on VIP: Gloria Jones orig of "Tainted Love".
bonus: VIP's player now has a "now playing" feature, for identifying the many obscurities they play, especially the stuff the Brits call Northern Soul. Right now: "TLC": by PJ -- a new one on me.
-
a pre-Motown Edwin Starr, "Agent Double-O-Soul"!
-
when I think about those nights in Montreal...
Gino! don't ever "...Stop".
-
OMGWTF! Lulu, "Oh Me Oh My". It must be the white folks hour
(we heard Bobby Caldwell too.)
-
OMGWTFLOL! Dusk, "I Hear Those Church Bells Ringing" -- a girl-group throwback from '71 or '72 that I thought I'd never hear again. A minor hit in the US and totally fab. They were on Bell records -- the label already had Dawn so they figured they should have a group called Dusk too...
If I'd heard this last week, I'd've looked for it at Village Music yesterday.
-
now it's a Jamaican-sounding woman (no idea; the "now playing" feature stopped working) doing "Police and Thieves".
-
VIP RULES!
Isleys, "Behind a Painted Smile". Fab. Yoo. Luss.
-
Miss Roberta!
"strollin' in the park/
watchin' Donny fall off the ledge..."
-

Hey!
I wish Nina Simone had covered that RF song. Didn't recognize the "Masquerade" thing that preceded it, but it was a fun one.

First time you heard that Isleys tune? One from their brief stay at Motown, and one of my favorite obscurities.
-
Cher?
-
yikes! Robbie Dupree, "Steal Away". Does this count as Yacht Rock? or is it Imitation Yacht Rock?
-
This song playing now -- "They'll Never Know Why I Love You"? -- is knocking my ass off! Sounds like the Grass Roots with the Four Tops on backing vox!
-
Oh My! Jackie Ross, "Selfish One. A lost gem.

CG giving up some Duran Duran, Rio.

Whee! First Choice are Armed and Extremely Dangerous!

I always wondered if he was the same guy from Honey Cone's "Stick Up".

"I'm a contented Pusherman!"
-
The underrated "Everything Your Heart Desires," which I think ended a long streak of Top 10 hits for H&O.

Indeed -- I haven't heard this since it charted. Nice.
-
this "what can i do what can i say" song sounds familiar, but not this version. I'm blanking on where or when I've heard it before.

goddamn the contented pusherman.
OMG! R. Dean Taylor, "Ghost in My House"!
-
Yah Mo' Be There! James Ingram (the black Michael MacDonald) and Michael McDonald (the white James Ingram).
-
I love the "Broadcasting from LONDON! LOS ANGELES! and... SHEFFIELD!" promos. Sorta like saying New York, Paris and... East Stoudsburg.
and here's Gladys, "Taste of Bitter Love". Tell him to drink pineapple juice, honey. It'll make it taste a lot sweeter
-
Totally unexpected, but welcome: Carly Simon's "Comin' Around Again", the song she SHOULD have won an Oscar for.
-
OMG! R. Dean Taylor, "Ghost in My House"!
Dammit, I missed it! Played during laundry time, I guess.
But at least I returned in time for Carly's "Coming Around Again," which I probably haven't heard since 1990.
-

Pineapple juice, eh? I've heard that chocolate and Corona are both rather beneficial. Always looking for suggestions.
-
Ahhh - Sister Sledge's "Thinking of You," which was gorgeously covered by Paul Weller not very long ago.

Corona? as opposed to any other beer? Beer's already bitter. Bitter + Bitter = Sweet?

and shame on US radio for ignoring it. KFOG played it, like, once.

