Title: 13 May 2016: Hits From Hell
Post by: Lightnin' Rod on May 13, 2016, 10:06:57 AM
Listening "live".

1 - The Night Chicago Died. Paper Lace.
2 - Lady My Humps, Black Eyed Peas.  (couldn't agree more - this is awful)

BOS Rodney Dangerfield from Caddyshack - "This place sucks!  Only reason I'm hear is because maybe I'll buy it."

OOps, forgot to kick it off at 10am. So I'm about three songs behind.

And Dennis gave us a shoutout. Geoff, I'll be curious if that results in any new member applications.

And off we go...Paper Lace TOTHK.

6 - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, William Shatner

He certainly Shatnered all over this one.

Yeah, I think had Dave continued, he would have included My Humps in a set by now. This is hideous.

From the HFH HOF. Classically bad. How this got to be a hit is beyond me, but it was a different time.

Not a problem. I'm not nearly so hardcore about such things these days.

Where the hell did he find this one? And was it ever on the radio?

One thing I've noticed in all of the sets Dennis has done this week is that his deep cuts are beyond deep, they're downright unheard. I hate to say that's a bad thing, but I think there's a certain level of obscure familiarity that even the deep cuts need to have. They should have been on top 40 or progressive FM radio at some point, even if it was for less than a month. This song is case in point. Neither Rod nor I have any memory of hearing it; I'll be anxious to know of RGMike knows it.

Funny, this one has a lot in common with My Humps. Both about making the beast with two backs, just that this was about as graphic as they could get on Top 40 radio in '76.

You have to assume they knew how excruciating this was when they recorded it. But I'd love to hear the cuts that didn't make it. Once.

Also: excessive use of reverb.

Well, it was a #2 in the UK.  And, from Wiki:

Quote
Despite being banned on BBC Radio 1 because it "was not credible", the track proved to be a commercial hit

I'd have to agree with bbc1.

" 'Shatner' is the past-tense of 'Shitner' " as Alex Bennett used to say.

OK, I'm caught up with your commentary.

7. Pat Boone - Enter Sandman

Now this one was intentionally bad. Which in my book gives it negative HFH points. (The big band arrangement is kinda fun though.)

8. Starship - We Built This City

This one qualifies.

9. Richard Harris - Macarthur Park

The godfather of all HFHs, possibly a HFH evergreen.  And now, I can almost picture Dumbledore singing it.

except for that Black Lace obscurity, this appears to have been a Morey HFHs "best-of" spanning many years. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yep, I agree. The other day I was listening to an archived HFH set, and 3 of the songs we've heard today were in that set as well (Honey, Afternoon Delight, We Built This City).

I think I'm going to guess that Macarthur Park is the song Dennis harbors a secret (or not so secret) fondness for.

Ooooooh, the l-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g version!

And #10 is..... Sailor - Danger on the Titanic.

Yeah, I have definitely not heard this one, but it certainly qualifies. (I had to Soundhound it to get the ID.)

I've often mentioned that a set often needs at least one song that most are familiar with (an LN, if you will) in order to 'ground' the set - otherwise many listeners will be lost. I don't really have an issue with the "no plays", unless the set consists of nothing but.

Finally had a chance to listen this morning. I'd never heard "Agadoo" either -- and I'm a geek who's fairly familiar with the '80s UK Top 40 charts.  Don't think they ever played it on the recently-departed Atlantic 2NG in the 10 years or so that I listened to them.  But the Brits LURVE that sort of cheezy/crappy pseudo-"tropical" nonsense. It's alot like a bunch of other similar records in that vein.  I'm familiar with Sailor's UK hits but not that track.

And as always I'll defend "We Built This city" with my dying breath.

Youtubed "Agadoo" this morning - all I can say is that "Hit From Hell" is appropriate... the wife commented "Sounds like a Kidzbop song without a source".

another example of a cheezy pseudo-tropical UK hit (a #1 from 1975):

Most of Boney M's horrifying awful hits also fall into this category. (see also Eurotrash disco)
