Talk about soothing balm after an awful set: switched to KPOO and I'm hearing Al Green's version of "For The Good Times". Oh my.
ETA: followed by Otis, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" *swoon*
-
wow -- Tina's version of "Use Me". I've never heard this before.
-
Just tuned in about 20 minutes ago, and I'm getting the usual buffering issues. Mike, do you usually have this problem or are you getting a more consistent stream? (And if it's the latter, do you have a secret?) I'd love to listen to KPOO most Mondays, but it's a constant test of my patience.

I find that it comes & goes -- sometimes the buffering is VERY annoying and sometimes there are long stretches with no buffering at all. I'm in a buffering cycle as we speak. Some days are better than others, but they really do need to work on it.
this Monday morning woman sure does love her "risque" blues records. "Roll With Me Henry", "Big 10-inch Record" (pre-Aerosmith), etc.

Yep, she usually loads the last hour of her set with all sorts of "jelly-roll" blues. Today I particularly dug (between buffering breaks) the original version of "It Ain't The Meat, It's the Motion" which Maria Muldaur revived in the 70s, on her Waitress in a Donut Shop album.
I'm thinking the streaming issues may simply have to do with the number of streams their server is attempting to feed. My streaming problems diminished markedly just after noon, when one would assume people sign off and go to lunch. I can't imagine that Judge's audience would be any smaller than what's-her-name's.
Btw, I also get a laugh out of the fact that she prefers to be anonymous on-air--I've never heard her or anyone--refer to her by name, although the KPOO site reveals her name to be Marilynn Fowler.
-
I've been buffering-free since noon, too.
Prince, "Irresitstible Bitch" -- damn, I don't think I've ever heard this on the radio.
-
Stephanie Mills, "Pilot Error" -- haven't heard this since it was a hit.
-
The Temps (or Eddie Kendricks solo) doing "Any Day Now". New to me.
-
High Inergy, "You Can't Turn Me Off (in the Middle of Turning Me On)", a neglected late-'70s gem.
-
DAMN! Jesse Johnson (feat. Sly Stone), "Crazay".
-
This. Is. The Ghetto. (a live version, no less!)
-
Calexico's version of "Alone Again Or" sounds nice, but I need the real thing. Listened to the live Forever Changes CD on the way to Morro Bay on Friday.
-
Isaac Hayes, pre-Scientology, "The Feeling Keeps on Coming", from Joy... not that far removed from the parodic, I-wanna-make-love-to-yo'-womanly-body stuff he did on South Park.
-

Heard the orig. Love version on the Morning show this am, after their Death, Cab, or Cutie contest. Arthur Lee was the answer of the "death" question--of course, the foghead punted it, had no clue. But they played Alone Again Or right afterward, even before a DCFC song, which was the show they were promoting.

Yeah, it was kind of bittersweet. The DCFC fan had no idea who Arthur Lee was, but it was at least nice to hear the song, even if it's actually a Bryan MacLean song. I was fantasizing that he'd play the version from the live album Gaz reviewed, which is so emotional.

DAMN! Jesse Johnson (feat. Sly Stone), "Crazay".
Wow, I haven't heard that since it was on the charts, and couldn't even tell you how it sounds.

I still have the 45.

Just tuned in to BCO for a bit, just to see how far along they were (they're in the H's) and happened to hear a live version of the Beat Farmers doing Happy Boy. And before that was Willie Nelson. Which really has me wondering just what kinds of stuff they have in their archives. Sounds like they've really got a trove of stuff there.
-
CG-ing today: FYC, "Johnny Come Home".
followed -- OMGWTF -- by "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep"!
-
OMGWTF2: Kevin Johnson's orig version of "Rock'n'Roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life)", later made a hit by Mac Davis.
-
"I asked my friends about her, but all they lips was tight." The Queen sings again -- "Lucille".
-
"I asked my friends about her, but all they lips was tight." The Queen sings again -- "Lucille".
I didn't think tight lips had ever been a problem for Ms. Penniman.