SHE'S BUILT!
OHHH,
SHE'S STACKED!!!
-
SHE'S BUILT!
OHHH,
SHE'S STACKED!!!
I daresay she's not unlike a dwelling made of bricks.
-
YES! One of my 20 favorite songs of all time, Culture Club's "Time (Clock of the Heart)." I get weepy just hearing it.
-
The Boy hisself! "Time (Clock of the Heart)". This station is just heavenly.
-
uh-oh, coulda done without Whitney's version of "I'm Every Crackwhore".
-
uh-oh, coulda done without Whitney's version of "I'm Every Crackwhore".
SHA-KHAN!
-
"Hold On To My Love", Jimmy Ruffin's fine (if brief) comeback.
-
Miss Ross (da Boss) with her agreeably cheezy remake of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"
Followed by Womack & Womack, "Love Wars"!
and then Miss Candi Staten Island's cover of "Suspicious Minds"!!
This has been the best afternoon of music in ages. I (almost) hate to go home.
-
Cool So much I don't know. I'll be tuning in tomorrow.
-
another day of VIP treatment!
Otis, "Mr Pitiful"! Lawd ha'mercy!
followed by Sly's "M'Lady", which I haven't heard in yonks.
-
VIP Teddy. mmmmm mmmmmm good.
Don't leave me this way........
I reiterate, mmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmm

I just KNEW you'd be happy.
But -- OMGWTF! -- it's the Osmonds, "One Bad Apple", the very antithesis of Soul. But a delight to hear nonetheless. Screetch it, Donny!
-
Yikes, I forgot it was the Osmonds. I thought it was little MJ. A young Jonathan Edwards?
-
Mr McDonald covering Stevie's "All in Love is Fair". Well, he's doing a better job than Streisand did.
-
Hoo Lawd! Barbara Acklin's fabulous "Love Makes a Woman".
-
'LNG-ing for the first time in a week, and lo -- it's Andy Gibb's "I Just Wanna Be Your Everything".
-
another 'LNG gem: The 4 Seasons' fine late-'60s remake of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"
-
VIP Teddy. mmmmm mmmmmm good.
Don't leave me this way........
I reiterate, mmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmm
Al, picturing your avatar singing this was a moment of pure delight.
As for "M'Lady," I want to hear Big & Rich cover it, maybe with Cowboy Troy dropping some rhymes in the middle.

Cowboy Troy and Wynonna are co-hosting the next edition of USA Networks' country Idol clone, "Nashville Star". Did anybody actually buy Troy's album? Did any country radio stations play it? He makes Charley Pride look like Eldridge Cleaver.
-

No and no.
-
ooooohhhh Teddy again. CG delivers
PLEASE, Don't Leave Me This Way.
Don't you understand? I'm at your command.
-
another one we heard on VIP this week: Isleys, "Behind a Painted Smile". DAY-um! that's fine.
-
I haven't heard this in ages.
-
... do it, do it, do it till you're satisfied.
-
tuning into cg just in time to hear mister mayfield "move on up!"
-
what the heck is this after mayfield ("i thought it was you")? sounds like boz scaggs, zapp, and cameo in a broadway streetfight.
-

"Broadway Streetfight" will be the name of my new band.

It was Amii Stewart -- or as Greg put it, "back when she was trying to sound like Sylvester". LOL!
-
"I don' wanna be a freak -- but ah can't HELP mahself!"
-
Oops. Up. Side. Yo'head!
-
ooo! Don Covay, the orig of "See Saw"!
-
Gladys, tastin' that bitter love again -- either Greg's been listening to VIP or vice-versa.
-
switched over to 'LNG in time for the Partridges, "I Think I Love You". This is even better than hearing "One Bad Apple" yesterday.
-
OMG! Gilbert O'Sullivan, "Out of the Question" -- haven't heard this since the '70s.
-
VIP Radio has been terrific this Saturday night as I catch up on correspondence and Photoshopping stuff. Mike, you'll want to know: When they go "live" (I guess they consider the present a beta test?), they'll be running a weekend program dedicated to Carolina Beach music.
And now: "Hang On In There Baby."
-

Yes, I'm quite excited about that. I think the launch date for "live" transmissions is March 15th?
-
Listening to JJ's '70s Soul Jamz on KPOO -- just heard the "other" version of "Soul Makossa" by Afrique, which lost the cover battle to Manu Dibango's version. Quite similar actually.
And here's George McCrae's follow-up to "Rock Your Baby", "I Can't Leave You Alone", which I've never heard before. Another Casey/Finch composition.
