Title: KBCO, 8/13/08: 1980
Post by: RGMike on August 13, 2008, 08:38:56 AM
It's Marcus vs. Dave for "Best 1980 set of week"  No chance we'll hear MJ, the Tempts or George Benson, and if he plays "Althea" again my head may explode.

You should've found something from the exploding head scene in Scanners.

I was chatting with her on the phone, talking about the Dead in 10@10 sets and the love the CO listening audience gives and she mentioned Althea was slated for the coming week.

I have not made a bday request yet. I'll be listening online from Tahoe. Leaving Friday for a week.

it's funny, I was about to post how different Marcus' set was from Dave's, but equally good, and then he goes and plays consecutive songs we heard yesterday.  Followed by a very Morey-ish Genesis song.

indeed, I was about to declare a draw: Dave gets points for playing 3 R&B tunes; Marcus gets MAJOR props from me for "Wash Bullets". And they both draw my ire for you-know-who.

Absolutley. I wrote my senior history thesis on Biko.

"You can blow out a candle, but you can't blow out a fire."

That line is one of the all time great epigraphs, and...

"...and the eyes of the world are watching now."

...is one of the most prophetic lines in R'n'R history.  It literally came true, although it took another ten years.

anyone recall that SNL (?) weekend update item that went something like this? -> "The Washington Bullets are changing their name to remove the bad connotations their currrent name implies to DC residents.  Their new name will be the Virginia Bullets."

I don't, but that is hysterical.  Is this a coincidence?  or were you listening to KFOG earlier when they were talking about best SNL bits, especially the faux commercials?

heh, although I did hear the KFOG jocks and callers talk about their fave SNL bits earlier, most of what they were talking about had nothing to do with me pulling that bit of trivia out of my head.    It's just one of those jokes you never forget.  (I lived in DC for a while too, so that prob helped my retention.)

No, he was way down on the Carolina border in Lynchburg.

But the church that the town of Falls Church was named after still stands and has a pew marker that reads "George Washignton slept here."  <rimshot>

sorry, old joke.

Mark, were you aware that the Mamas & Papas cover of "Dancing in the Street" name-checks Falls Church in the outro?  I guess Mama Cass was originally from there too.
