Title: 20 March 2015: it's... 1997
Post by: RGMike on March 19, 2015, 09:05:05 PM
Well, not '99 but '90s nonetheless. "As Good as it Gets" indeed.

Kit Kat jingle --> Bowie /Trent Reznor "I'm Afraid of Americans"  Not a bustout but worthy. BOS1.

And the third set this week to kick off with a Bowie tune. Only the 88 and St. Paddy's day sets fall outside that trend.

ETA: Just me or were the levels on the Bowie/NIN tune much lower than everything that followed it?

Buck-O-Nine, "My Town" -- some ska-revival that we haven't heard, I don't think -- certainly not as often as MM Bosstones or Reel Big Fish.

Yeah, I'll give it a VHM -- it appears to be a bustout.

Elliott Smith, "Miss Misery" -- his Oscar nominated song from Good Will Hunting, iirc.

halfway in, and this hasn't been half-bad.

Indeed, very fine lineup of songs so far.

I can't hear anything by Elliott Smith without getting melancholy. He really did leave this plane too soon. One of the most gifted songwriters I've ever seen.

Was the movie clip from The Wedding Singer? Def. Adam Sandler, but he didn't have any '97 releases (per IMDB) so no help there.

it was GWH apparently.

This Verve tune is a rarity, tho' we heard it a couple times (once in '97, once in a Friday the 13th "Lucky" set).

U2 "Staring at the Sun"

There are no coincidences: When this song came on I was copyediting a slideshow about solar eclipses. Now *that's* creepy.

Oh and very glad to hear a U2 song we haven't heard a bezillion times before.

Not only that! I was listening to KPIG this morning, and they played a clip of Brian Regan doing a routine in which he mentioned that a childhood activity was the "staring at the sun" contest.

There's a big-deal solar eclipse today (tho' not visble here, I don't think) so I guess the choice was deliberate.

heard once before, last year, in the same set we heard the Verve tune.

Note when that setlist was posted, they were mis-identified as "The Venue". WTF?

Beat me to it. Nonetheless, a great song and another welcome rarity. She really put some time in constructing this setlist, clips and all.

I've noticed that the Don Pardo sign-off on Friday's is still "but we'll do it again on Monday"
instead of "but we'll do it again tomorrow" with a nod for the marathon.
