hope I get to listen on the plane... and hope it's better than that rather snoozy instru set RR did a few months back.

TOTHK - Link Wray & His Ray Men "Rumble"
-
Strong start with Rumble. I can almost understand why this might have been banned at the time it came out -- it sounds kinda dangerous. And certainly nothing sounded like it before.
-
What was #2?
ETA: Pixies "Cecilia Ann" (thanks, urth!)
Booker T. & The MG's "Green Onions" is song number 3.
ETA: This was played in the previous Wordless Wednesday set.
-
What was #2?
Not a clue, although it sounded like it could have been a contemporary of the Link Wray tune. Meant to Soundhound it but it was over before I had a chance.
Green Onions is a fine song, but it comes in pretty high on the LN scale.
ETA: This was played in the previous Wordless Wednesday set.
Which just accentuates its LN-ness.

Billy Preston "Outa-Space"

VHM Outa-Space.
More fun with a clavinet.

Dave Brubeck Quartet "Take Five"

Dave Brubeck "Take Five"
Nice... BOS
-
Dave Brubeck Quartet "Take Five"
Carpal tunnel piano, but drums and sax are brilliant!
Makes me think of Spinal Tap's "Jazz Odyssey!"

Dave Brubeck Quartet "Take Five"

Serious BOS contender. Timeless. (Although not a bustout. Dave played it in at least one Strictly Instrumental set.)
-
Santana "Samba Pa Ti"

Santana
I was hoping for Europa...

Had a strong feeling we'd hear either Europa or this (Samba Pa Ti).

Ha!!
I was JUST wondering whether either Jessica (this one) or In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (sp?) would be played... Overplayed maybe, but still sounds great to me.

I'd love to hear Elizabeth Reed. I wonder if it's ever been played.

Jeff Beck next? Probably "Cause We've Ended as Lovers?" Or, maybe "Freeway Jam?"
ETA: To be clear, I'm predicting. Jessica is still playing.
-
What was #2?
Per the GS thread, the second song was the Pixies, Cecilia Ann. Never heard it before, likely a bustout.
-
OMFG Herbie Hancock "Rockit"
RGMike, this one's for you!
ETA: I should have requested Paul Hardcastle's "19"

Dave didn't play it within the scope of the Shraytabase, but I'd guess he must have at some time in the 20 years prior.

Wiggy wiggy wooot!
Saw Herbie at the Fillmore around 05 or 06, iirc. He played this to end the show, brought down the house.

Beck's Bolero

Ok, so it's Beck's Bolero instead.
BOS, ABB.

Here's your Beck tune, but from a much earlier part of his career (well, 6 or 7 years anyway, which was eons in that time). BOS Beck's Bolero.
-
What's the tune AL is playing in the backsell? I missed her ID...
ETA: and the Beastie Boys after the backsell...
-
What's the tune AL is playing in the backsell? I missed her ID...
Miles Davis, Move On. (You can thank the delay in the stream. I saw your question a minute or so before she cued the track.)

Playing "Whammer Jammer" for myself right now. Need a little harmonica instrumental dessert.

4/30/14 Wordless Wednesday
1. Link Wray - Rumble
2. The Pixies - Cecelia Ann
3. Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions
4. Billy Preston - Outta Space
5. Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five
6. Santana - Samba Pa Ti
7. Jefferson Airplane - Embryonic Journey
8. The Allman Brothers Band - Jessica
9. Herbie Hancock - Rockit
10. Jeff Beck Group - Beck's Bolero
Good thing Mike was on a plane this morning. I suspect this would have elicited much complaining from his corner, save for the Herbie.
-
AL on FB says Dave Brubeck got BOS.

An instrumental set needs a lot of familiar tunes, or else the DJ is going to lose the entire audience save the diehards. So I completely sympathize with AL here.
-
I thought the transition from Jessica to Rockit was a little abrupt, but otherwise this was
a pretty good set. Green Onions and perhaps Jessica were the closest things to frequent
flyers, and even they haven't appeared that many times on 10@10. As for LN status, I'll
leave that for someone else to determine. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was played
in the first Wordless Wednesday set on 19-Aug-09.

Really? How is that any different from songs with lyrics? If listeners are going to lose interest
because of unfamiliar material, it seems to me it doesn't matter if it's instrumental or not. For
myself, if a song grabs me with the quality of the music, I'm going to listen regardless of whether
I've heard it before.

I think words are a hook for the non-diehard. You are a diehard, so yes, you could stomach the unfamiliar.

Well, I am a die-hard 10@10 fan, so I will listen to an entire show, good or bad... but most of
the music of the late '90s and beyond is unfamiliar to me. I find much of it undistinguished,
and it goes in one ear and out the other. If I wasn't purposefully listening to 10@10, I'd
probably change the station. The lyrics might hook me (if I can even understand them),
but if they don't... for myself, I don't see much difference between that and instrumentals.
In one case the lyrics might hook you if the music doesn't, but that's not a given.
