As expected. AL's thread is up early.
It's like Tax Day or Earth Day or Halloween -- some songs you gotta hear. But some new blood would be nice.
-
Village People "San Francisco" -- a fine TOTHK tells the glory(hole) story. BOS1.
-
Tales of the City Michaels' mom coming to visit --> "Take Your Mama Out", Scissor Sisters. BOS2.
-
I'll be listening in my car, so I won't be posting today.
-
Ellen --> "I'm Coming out". Heh. VHM Miss Ross, she da Boss!

In her pre-set chat with Renee, RR asked if it was going to be strictly fun, or if we'd be paying homage to the plight of the gay community, and AL said it was going to be "queer and fun." So I guess that means Sylvester is in, but no "Glad to Be Gay" or songs with any sort of AIDS subtext.
I did enjoy hearing the clip from Tales. Haven't seen that in ages-- might be a good Netflix candidate.

Jerry and George. "Not that there's anything wrong with that" --> Billy Bragg "Sexuality" -- my request! BOS3.
-

I know we've heard the Ellen clip before, but does this count as "new blood"?
-
TV clip about a lesbian kiss (??) --> "Miss Chatelaine", kd lang.
ETA: *that* was the Friends clip, feat Winona Ryder.

I think the Diana Ross tune has made a previous appearance but it's hardly the Pride FF you might expect it to be.

AL said it was going to be "queer and fun."
While AL's sets haven't necessarily been all 'queer', she definitely leans towards 'fun' in her sets (I'm probably forgetting something obvious, but I can't recall any of her 10@10s being overly serious).
-
more Ellen --> "I Was Born This way", the great, forgottten Carl Bean. BOS4
-

I was hoping you'd be able to ID that clip -- I got nothing.
But in the "new blood" column, we seem to be doing well. Both the Billy Bragg and kdl tunes are first-timers, iirc.

Dave, being older, and having had close personal experience with AIDS, tended to be far more political about it, yeah. Either approach works for me.

I could have sworn Dave played this at least once, but it's not in the Shraytabase.
(Btw, I noted that for the 6 Pride sets documented in the Shraytabase, there are only 16 different artists, which tells me Dave def had his favorites and just kept repeating them year after year. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) )

both have made prev appearances. But far from FF territory. And I could never understand why the Carl Bean wasn't on Dave's radar, but AL has played it in all her Pride Sets.
Will & Grace "I'd say *someone's* gay" --> Willie Nelson, "Cowboys are Frequently Secretly Fond of each Other" (or whatever it's called). BOS5
-
"I went to a bar mitzvah once, that doesn't make me Jewish!" --> Blur, "Boys & Girls"

"I went to a bar mitzvah once, that doesn't make me Jewish!" --> Blur, "Boys & Girls"
Was that clip from Friends? The female voice sounded a lot like Lisa Kudrow.
-
NPH "Theater's not just for gays anymore" --> "Wig in a Box from Hedwig. Nice segue.
-

it was her, but from the movie The Opposite of Sex, iirc.
-
NPH "Theater's not just for gays anymore" --> "Wig in a Box from Hedwig. Nice segue.
I think this is the Polyphonic Spree cover of "Wig", from the Hedwig tribute record of the same name.
-
Harvey Milk --> Sylvester, a necessary FF.

I think this is the Polyphonvic Spree cover of "Wig", from the Hedwig tribute record of the same name.
By the way, I wish AL would visit the Hedwig soundtrack more often. We've heard Wig several times, but I think she could easily drop a few of the other songs into various theme sets -- Midnight Radio, perhaps, or Wicked Little Town?

Shows what I know. GtbG makes a token appearance leading into the backsell, but just a couple of lines of the chorus so we don't have to hear about any gay-bashing. Nice to hear in any case.
-
Renee's set from last year:
1. George Michael - Freedom '90
2. Timbuk3 - Leagalize Our Love
3. Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule
4. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Same Love
5. Joe Jackson - Real Men
6. Madonna - Vogue
7. Erasure - A Little Respect
8. Rufus Wainwright - One Man Guy
9. Tom Robinson Band - Glad To Be Gay
10. Lady Gaga - Born This Way
I remember thinking it was pretty impressive, for her, and I stand by that.

I missed the set, it seems like the usual suspects. I know Hedwig's Wig In A Box gets trotted out for this quite often, but don't we always heard the Polyphonic Spree version? Why not the original film recording or the bway recording or whatever?
