Steve just gave a few hints to what's in store. Apparently we're getting some Monkees as well as the Mamas and Papas doing Motown (thus either "My Girl" or "Dancing in the Streets"). Should be sweetness.

and, per the website, Hollies and S&G.
And here's the SOOP-er Supremes! And there ain't NUTHIN' I can do about it...
-
Early BOS to the morse code guitars of "You Keep Me Hanging On." Perhaps Motown's most ambitious moment of the '60s save "Reach Out, I'll Be There."

especially the way they switch channels back-n-forth in the stereo version.

When he's substituting his coke for gin, is he talking about the Real Thing or the White Lines?
-
"and now I find you in exactly the position that suits ME..."
oh my how you talk!
-
BOS2 the Spoonful, longtime personal faves. Sebastian's first solo LP from 1970 is a lost gem, BTW.
-
WOS to the Lovin' Spoonful. I love a lot of their stuff, but actively hate "Daydream" and "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind."
-
Shimmy ya, Cass! Love the wiggy funk of this. Did they arrange their own backing vocals or was that Lou Adler's contribution to the mix?

because...?
WOS the M's & P's, worst (and most unnecessary) cover of the song this side of Jagger/Bowie.
-
great bass line, lots of fun

I thought John Phillips arranged their vocals in general, but I don't really know.

Oh please -- that ending! are they trying (badly) to sound black? Ugh!

Secret Agent Man
I loved the TV show at the time.
-
Woo hoo! "Secret Agent Man"! Kiss those persuasive lips!

Haven't worked out an articulation of that yet. They just don't sound good to me.
Neither does "I'm a Believer" anymore, fwiw.
But HM to "Secret Asian Man": Johnny Rivers' originals are infinitely better than his covers. It's been 25 years since I last heard "Slow Dancin' (Swayin' to the Music)," I'm compelled to note.

No, I think they're just trying to sound like they always do/did. Not getting this comment.

I love that line. Can't wait to use it in conversation...
-
something about that opening sequence sounds like the Tegan and whatever song

The original version by the Funky Kings (sung and written by Jack Tempchin) is one of my all-time favorites. KSAN was real big on Funky Kings. I never saw it released on CD.
-
flash-in-the-pan award: The New Vaudeville Band. Talk about a one-joke act.
-
tender song.
-
BOS3 Troggs, "A Girl Like You". another lost gem.

I'm talking about where they start saying "dancing in DE streets". it sounds very affected. either they're trying to sound black or trying to sound like '50s beat-hipsters, hard to tell. It's always seemed pretty ridiculous to me -- I've always liked their body of work but they're incredibly white, and that bit just underscores it.

Against my better judgement, I'll throw in my two bits. I think this track is all about fun. I never thought they were trying to sound black. The whole goof at the end should underscore the joyful silliness of it all.

Darn, missed it. JIT for Couldn't Get It Right.
