Title: 1 Aug 2007: "an amazing set" sez Dave (1981)
Post by: RGMike on August 01, 2007, 09:58:27 AM
we'll be the judge o'that.  And '81 can go either way.

Hey, how 'bout a "Bourne Ultimatum" set for Friday?

Bourne to Run
Bourne to Be Alive
Bourne to Be Wild
Bourne in the USA...

Indeed, and lesser Moodies (sorry, Mark) are not an auspicious beginning.

Followed by TP & the HBs, The Waiting. Both songs scream "summer of 81" in my consciousness--wonder if we'll hear anything from Face Dances? Or El Rayo-X? Or the Pretenders "Extended Play" EP? All of those have the same effect.

Is that what this is? Never heard it before--but it sounds like it'd be perfect for a Tax Day set.

A matter of taste -- they've certainly got much better songs in the catalog. But I don't hate it, and it ain't a Katrina (yet).

a few rarely heard tunes that would make it for me:

Undertones "It's Going to Happen"
Michael Stanley Band   "He Can't Love You"
and/or
anything other than "Our Lips Are Sealed" off of Beauty & The Beat
anything other than "The Magnificent 7" off of Sandinista
Title: Death of Sadat

followed by Lunatic Fringe

good segue

The same is true for the Go-Go's.  Awesome debut album, and imho, holds up exceptionally well compared to much from that year.

For me, in '81, this sounded like a cheap ripoff of Floyd/The Wall, especially in a rock radio landscape filled with many many New Wave goodies.

for those not listening in Chicago yesterday (with BIS scores):

The Who - You Better You Bet   15.3%
Stevie Nicks - The Edge of 17   11.1%
The Police - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic   10.6%
Billy Squire - In the Dark   9.4%
The Cars - Shake it Up   3.0%
Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe   8.9%
Blue Oyster Cult - Burning For You   6.0%
Foreigner - Waiting For a Girl Like You   18.3%
Styx - Too Much Time on My Hands   6.8%
Santana - Winning   10.6%

If Dave repeats tunes 2, 5, 8, 9 or 10 I'll scream.

Now see, this is the opposite of "Lunatic Fringe" for me -- a song that fairly leapt off the radio in '81, and got played even on black stations, which was kind of a big deal at the time. It seemed to be everywhere you went.

well, it ain't "Shake it Up", but it's the Cars nonetheless: WOS2 "Since You've Gone".

WOS Cars.

Okay, I'm officially BUMMED OUT.  Could anything be worse than missing Ginger's fab 1971 set in favor of having your tooth drilled down to the gums, and then being told that if you don't come back soon for a crown ($645 out-of-pocket) on another tooth you're looking at a root canal?

And now I'm listening to Dave's false-advertising, less-than amazing 1981 set as the novacaine wears off.  Cosby was right - Novacaine doesn't kill pain, it just postpones it.

Rhyming "mess" with "treacherous"--not good songcraft.

Now I know you'll be in SJ on Friday, so this is mostly just for our own amusement, but WTF, maybe you'll think this is a cool idea.  I mean, when else is the idea even possible?

At minimum I hope it's worth a grin.

Best,
