I was astounded that she's only 57 (even tho' I shoulda known that).  Of course she was 16 when "Society's Child" hit...

Al Stewart (http://www.alstewart.com/) released a new record yesterday.  Yes, he's been way under chart radar for a long time, now.  Most people will recognize a few of his songs (The Year Of The Cat and Time Passages, mainly), but he's been cranking out the well-crafted songs ever since the late 60s.  A good number of them deal with historical figures (http://www.alstewart.com/history/00_histmenu.htm) (Warren Harding, Lord Grenville, etc.) so he's educational as well as fun!

I saw him at the Sausalito Arts fest a couple weeks back, and he'll be at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on Dec 12.  Rock on, softly!

Glad to hear he's still working. His pre-"Cat" stuff ("Roads to Moscow", "Nostradamus") was very big on NYC prog FM and is some of the smartest music of that period. I was happy when he broke thru but unfortunately with commercial success comes a certain backlash, and radio lost interest after "Time Passages".

Joan Baez back on chart after 29 years
It's been 29 years since Joan Baez last appeared on the U.S. pop album chart, but her long hiatus ended this week when the folk singer's first album in five years debuted at No. 128.

So her last album, the one KFOG was playing a year or 2 ago, didn't chart? Hrm.

There's an older album KPIG plays the title track a lot called "Play Me Backwards" I really like.  I don't know if it charted either.

In case you were wondering whatever became of Robbie Nevil, he's one of the songwriters for High School Musical 3 !!  From the NYTimes review:

Quote
The best of the score’s several songwriters are the team of Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, whose auto junkyard anthem, “The Boys Are Back,” echoes Thin Lizzy’s 1976 hit “The Boys Are Back in Town” filtered through Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” and is frenziedly performed by a male chorus executing post-break-dance acrobatics on the hoods of rusted cars. The genre, which might be described as sugarcoated bubblegum hip-hop, may be disposable, but it is extremely catchy and rhythmically elastic.

Given his vaguely homophobic remarks about Brokeback Mountain a few years back (when he and Ernest Borgnine became poster-boys for H'wood's glueless-geezer contingent), I hope there's a question-and-answer session at that event, and I hope someone asks about that.

Oh my.

OK, he's a couple months past 59, so he's no youngster, but he'd look a helluva lot younger if he lost the white beard, and reined in the dreads a bit.

What's the big deal?  He can look as old as he wants, right?  What is the hang up in this country with appearing young?

Of course. It's his choice, and he's chosen a Rasta-Kenny Rogers motif.  I've got plenty of salt in my once-peppery goatee.  But the contrast is striking, that was my point.

All right then... maybe I'm just being too sensitive since I'm all salt these days.  Or maybe salt and white pepper.  :P

You might find it fun to know that Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock was at my work the other day, the veterinary hospital, an emergency with her dog.  The name looked familiar, so I did a quick Google search and confirmed it from her photo and it says she lives in SF.  More:

Here's another "where are they now" feature from Spin. Justine Frischmann (ex-Elastica) is now a painter in San Rafael--who knew?!?

http://www.spin.com/gallery/spins-where-are-they-now?page=1#main

I like this one better than the Comcast one as it actually tells what all of the artists are doing now. The Comcast piece disregards its "where are they now" premise and provides precious little current info, with a few lame album covers as art.

Well, that's Comcast for ya -- they come up as my home page since I got their hi-speed 'net, and I clicked the link.  But meanwhile 30 Rock wasted no time satirizing them (and their acquisition of NBC) in last week's episode -- they call them "KableTown".

50 years ago today Chubby Checker's "The Twist" was released (first performed at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, NJ).  It became a worldwide dance craze and the only record to hit #1 in two separate years ('60 and '62).  He performed it today at Philadelphia City Hall with 1,000 others:

Yesterday, 7/26, for the first time onstage in almost 12 years, prog rockers Emerson, Lake & Palmer -namely vocalist/bassist Greg Lake, keyboardist Keith Emerson and drummer Carl Palmer- reunited for a one-off 40th anniv concert, headlining the High Voltage Festival in Victoria Park, London. Here's video evidence of that reunion, fan-filmed footage of "Karn Evil 9" originally from ELP's 1973 album 'Brain Salad Surgery' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNBbL9gKpsA

Interesting!  Sonia Dada also resonates in the current Hot 100: country artist Jarrod Niemann covered one of their songs ("Lover, You Don't Treat Me Good No More"), retitled it "Lover, Lover," and crossed over into the Top 40 with it.  It's still on the charts now.

I'll have to seek that out -- I've always thought there are lots of songs that could be countrified and become big C&W hits, but the Nashville songwriting community is rather cliquish and they don't cotton to covers of pop tunes, especially as singles. It happens, but not as often as it oughta. That first Sonia Dada album was *huge* on KFOG at the time and a personal fave of mine.

I can see Niemann making your year-end best-of, if you keep such things.  The Nashville insularity is an unfortunate thing, I totally agree.
