Title: 27 March 2015: it's... 1986
Post by: RGMike on March 26, 2015, 09:07:21 PM
The thread is coming soon, per AL. I'm predicting 1986.

ETA: I was right!

Hmmm, my Anita Baker request is getting some love -- will AL finally play "Sweet Love"? :)

Not feeling The Call.

ETA: Loving the "ST4:The Voyage Home" clips. You think AL did a little too much LDS in the sixties?

Never heard B52s' "She Brakes for Rainbows".

AL was in grammar school in the '60s, methinks. :)  And the Call is a pretty egregious FF.

Aside from the Daryl Hall, I'll VHM the B52s song for rarity (a bustout?) but otherwise this has been pretty tried-n-true.

Heh, yeah I know it's before her time. Just trying to be clever :-).  And both "Wildest Dreams" and "Don't Get Me Wrong" are played out. Iggy Pop pretty unnecessary too.

I've never been fond of '80s Moodies. Cameo ends us on a HAAAAY.

I was reflecting on the Moodies vs the Pretenders...thought that though they're the same age, "Wildest Dreams" sounds seriously dated, but "Don't Get Me Wrong" could be released today. It's probably just that I know that the Moodies were on the way out, and Pretenders are still around today, but I'm sure you can dig it.

Not feeling The Call.

I'll be the contrarian and say I was feeling The Call today.  It does kind of match my mood lately.

I think there are a lot of people in Utah who are doing too much LDS these days...

Since the topic has come up... my best guess, based on biographical comments she's made and
her professed affinity for it, is that AL's natal year is 1966.  Even if I'm off by a bit, at best she's
in kindergarten by 1970.

I thought the Moodies were on the way out in the early '70s -- 1972's Seventh Sojurn was okay, but not quite up
to their previous work.  Then there was a gap of several years until their next release.  In any case, they are very much
of the sixties, and that decade's optimism and idealism shows in their music.  Also, some people classify the Moody Blues
as early progressive rock, and they certainly fit that bill to the extent that they used classical instrumentation and toyed
with longer compositions.

In contrast, The Pretenders are firmly of the eighties, with its swirl of post-Watergate cynicism, post-"me decade"
hedonism, and post-punk nihilism.  And no one could mistake them for a prog rock band.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... however, if one band still sounds fresh while another is dated, perhaps it is a
reflection that both idealism and progressive rock never regained the popularity they enjoyed 40+ years ago.

3/27/15 Taking the Voyage Back to ....1986!!

(Movie featured: Star Trek IV- The Voyage Home)
 1.  The Call- I Still Believe (Grand Design)
 2.  The Thompson Twins- King For A Day
 3.  Huey Lewis & The News- Hip To Be Square
 4.  Talk Talk- Life's What You Make It (B.O.S!)
 5.  The B-52's- She Brakes for Rainbows
 6.  Daryl Hall- Dreamtime
 7.  The Moody Blues- Your Wildest Dreams
 8.  The Pretenders- Don't Get Me Wrong
 9.  Iggy Pop- Real Wild Child
10.  Cameo- Word Up
(Movie: Star Trek IV : Spock (Leonard Nimoy) "Live Long and Prosper")

Hmmm, AL picked the "safest" of my requests to play: Huey Lewis and the News (surprisingly a bustout).

"Don't Get Me Wrong" could be released today.

I think of this and another hit of that time, "Don't Dream It's Over" as foreshadowing the AAA format we love so much. Just didn't know it at the time.

"Wildest Dreams" sounds seriously dated -  It's probably just that I know that the Moodies were on the way out

Don't the Blues have some sort of obscure record of having top tens in three different decades, with those three being their only top tens? Regardless, however one feels about their later material, the presence of such did introduce them to impressionable 15 year olds in 1986, whereas even knowing about the likes of The Grass Roots and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap would have to wait awhile.

I was surprised as well.  Today's other big surprise:  four bust-outs!  BOS to the Twins and
the B-52's.
