we'll be the judge o'that. And '81 can go either way.
Hey, how 'bout a "Bourne Ultimatum" set for Friday?
Bourne to Run
Bourne to Be Alive
Bourne to Be Wild
Bourne in the USA...
-
1981, eh? OK, Dave--it's put-up-or-shut-up time.

Indeed, and lesser Moodies (sorry, Mark) are not an auspicious beginning.
-
The Waiting (for a bustout) is the hardest part.

Followed by TP & the HBs, The Waiting. Both songs scream "summer of 81" in my consciousness--wonder if we'll hear anything from Face Dances? Or El Rayo-X? Or the Pretenders "Extended Play" EP? All of those have the same effect.

LOL! that's the perfect comment!
-
BOS Stones -- Mick don't need the aggro. Saywhutdehell!
-
how's withers for a bustout?

hey maybe we'll get "Shaddupyouface", Joe Dolce was '81, right?
-
how's withers for a bustout?
Is that what this is? Never heard it before--but it sounds like it'd be perfect for a Tax Day set.
-
how's withers for a bustout?
DAY-UM! this is the bustout of the week for me -- I have never heard this before. And I'm LOVIN' the lyrics. BOS2

Too bad it's followed up with third-rate Tubes. WOS A Matter of Time.

A matter of taste -- they've certainly got much better songs in the catalog. But I don't hate it, and it ain't a Katrina (yet).
-
Lunatic Fringe for the 2nd time this week. That's just wack.
-
a few rarely heard tunes that would make it for me:
Undertones "It's Going to Happen"
Michael Stanley Band "He Can't Love You"
and/or
anything other than "Our Lips Are Sealed" off of Beauty & The Beat
anything other than "The Magnificent 7" off of Sandinista
-
followed by Lunatic Fringe
good segue
-

I'll give it a BOS #2, after the nifty bustout.

i'm imagining henley singing it. just for fun.

OMG yes... An LP chock full of great songs (many of which got signif airplay in '81) that Dave ignores. "Hitsville UK" would make my week.
-
Dave 'finds his way back' to the Katrina bin.
-
AAAAAAACK! WOS "Find Your Way Back" to the janeyjaneyjane with the hungry eyes.
-
Another bay area band in decline: WOS2, Starship.

The same is true for the Go-Go's. Awesome debut album, and imho, holds up exceptionally well compared to much from that year.

this is being sung by eric carmen in my head. fun with katrinas and wos!

For me, in '81, this sounded like a cheap ripoff of Floyd/The Wall, especially in a rock radio landscape filled with many many New Wave goodies.

methinks this pretty much equalizes the Wither bustout. Dave better have more in store if this is to be an amazing set.
-
another repeat from Bob's set? You bet!
-
another repeat from Bob's set? You bet!
for those not listening in Chicago yesterday (with BIS scores):
The Who - You Better You Bet 15.3%
Stevie Nicks - The Edge of 17 11.1%
The Police - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic 10.6%
Billy Squire - In the Dark 9.4%
The Cars - Shake it Up 3.0%
Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe 8.9%
Blue Oyster Cult - Burning For You 6.0%
Foreigner - Waiting For a Girl Like You 18.3%
Styx - Too Much Time on My Hands 6.8%
Santana - Winning 10.6%
If Dave repeats tunes 2, 5, 8, 9 or 10 I'll scream.
-
sweet relief! h&o
-
sweet relief! h&o
I'll spot them a VHM, but Dave played this song only a couple months ago.
-
smooth stylin' indeed
I can go for "I Can't Go For That!"
-

I'll spot them a VHM, but Dave played this song only a couple months ago.
I'll concur--also, they have better songs in their catalog.
-
I'll BOS3 H&O, since we almost had 'em yesterday. Great almost-black artists!
-
Well, it's not Shake It Up, but I can't say Since You've Gone is an improvement.

Now see, this is the opposite of "Lunatic Fringe" for me -- a song that fairly leapt off the radio in '81, and got played even on black stations, which was kind of a big deal at the time. It seemed to be everywhere you went.
well, it ain't "Shake it Up", but it's the Cars nonetheless: WOS2 "Since You've Gone".
-

jinx, you two.
i *hate* the cars!!!!
-
WOS Cars.
Okay, I'm officially BUMMED OUT. Could anything be worse than missing Ginger's fab 1971 set in favor of having your tooth drilled down to the gums, and then being told that if you don't come back soon for a crown ($645 out-of-pocket) on another tooth you're looking at a root canal?
And now I'm listening to Dave's false-advertising, less-than amazing 1981 set as the novacaine wears off. Cosby was right - Novacaine doesn't kill pain, it just postpones it.
-
Well, it's not Shake It Up, but I can't say Since You've Gone is an improvement.
Rhyming "mess" with "treacherous"--not good songcraft.
No, NOT a strong set, Dave.
-
sorry, Dave, one bustout does NOT an "amazing set" make. Esp when "Lunatic Fringe" wins BOS
"Cars when they were GOOD"???? Oh, Dave.
-

and isn't this the 2nd Cars song that rhymes "sensu-ess" badly? Or am I crazy?
-
Cosby was right - Novacaine doesn't kill pain, it just postpones it.
Put some JELL-O pudding on it
We can't feel your pain (literally) but we feel your pain, bub.
-
Annalisa's bonus choices (Elvis, Kinks, Squeeze) all rocked -- and Elvis' "Clubland" it is!

Hey, how 'bout a "Bourne Ultimatum" set for Friday?
Bourne to Run
Bourne to Be Alive
Bourne to Be Wild
Bourne in the USA...
might be the novacaine, but I just sent Dave the following email:

Now I know you'll be in SJ on Friday, so this is mostly just for our own amusement, but WTF, maybe you'll think this is a cool idea. I mean, when else is the idea even possible?
At minimum I hope it's worth a grin.
Best,
Mark
