Irish Greg spilled the beans this morning -- they're going all-out for the Prince concert; "Throwback Thursday" will include Prince songs all day and then AL will do a Prince 10@10 on Friday.
-
Given that AL played "When Doves Cry" last week in an '84 set... here's hoping we can avoid hearing it again. Certainly plenty of other great stuff to choose from.
ETA: and lo, AL has a request thread up! I requested 3 '90s tracks that I've asked for multiple times w/out success (Cream, Thieves in the Temple and Money Don't Matter 2 Nite) -- if I can't get one played in an all-Prince set then I give up.
-
Dearly Beloved... I coulda guessed this would be our TOTHK.
-
Is it that amazing that Prince is doing a concert? I mean, it's not like he died. There better be some serious rarities or this is really pointless.

Everyone's favorite car/vagina metaphor.

Maybe AL can dig up a recording of Prince doing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". That would be awesome. But probably not.

I call this "pandering to the target demo". Guess the Weiland/Bowie sets saw a ratings spike.

Are those clips from SNL? Who's doing the Prince voice?
-
"shirts against blouses" --> "I Would Die 4 U"
we're firmly in early-'80s hit territory so far, sadly.

Dave Chapelle's show -- his Prince imitation was a big deal at the time.
-
more Chappelle --> OMG, "Baby I'm a Star"! a bustout?
ETA: yes, appears to be

and we're back to the hits with "1999".

A welcome NTM choice! The organ sound reminds me of another particular song, but I'm having trouble placing it. Possibly The Bird by Morris Day and the Time.
-
Jeebus, just track the whole Purple Rain sndtk... ("Take Me With U")

def in that bag, as it's from Purple Rain.
-
Sorry Don, "Take Me with You" isn't great.
-
another hit: "Kiss"
-
Who was that on Jimmy Fallon? Queen Latifah?
Hoping for "Erotic City" before it's too late.
-
BOS2 "Darling Nikki"!!! Another welcome bustout. Grind, baby grind.
-
There are probably more Purple Rain songs in this set than he'll play in his entire show tonight.

Exactly. Talk about '80s-centric: nothing from before '82 and nothing from after '86. with one slot left to fill.
-
Purple Rain trailer --> (surprise!) "Purple Rain".
wow this was (except for the 2 bustouts) kinda ridiculous.

Except one of them was an interview with a woman on Jimmy Fallon's show, I think. Do you know who that was?
Never mind -- got it right. :)

OK, so the Purple Rain album has 9 songs on it. We heard 6 of them. We also heard all three of the songs from side one of 1999. And we heard Kiss. That's it, musicwise. Not a terribly deep set by anyone's yardstick, Darling Nikki notwithstanding.
