Title: 23 June 2014: it's... 1974
Post by: RGMike on June 22, 2014, 04:34:44 PM
Haven't heard the promo myself, but someone in 'snipes said it indicated "the year of Blazing Saddles". Interestingly, we just did '74 three weeks ago, and that doesn't happen often these days given how many years are on "the big wheel".

ETA: '74 confirmed. Heard the promo this morning. There was no suggestions thread; I'm wondering if this is a "classic", perhaps (long weekend for AL?).

Supertramp's "Dreamer" feels like a rarity in this company.  VHM.

San Francisco reacts to Nixon's resignation --> "Out of the Blue", Roxy Music

One of those pleasant but hardly earth-shattering sets. Fine for a Monday.

I would agree with RGM's assessment that while this set is pleasant enough, it's not revolutionary.

I will say, however, that AWB's "Work To Do" is a serious rarity -- only one previous play by AL in 2011 and not in the Shraytabase at all.

Phillippe Petit --> "Lamb Lies Down on B'way"

For those who haven't seen it, Man On Wire is an excellent documentary about Petit's
accomplishment.  The film works well both as a recounting of the events leading up to his
wire walk and in evoking the experience of participating in its staging.  Interesting fact: Petit
knew he wanted to walk between the towers from the moment he first read the announcement
of the World Trade Center project -- years before the buildings were constructed.

Caught up with this one earlier today (I was illin' yesterday, spent the day pretty much flat on my back). I'd call it more than pleasant--the AWB tune would get my BOS overall, but there's really nothing here I would call overplayed, either. Most I hear within the 10@10 framework once or twice a year, and that's infrequent enough to be pretty damn enjoyable. Good clips, too, particularly the Blazing Saddles stuff.

Now if you'll pardon me, I'm gonna WHIP THIS OUT...

ETA: Actually the biggest FF in this set was the Nixon resignation reaction piece that preceded the Roxy Music. Dave used to play that one a bunch, and I think RR used it more than a few times, too, in addition to AL.

It is the only time in U.S. history a president has resigned.

A significant enough event that one would think there would be other clips out there to draw from. I agree that his resignation defined 1974, not to mention the first half of the decade.
