Title: 2 Feb 2012: it's... a "Mystery Year" (1988)
Post by: RGMike on February 02, 2012, 08:01:39 AM
I wasn't connected last nite so I'm happy I didn't miss a chance to make requests that wouldn't be played anyway.

I'm gonna guess it will be 1993 with copious clips from Groundhog Day.

Seems reasonable. And keeping up with that theme (as well as LN) will probably be the Proclaimers.

C'mon, man, it's been what, ten whole days, since the last '85 trip. To quote a buddy on FB, I'm "jonesin'" to get back to that year.

eek: WOS1 Crapton.  Hiatt gets a "meh".

looks like HTY and I (hey there's a sitcom title if ever there was) are both wrong. It's 1988. And I doubt any cool leftover requests are gonna make it in.

uber-LN1: Winwood, rollin'. Sheesh.

Hi. Hi, Hi Hi.  Uber-LN2 REM -- another case of "Webster played this at 6:00 this morning" -- right before Sonny & Cher, in fact.

BOS Big-Top Pee-Wee, which I saw again recently -- it was even better than id remembered (in '88 I thought it suffered in comparison to ...Big Adventure)

whose version of "Cupid" is this?  A bustout methinks.

The difference between LN's is whether you like the song or not.  I don't care for REM, and they're played all the time on KFOG, so...LN.  Willburys are played all the time, but I like them better, so no so much LN for me.

actually I LN songs I like all the time. For example: LN4 "Ana Ng"

and uber-uber-uber LN5 Proclaimers. This is one of the worst '88 sets ever, IMHO.

You're onto something there ggould. But this is still an LN fest, even by late 80's standards. Proclaimers, Y&S . . .

Now, Siouxsee. This is definitely the greatest "hits" of 1988.

LN? LameNess?  Oh, I see it in the Glossary Thread now -- "least necessary".

Methinks that thread should really be in the 10@10 forum, and made sticky, so it stays at the top.  And yeah, the page hasn't been updated in a bit, but that's fine if the thread is prominently visible.  (Although the page could probably use a linkback to the forum so people can see the latest disucssion.)

Anyways, Peek a Boo isn't a bustout or anything, but it is nice to hear, nonetheless.

Thanks for that Darryl.

The only good thing about this set is that it was short.  But wow: that was Graham Parker doing "Cupid"?? Live'n'learn.

and our forst song after 10@10 is the equally unnecessary Edie Brickell and the New "I-wanna-marry-a-millionaire-songwriter"s

And after Edie Brickell (who I actually liked, maybe the first 100 times I heard them, and I seem to recall buying and digging the cassette) was another 80s staple, Phil Collins.  WTF?

I partially agree with you, but there's a little more than like/disliking it, imo.  During the 97 set, I like the Blur & 3EB songs well enough but I gave them an "F-" for necessary because they're played on 10@10 all the time, in addition to being played on KFOG all the time and all other stations all the time.

OTOH, there are a few overplayed songs that sound so good on 10@10 that I don't think I'd ever give them an "LN", such as "Don't You Forget About Me."  Likewise, even though that Edwin McCain song was its first appearance, I LN'd it because it's still played everywhere a lot and added nothing to the set...and was positively awful, to boot.

02/02/12 - Thursday! Mystery Year...When Are We?

 1. Eric Clapton - After Midnight '88
 2. John Hiatt - Drive South
(News: Robin Williams' wakeup call to the astronauts on the Discovery space shuttle)
 3. Steve Winwood - Roll With It
(Movie: Rain Man - Ray (Dustin Hoffman): "I'm an excellent driver!")
 4. The Primitives - Crash
 5. R.E.M. - Pop Song '89
(Move: Big Top Pee-Wee (Paul Reubens) goes ga-ga over Gina (Valeria Golino))
 6. Graham Parker - Cupid
(Movie: Big Top Pee-Wee (Things go wrong when Pee-Wee plays with Winnie's (Penelope Ann Miller) hair-OUCH! )
 7. The Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care
(News: A new threat - computer viruses)
 8. They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng
 9. The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
(Movie: Rain Man - Ray: "O.K., but I get to be on top!")
10. Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peek-A-Boo (B.O.S!)

My assessment stands: one of AL's worst (and least necessary) sets in a while.  Belated WOS to "Cupid" -- We can't get "Heat Treatment" in '76/'77 or anything from Squeezing Out Sparks in 1980 but we get this lame cover? Was that a request?  or does DC have some sort of research that says it was a good idea to play that one?

Yes, that is what I meant.  Not Rain Man, but I don't remember what Tom Hanks' character name is in Big.
