Title: 5 Aug 2014: it's... 1970
Post by: RGMike on August 04, 2014, 06:36:12 PM
woo hoo!

We have a "Rubber Duckie" request, which I was happy to +1. Given how often AL plays Sesame Street clips, playing "Duckie" shouldn't be much of a stretch.

Meanwhile, people are pissing me off with songs not from 1970, including Janis' "Bobby McGee" -- even if it was '71, why folks request songs so overexposed is beyond me.

Ah, 1970... another opportunity to be disappointed by 10@10.  Of late I've been largely
numbed into silence by the general mediocrity of the shows.  Yes, there have been bright
spots here and there, although far too few.

There's a joke about how convicts/prisoners of war/any group of men otherwise confined
have been together so long that they tell jokes by number only.  I feel that way regarding
our gripes about 10@10.   So in order to save myself a lot of typing...

[general complaint #1]

I don't disagree, tho' I've gotten several requests in the last month so I feel like maybe the new PD isn't as anal as DC was about going off the beaten path . But clearly AL is still required to play several big hits per set.

I will probably miss all or part of this set, so i'll catch up on the replay, probably.

TOTHK - Twister commercial ---> Jackson 5 "The Love You Save"

ETA: I have to go, so I won't be able to post for the rest of this set.  Hopefully someone else can do this!

Yeah, at this rate we'll be done by 10:35 easy.

Neil gets my BOS vote so far. No sign of Ernie or his duckie yet.

Dusty Springfield "A Brand New Me"

holy crap! one from my wish list! (tho'I didn't ask for it today)  Faboo.

And "Ma Belle Amie" (or "Ma Bellamy" as we used to call it) was probably a UK hit in '69, but not in the US until early '70.

I take it we didn't get the Curtis Mayfield?

ETA, OTOH, "The Boxer" actually *is* from '69, that's when the single charted (but it resurfaced on the Bridge Over Troubled Water LP).

AL sez she walked out of the house this am and left half the music she'd meant to bring, along with a large cup of coffee she also seemed to be missing profoundly. :)

although I heard the first 2 on an AT40 Aug 1970 show this weekend, I won't complain since 10@10 can always use more soul. "Apeman" is pretty well-travelled here, as are the Joni and (probably) the Zep. In all, not bad and I look forward to the replay. As dischead noted, it is a year with a gazillion possibilities -- we could've easily gotten 10 bustouts that would not have been obscure in the least. I repeat my contention that New PD Guy is > DC. (but get back to me after we see who he hires for mornings)

Once again, [complaint #8], although as noted we did get some rawk at the end.  Overall though, it was still [complaint #3].

 :)

Dig A Pony was played on the last visit to 1970 on June 5th, and we also got Cecilia from S&G's Bridge... in that
set as well.

Over the past few weeks I've been making notes and accumulating potential tracks... I can assemble a list of ten
artists who had releases in both 1970 and 1971 and create a set of bust-outs from the same ten artists for both
years.  Admittedly, some of these groups -- like Jethro Tull, Chicago, Paul McCartney, The Doors, Joni Mitchell -- are
a bit obscure...

This was my FB request post:

Some big-name bands had some excellent tracks in '70 that don't get a lot of airplay. For example:
The Doors, Waiting for the Sun or Peace Frog/Blue Sunday
Pink Floyd, Fat Old Sun
The Velvet Underground, Oh! Sweet Nuthin'
The Stooges, Down on the Street or Loose or T.V. Eye

I don't do the MyFace thing, so I have no channel for requests.  But yeah, I've noticed that you
seem to have gotten some nods, and there has been a dribble of new material in general.  Of
course, it should be more than a dribble for the stronger years.  Your supposition about the new
PD is probably correct.

It might be more accurate to say that this is AL 3.0; AL 2.0 started in July 2011 with "the change."
