Title: 4 June 2014: it's... 2003 (!)
Post by: RGMike on June 04, 2014, 07:45:52 AM
AL clearly too busy celebrating her B-day to post clues, and who can blame her? We're overdue for '90s, so that's my guess today.

wow, I'm rather gobsmacked.

TOTHK: Jack "I hate the Black Keys" White & Co, "7 Nation Army"

I'm gonna predict that the rest of the week brings 1970 and a mid-'90s year.

Now his show probably hasn't lost much over time, unlike certain other (RS) oldies acts.

I would have to think so. I remember "One Horse Town" being in heavy KFOG rotation.

Appears to be. This song annoyed me when it was out, so WOS. "One Horse Town" cleverly got a spin on the Chinese New Year 10@10.

WOS2 No Doubt's utterly unnecessary cover of "It's My Life"

Still sneaking in older songs on later 10@10's. There were some oldies sung at karaoke in Lost in Translation . . .

ETA: second straight cover, Dixie Chicks with Landslide

News: Baghdad prepares for US invasion/Dixie Chicks controversy --> their cover of "Landslide"  VHM -- I ceratinly prefer theirs to Smashing Pumpkins.

This cover always seems to preempt better originals by the covering bands.

This would be a perfect entry for a "generally unremarkable songs known for other reasons" 10@10.

VHM to "United States Of Forever".

And I'm happy for the lack of "Hey Ya", which is the 2003 version of "Diggin' Your Scene" (per RGM's definition, a song that a station will play to death to show how cool they are".

another short set.

The main bass riff sounds a lot like a snippet of L.A. Woman.

Once again, a visit to a year that could have been exceedingly cringe-worthy, yet she pulled out a number of songs that don't fall into the overplayed/unnecessary category in my book: Radiohead, Dixie Chicks, No Doubt, Jayhawks, Thrills, Aqualung. And yeah, White Stripes, which is the antithesis of those songs. My BOS vote: Radiohead & Jayhawks.

AL did a "spin" for the second show in a row.  Will she be doing that from now on?

It really did feel like the opening was somehow "naked' without it.  Dunno why it took so long to bring it back. (And technically it's not the "big wheel" it's the beep-boop-boop from the Daily Show's "The Week in God").
