Title: CG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 5/12/08
Post by: urth on May 12, 2008, 11:58:15 AM
The 'Poo stream is again behaving quite well--so far.

Heard Sharon Jones earlier, now we're getting a cover of The Shadow of Your Smile that I'm not sure if it's a woman or Stevie Wonder.

ETA: OK, we just heard a harmonica solo, and he's really belting it out now--it's Stevie for sure. When he was singing in a more restrained style on the early verses, it coulda been a woman.

Did I miss it, or was there no handoff from Marilynn to Judge "pleasuring your earhole" this morning? I have yet to hear a live announcer on here.

I'm listening to Greg's Friday CGSS since I missed large chunks of it. Let me know if Judge actually shows up.

You might wanna check this out--it's been pretty good so far. They're playing a Sly Stone track right now (Remember Who You Are?) that I'm not recognizing. Oops, just segued into something else, but it all seems to be 70s-era soul.

here's Jim Gilstrap's delightful "Swing Your Daddy", a big UK hit in 1975 but only a mid-charter here. If you're saying "Jim WHO?", he's the guy who sang the opening lines of Stevie's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life".

Just convinced myself I wasn't imagining it--they've been playing just portions of the last several songs, but doing some nice segues between them. This definitely doesn't sound like Judge.

methinks you are correct -- The Dan's "Black Cow" popped up for a few seconds!

They just had a live station ID, but all he read were the call letters and frequency, and then back into the music. And that was the first break since noon, when there was a canned ID. Oh, and it definitely wasn't Judge.

ETA: Man, I wish I had a buck for every song we've heard a piece of since the top of the hour. Must be up around 30-plus now. I could go get myself a really nice lunch. :)

Just heard the intro to Player's Baby Come Back, but he segued into something else as the vocals were about to kick in.

Oh, and I must give props to KPOO for the improved stream quality--nary a dropout or a buffering episode since I tuned in almost 90 minutes ago.

"a vintage session with DJ TD Camp" -- was that by way of introduction?  I'm wondering if this is on tape or if someone is mixing live?

we got all of Masakela's "Grazin in the Grass", then into Sly "If You want Me to Stay". Nice.

followed by more trumpet: Herb Alpert's "Rise". wha-wha-wha-wha-whaaaaaaaaa...

I think you might have hit on it.

Bummed to have missed the Masekela/Sly duo. Couldn't put off lunch any longer.

And the buffering issues have returned. So I retract my props.

dunno if you caught that plug for hellarecords.com... but on that website, DJ TD Camp is selling his CDs -- looks like that's what we've been listening to!

Smart marketing!

PS: Jim Gilstrap also sang on the "Good Times" theme.

Ain't we happy we got him? Gil-STRAP!

For years I saw his name in Whitburn, etc, and -- knowing nothing about him -- assumed that, with a name like Jim Gilstrap, he must be a white country singer...

Someone new to me is subbing for Dean on his CG request show -- but the listeners are the star, and one of 'em requested "Mary's Prayer", to my delight.

Dean's sub tonite is named Murray Jay -- I keep picturing the manager on "Flight of the Conchords"

new to me: Gary Moore (feat Phil Lynott on vocals), "Parisienne Walkways", a top ten UK hit from '79.

OMFG2! Cher, "Ah Fayound Someone".  If Dave can play godawful power ballads by Cheap Trick and Heart, he can surely give this one an occasional spin.

Billy Fury with the UK hit of "Halfway to Paradise" (Tony Orlando had the US version). But here's Nick Lowe's fab cover from the late '70s:

Another to go with "Rock Me Gently" and "Don't Push I Don't Force It" -- Hot Chocolate's bluntly titled "Put Your Love in Me". (!)

I've been making Vin Scelsa's WFUV edition of Idiot's Delight part of my weekly listening habits for the last month or so, and the one for last weekend is all over the map but particularly satisfying. It's just getting close to wrapping up now, with Mink DeVille's Venus of Avenue D.

[One annoying thing about the FUV archive stream is that you can't move it back or ahead to listen to a particular part of the show. You have to start at the beginning, and listen all the way thru if you want to hear something at the end. At least you can pause it, but jeez.]

indeed... same prob with CG -- was listening to the Saturday CGSS (a 6 hour show) and their stream died 2 hours in. To reconnect would've meant listening to the first 2 hours again.  Greg says they're working on posting it in 2-hour pieces, but so far no luck.

So I switched to WLNG and got this trifecta:

Tom Jones "Love Me Tonite"
Dennis Coffey, "Scorpio"
Irish Rovers, "The Unicorn" (and it ain't even St Patty's Day!)

Just listened to it on YouTube, thanks!  Nice melody, but the vocals would have been better in the hands of Sagittarius or Spany & Our Gang.  Or even the Peppermint Rainbow.

digging another CGSS podcast -- a couple rarities: James & Bobby Purify (of "I'm Your Puppet" fame) doing a bang-up cover of "Shake a Tailfeather", followed by the Tymes fab soulful version of La Streisand's "People".

another rarity: Edwin Starr's "Headline News", which isn't even on those "Hard to Find Motown" comps, even tho' his other pre-Motown stuff (like "S.O.S.") is.
