Seriously, we get more '00s sets than '90s. We really oughta hit '04 soon, just in the interest of variety.
-
I plus-one'd the Cap'n's suggestions of Kylie Minogue ("Can't Get You Out of My Head") and Gorillaz ("Clint Eastwood", aka "I've got sunshine in a bag") and given recent trends I wouldn't be surprised if AL plays either or both.
But I'll probably sit this one out nonetheless. Interesting that we're doing 2001 the day before Sept 11th. Loudon Wainwright's "No Sure Way to Know" would be a nice set-closer.
-
RGMike, are you too busy going postal to post? Cake's Short Skirt, Long Jacket is playing as the TOTHK, btw. What does going postal entail exactly?
:D
-
missed the TOTHK
Nelly Furtado "I'm Like A Bird"
getting called away -- someone else keep posting!
-
"I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away"
Nelly Furtado, I'm Like a Bird
Underwhelming so far
-
SSLJ = quite possibly the LN’est of all 2001 LNs
I’m Like a Bird = Extremely grating song IMO, even more extremely grating version

oy vey. uber-uber-LN. Nowhere to go but up. Glad I'm not listening.
-
Funny, I really liked "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" the first 750 times I heard it. Now, yeah, definitely LN.
"I'm Like A Bird" was/is/will be annoying.
-
I don't know what this third song is. My baby daughter enjoys twiddling the knobs on the radio, and with the low quality of the selections thus far, I'm not inclined to spoil her fun.
It's interesting that, while pre-AAA era sets are now chock full of forgotten AM radio hits, there appears to be no need for that type of song during years after the AAA format had come into bloom. There's already a comfortable groove there for the corporate programmers, so why mess with a good thing?
-
Coldplay - Shiver: As slow and droning as everything else by them, but I’ll give it a pass for not being one of their overplayed songs.
Travis - Sing: I prefer “Side” (maybe next time?) but this is still worth a BOS
-
BOS for Travis. Good-sounding band.
-
All we need now is for Train to be played so that the GS community can go absolutely apeshit.
-

IMHO, Sing>Side, but they're both good. Definitely indicative of the era.
-
Afro-Celt Sound System ft. Peter Gabriel - When You’re Falling: We’ve heard this before but it’s quintessential 2001 AAA

AKA the remake of Biko
-
BOS for Spoon. NTM, and much older than I thought they were.
Channeling a little bit of "Reeling in the Years" there.
-
BOS2 Spoon.
Incubus - Drive: Nearly as LN as Cake. DDR’s suggestion “Nice to Know You” would have been much better.
-
Incubus - Drive
This is a new low. The machines are in control.

Yup, even "Wish You Were Here" would've been a tremenously more necessary play. Speaking of which, J-Lo's "Play" would be most welcome.

Ha, I forgot about Play! I agree that would be a good 10@10 song.

My favorite 'remix' of that song was on Rick Dees - "Play my mother's favorite song", LOL
-
REM, Sugarcane (?)
Coincidentally, I'm seeing a few members of REM and their touring band (Mike Mills, Scott McCaughey for sure, maybe Peter Buck) tonight with the Baseball Project.
-
REM, Sugarcane (?)
"Imitation of Life"
What was that clip?
Is this Enya?
-
Enya - Only Time: Not the best choice with only two spaces left but I have to grudgingly give it a pass.

Tell me if you think I'm overstating, but I think this might be the worst 10 at 10 of all time. Other ones I remember getting very negative reviews are Renee's first outing, 1968, and a Giants Opening Day (or world series win?) set.

Wow, incentive to listen to the replay on Soundcloud! ;D

Well, I'm not particularly offended by this one, with at least three songs I've never heard before: Spoon, Enya and this Eyes Wide song. Some boring stuff, but not bad.

While this wasn't great, I think that's overstating things a bit. We did get Travis and lesser-played Coldplay/REM. Plus we avoided Train, but managed to include Spoon.
I think the dishonor for worst set might be a theme set (for the most part those are subpar IMHO anyway).

Is it me or does AL sound a little less engaged than usual during the backsell?

All right, it was probably an overstatement in the heat of the moment. I'll retract it and say instead
That set really, really sucked.

The Outside Lands set?

Agreed; I think it's because she was probably only given one or two songs to choose today, with veto power held over those.

The Outside Lands set?
That would certainly be a contender. Others would include the Giants' 2010 WS championship set, various Ka-Boom offerings, and at least one start-of-summer collection.
I sometimes forget the collective 'meh' that would occur when Dave did a theme set. The presence of "Walking On Sunshine" in a couple of those was what led to the term "Katrina".

I’ll agree. Most of the songs weren’t horrible and only two really bad LN’s (Cake and Incubus), but it was just frustrating because this set could have been much better than it was, and the snoozy factor was a little high. Although the same could be said about many other sets.

3-way tie for BOS: Coldplay, Weezer and REM (per AL).

I'd add that uninspired, generic "dead people" set Renee did last year for Memorial Day.

I'll agree with that one because it was prerecorded as well.

I haven't heard it 750 times yet, so I still really like it. :)

And yet both Dave and Annalisa had some outstanding theme shows. Dave did notably well with
some holiday sets, while Annalisa had some offbeat collections -- I particularly liked her nautical
theme for fleet week. Others have remarked that RR did often better with theme sets.

I suppose one could conclude that the theme sets have the greatest variation in Quality/LNQ!
Certainly, the theme sets more or less fall into two camps:
1) The sets where the host felt passionate, such as the ones you've mentioned...
2) Sets ordered from the bigwigs... I just thought of a couple others in the latter category that didn't work out so well, specifically the Live From The Archives efforts, and to a certain extent, Ka-Boom!
