hmmm.

Broadcast "Come On Let's Go"

That was kind of an abrupt segue between Moby and this one. I wasn't sure at first if it was just part of the Moby tune.

The U2 and Coldplay songs are the only ones I remember hearing regularly in the KFOG rotation circa 2000. So points for not sticking with the songs we're used to hearing.

High Fidelity overload, although it's not Cusack bemoaning, it's Jack Black this time ---> The Dandy Warhols "Bohemian Like You"

ETA: Broadcast, Blink 182, and Smash Mouth are no shows on TuneGenie, but The Dandy Warhols do show up.

Smash Mouth "Then The Morning Comes"

Also not a FF, but for some reason I am not getting a positive response to this one.

Best segue of the set.

Tom Brokaw declares Al Gore wins, Dan Rather says otherwise ---> 3 Doors Down "Kryptonite"

ETA: TuneGenie acknowledges "Kryptonite".

More High Fidelity ---> The White Stripes "Hello Operator"

ETA: Kudos to AL for not playing any Foo Fighters or "Babylon".  And The White Stripes don't show up on TuneGenie.

ETA2: Wow, this set was relatively short -- ended around 10:37 -- making up for the really long 1985 set on Tuesday?

I can hear Mike's "UBER-LN"....

yeah, this and the U2 are the obvious KFOG rotation fodder here. And the Dandy Warhols tune is AL's go-to Katrina for Y2K sets.

But the rest, tho' not terribly appealing to me, was at least rarity/bustout territory.

Agreed, even though I can't say I got a warm fuzzy from hearing this set, she definitely opted for a number of lesser heard tunes -- and two bustouts is significant. Broadcast gets my BOS, and I freely admit to not having heard it before today. White Stripes get VHM.

And can I just say that I have officially reached saturation for that Samuel Adams Summer Ale ad that's been in heavy rotation on the stream. (We heard it twice during the break between today's set and the first song that followed it.) The voice of the guy who's reading the scripted parts of the ad ("I love the summer ales!") has become like sandpaper to my ears.

---> The Dandy Warhols "Bohemian Like You"

So here's that song
Yeah, I know it's overplayed
But it's got a catchy beat
that's getting stuck inside my head
I really like
that singer, yeah
He sings it really fast
But it still sounds pretty cool, you betcha

So here's that part
Where they just play lots of toms
Well I like the sound of drums
Don't you really love them too?
But if you dig on the guitar
The refrain is coming soon
It has a good hook
A lot better than Coldplay's

'Cause I like it
Yeah I like it
And I'm feeling so lyrical like you
Yeah I like it
Yeah I like it
And I feel so whoa ho woo!
Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh
