What the hell!
From Dave's page
So....whaddya guys think for Friday the 13th 10at10? Hits From Hell (NO!) or....a set about LUCK? (yes!)
-
So far there's 2 comments replying to Dave -- me and another guy -- both demanding HFH! I told Dave to do the "luck" set for St Patrick's, like he used to do back in the day.
-
"I'm just not feelin' it this year... I'm a little scared of the concept, suddenly", sez Dave regarding Hits From Hell.
WTF?!?
-

WTF?!?
Maybe he "just wasn't feelin'" the Xmas Card concept last month either.
But I can only condone the "luck" idea if the TOTHC is Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' "Bad Luck," parts 1 AND 2.

He's been up
And down
Tryin' to get the feelin agaiiiiiiin.....
iirc, "Bad Luck" was indeed the TOTHC last time he did a "luck" set.

Maybe our harping on him for annually recycling the same songs for Tax Day, Pride, and Halloween has had the unintentional effect of putting him off the recurring sets that we actually like.

Joan Armatrading, "Walk Under Ladders"... Stevie, "Superstition"... It could actually be a much better set than just 10 songs with "luck" in the title (as it would have to be on St Pat's Day). Of course, we'd also get Wings, "With a Little Luck". I'd still prefer HFH.
-
There are now 11 comments on Dave's blog, 10 of which favor HFHs. (the 11th is actually a good suggestion for "superstition" songs, which I like better than "luck")
One guy suggested "Strictly Instrument-HELL". I REALLY like that one!
But that censorship software on the blog replies has gotta go -- it actually censors the "tit" in "Supers(tit)ion"!
-
Must go chime in with a vote for HFH.
With a little luck.... we can work it out.
I posted and someone already posted after me. the *ass* was removed from Cassidy. heh heh. They said ass.

Highway to Hell
AC/DC

For segue: "Christmastime in Hell" from South Park.
And you gotta include the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

The people have spoken!! It's an HFH Vertical Tasting, '75 to '84.
Dave on why he was anti-HFH this time: "I just decided 10 bad songs in a row is bad radio". To which Greg replied: "You just figured that out now, after doing HFH for 20 years??" LOL!

So if he's starting in '75, then no "The Streak." But "Disco Duck" in '76 is a distinct possibility.
And we wrap things up just before "Tarzan Boy" would've been eligible.

Tarzan Boy's no HFH -- it's pop brilliance!
But I betcha we lead off with "Convoy" for Alicat.

Gawd I'd be happy.

Gawd I'd be happy.
Breaker-one-nine, I copy that, come on?
-
Gawd I'd be happy.
Breaker-one-nine, I copy that, come on?
’cause we got a little convoy
Rockin’ through the night.
Yeah, we got a little convoy,
Ain’t she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain’t nothin’ gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin’ convoy
’cross the u-s-a.
Convoy!

Cool, we can have a sing-a-long. And to that purpose, I enclose the following for when we get there (and we almost certainly will):
Mr. Roboto
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Mata ah-oo hima de
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Himitsu wo shiri tai
You're wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man
I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive
I'm not a robot without emotions-I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control
I am the modren man, who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see my true identity
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape just when I needed to
Thank you-thank you, thank you
I want to thank you, please, thank you
The problem's plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.
The time has come aat last
To throw away this mask
So everyone caan see
My true identity...
I'm Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy!

Note that our last HFH Vertical Tasting was also '75 thru '84:
75 - Thank God I'm a Country Boy
76 - Shannon
77 - How Much Love (Leo Sayer)
78 - Let's All Chant
79 - In the Navy
80 - Lost in Love
81 - Morning Train
82 - Ebony & Ivory
83 - Mr. Roboto
84 - Footloose
I'm betting we hear almost all of those, if not all, given Dave's lack of enthusiasm.
-
Let's All Chant was a HFH!?
WTF?
-
yikes! karen singing to the mailman! i smell cheddar!
-
ooo! it's date-specific! Which rules out reruns from last time, at least.
OK... not Karen's finest hour...
-
yikes! karen singing to the mailman! i smell cheddar!
Is it OK to admit that I *still* really like her voice? :)
-
From the intro, it sounds like Dave's HFH aversion might be from having to debate Fogheads ad nauseam on whether a particular song is a HFH or a guilty pleasure.
Carpenters' Please Mr. Postman--def. HFH.
-
this is a schizzy song. Admittedly an HFH for most of the song, but a killer guitar solo at end
-

More than OK. One of THE great voices, in fact. But not her best single, not by a long shot.
-
aaarrrgh 76 is flooding back
I am music
I write the songs.......
ewwwwwwwww

By all means! And how about that cheesy Farfisa organ? Sounds like Crocodile Rock

He does write the songs, but fortunately (for Barry), he didn't write this one. Who did? Watch this space...Bruce Johnston.
-

do you want to be her "boyfriend?" :)
gosh, this is going to be a painful set - "i write the songs?!?!?!" i'm terribly pained and pleased.
-
GAH! The curse of Ft13! Just as Dave was getting ready to play the first song- I got totally interuptted by 2 coworkers filling me in on something that I guess I should care about- but
a) don't and
b) SHUT UP!
So, I missed Karn Carpenter? Rats!
Go, Barry! Write those songs and make the young girls cry.
-
it's from me, it's for you, it's from HELL! poor Barry -- he just don't get no respect.
-
After a long hiatus, I had to come back for HFH
Sing it, Barry!

Thanks guys, that's a big relief... (I can come out of the closet about still liking Karen Carpenter a lot) :D

me and susie swapped so much.....tongue?
-
OMFG, Engelbert! Genius as a comeback strategy, awful as a single.
"your love is real, it makes me cry..."
-
Oh, man- I really hate this one.
-
Sounds like it's a cheeze-fest on today's HFH.
But we were into our third page of posts before the second song of the set was done--I think that's some kind of record.
-
Oh, man- I really hate this one.
Ditto, I've had to take OFF the headphones for the past 2 songs ... too much pain.
-
After a long hiatus, I had to come back for HFH
Sing it, Barry!
welcome back! just in time for engledengle! brick red polyester sportscoats never looked so fine!
-
...I'm still in love with you.
Does not offend my feeble sensibilities.
-
ack!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a kind of obvious one.
You light up my life.
PAIN PAIN
-
this is not the orig version of "You Light Up My Life"... a remake by Debbie for another label, perhaps?
-
Aw, c'mon! It's Debbie Boone. Singin about God! It could be worse.. it could be Dee Dee Conn.
I love that this is Marge & Homer Simpson's song....
Homer: Wow! The guy she's singing this about must be really happy.
Marge: I think she's singing about God.
Homer: Oh. Well, he's always happy... or angry. I can't remember.
-
ack!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a kind of obvious one.
You light up my life.
PAIN PAIN
i think this is one of the most beautifulest songs ever.

I was wondering about that--but I thought 78 was about the right year for this one. Some research/explanation is required.
-
shutupshutupshutupshutup!!!!
babs and neil! i'mi going to cry. or just dance about my room with a drumstick as a mic.
-
BOS Barbra & Neil. This is a brilliant record of it's kind.
-
HM to Neil Diamond. At least we got to hear "Shilo" & "Kentucky Woman" earlier today!

Actually it may have been Didi Cohn's version.

Per Allmusic/Billboard, YLUML hit number one on the Adult Contemporary and Pop Singles charts and number four on the Country Singles chart...in 1977. But if I was counting correctly, it came up as song #4, which would put it in the 1978 slot for the set.
Good ol' Dave--no rules are hard and fast.
-
babs and donna?!?!?!? i'm *so* coming out!!!!!!!!!
-
DOUBLE BABS!!! OMFG!!!
Who's chick #2? Amazing seque from "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", I gotta say. Is it like that on the album, or is that Dave's magic? Never mind that first question -- gotta be Donna Summer.
-
did you hear that note?
-

Thay is fuckin' weird, even for Dave -- he's never played either on 10@10 but he plays 'em on the morning show!

did you hear that note?
yes, that was a most miraculous segue. someone MUST record the replay?!?!?!?!? i don't have the technology (no, not even analog).
-
It's a love fest.
I love you more than I can say.......

Well, it was definitely still charted in Jan '78 -- orig released in Aug '77 and it was #1 for 10 friggin' weeks! Still wondering about that version, tho'. Maybe the original's out-of-print.
-
she sure is. actually these days she's bustin' out all over. Too many bonbons.
i wouldn't kick her out of bed.
Well, if she's that big there may not be room for the two of you...
And the Neil Diamond songs were requested. Dave had a Neil reqiest-o-rama TWIN SPIN!
-
I'll give a "So what? Big deal." to Leo Sayer. Just a yawn.
-
Yeah, "Physical" is pretty awful. And the video is painful.
-
ONJ!!! This is, like, the gayest HFH EVAH!
Let me hear your body tawk!
-
Yeah, "Physical" is pretty awful. And the video is painful.
Ack! Truly despise this song...

I admit I wore em.
-
dude, "the girl is mine" is not a hit from hell. it's an act of god!
:)
-
leg warmers?
But, of course. I mean- Olivia looks cute enough in her leo-tard & all. But, then there's, like, a fat guy. And wacky, fast-motion speed filming nonsense and (shudder).
-
"I'm a lover, not a fighter, MacCauley..."
The doggone record is bad.
-
The doggone girl is yours. Really?
more PAIN.

a vengeful, spiteful wrathful god. "You keep dreamin..."

Maybe Melissa Etheridge & Samantha Fox could do a remake...
OMG "Curly Shuffle" -- definitely most hellish. A record that's funny... ONCE.
-
As one of Dave's most obnoxious critics -- I must give credit where credit is due. That was one of the best HFHs I can recall. And when you condider he limited himself to being date-specific, nothing short of incredible. Kudos!
-
Agreed. As Leonard Pinth-Garnell would say: "Exquisetly bad!"
-
Annalisa's Bonus HFH: she looked at the Jan 1985 chart and chose "Like A Virgin" -- but instead of playing Madonna's version, she's playing Lords of the New Church's hilarious send-up. And she didn't even play the whole thing!
-

samantha fox? is she *that* wild of a dame? did i already know this, and forget? who can keep up with all the comings out these days? did that big-boned girl from southern alberta come out yet?
maybe i should have bought that samantha fox greatest hits album i saw in walgreen's last week. or was that stacey q?

I missed the set, but did Dave play Kasey Cisyk's version of YLUML? She was originally supposed to have the hit with it, but when Debby Boone's version got all the attention, Kasey settled for a #80 chart hit. I've only heard her version once.
The Leo Sayer was a misstep; he did far worse than "More Than I Can Say" ("Long Tall Glasses," anyone?). For 1980, you've got the Christopher Cross songbook (I dig, but many others don't, and that's OK). 1981 I would have gone with Stars on 45 if it fit the date.

It was indeed Debbie -- a remake, apparently -- but Dave acknowledged the emails questioning the version. Poor Kasey... where is she now? (or, for that matter, where's Didi Conn?)

This week in 1981, Mr Sayer was joined in the Top 10 by:
"Love on the Rocks", Neil Diamond
"Every Woman in the World", Air Supply
"Lady", Kenny Rogers
So Dave had his pick of hellish tunes.
(AND: also on the Hot 100 and fading fast... "What Do You Give a Wookie For Xmas?")
