Of course I wasn't here back then; but I remember it getting FM play in NY and actually some Top 40 attention (it was re-released as a single in the wake of "Maggie May", I believe). For years I thought it was supposed to be Rod under an assumed name; I didn't find out until later that there really was a Python Lee Jackson.  A wonderful song at any rate.