I didn't know (until Little Steven mentioned it Sunday) that the orig lyric of "Tutti Frutti" was "tutti frutti/good booty" LOL!
and speaking of loose lips, CG plays Georgie M, "A Different Corner":
"little by little, you brought me to my kneees..."
Perhaps Messrs Michael & Penniman could do a duet: "30 Days in Your Hole".
-
a lovely Hollies rarity, "Sorry Suzanne", from early '69.
-

Did he quote the rest? "If it don't fit / You can force it / You can grease it / Make it easy," or something like that. Wowsers.
-
Hot Buttered (White) Soul on CG: TJ, "Help Yourself", followed by the Silver Fox himself, "Behind Closed Doors". My my my.
-
WLNG '80s Nugget o' the Day: Pseudo Echo, "Funkytown".
-
Yippee! VIP's back on-line. (But the just-played feature still ain't workin' -- it's read "Baby I Need Your Lovin" for 2 weeks now!)
-
Nuthin' Goin On But Gwen Guthrie! No romance without finance!
and now Jackie Wilson's "Sweetest Feeling", but this version is a duet between him and... Who? Spliced together after-the-fact, I'm guessing.
-
Marvin's orig of "Wherever I lay My hat", a more upbeat version than the one Paul Young had a huge UK hit with in the '80s.
-
Manhattan Transfer, "Spice of Life", another Rod Temperton compo that sounds like it was a leftover from Off The Wall or Thriller.
-
little-heard Dusty: "Some of Your Lovin'", from '65.
-
TANC: Bonnie Pointer's "Heaven Must've Sent You" -- not the disco version Dave played last week, but its B-side, a note-for-note cover of the Elgins' original hit.
TANC2: ReeRee and George, "I Knew You Were Waiting", which I jonesed for on Monday.

VIP-ing this hour -- the 5-D's version of "Workin on a Groovy Thing". Sublime.

I went with DDT & was rewarded with Jo Jo Gunne "Run, Run , Run" in the beginning & now got the Mighty Zep's "Moby Dick". Is this still regarded as the best drum solo in all of Rock?
-
the Mighty Zep's "Moby Dick".
I love it when Percy sings about himself!
-
I don't really consider Petula Clark "soul" (Dusty she ain't -- oh those wacky Brits!) but "Sign of the Times" was a delight to hear anyway.

I think that's quite up for grabs. Not being a drummer, I don't know how qualified I am to judge. Bonham was great at what he did, but was also quite ham-fisted. Cream's "Toad" was an earlier famous drum solo song.
I think it would be fun to list famous drum solos. Is it a solo, it there's 2 drummers? (GD, ABB)

Famous drum solos I can pretty much live without:
Iron Butterfly, "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida"
Beatles, "The End"
Rush, "80% Of Our Catalog"
My favorite drum solo isn't a famous one: Whoever's playing on Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up." My favorite drummer, John Barbata, never really did solos in his Turtles/CSN/Jefferson Starship work.
-
VIP again plays that cover of JB's "There Was a Time" by Gene Chandler.
-
damn! Chuck Wood, "Seven Days (is Too Long)", later covered by Dexy's.
-

Barbata actually had a pretty big drum solo in the early JS era. The first time I saw it, it was monumentally mind-blowing. The next time...
[audience all chimes in: "NOT SO MUCH!"]
-
"you knew durn well I was a snake before you took me in!"
Al Wilson on VIP; preceded by the glorious "Black Pearl" by the Checkmates Ltd. Killer stuff.
-
a cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomo'w" I've never heard (and I've heard many). Male vocal, '60s Northern Soul-ish. Nicely done.
followed by that lovely "Sing a Rainbow/Love is Blue" medley by the Dells.
-
OMGWTFLOL! PJ Broby, "Niki Hoeky" I'll dig ya on the scooby-doo!
wish VIP would fix that "just played" thing, 'cause I dunno who's doing this soul interp of "Under My Thumb".
-
A soulful cover of "First Cut is the Deepest" by a woman named PP Arnold -- new to me, but check out her Wiki entry. Quite interesting:

Indeed. And you really MUST seek out Norma Fraser's competing reggae version, dating to '67 or '68. My friend Jagger put it on a mix for me at Christmastime and I fell in love with it. Vocally she's similar to Arnold, but the arrangement is different.
-
as I prepare to leave CG for KRSH's Soul Patrol, Greg plays the Pasadenas, "Tribute", a wonderful, lost, late-'80s single I've praised many times here.
-

You ol' boog-a-boo, you!
-
Sounds like KRSH SP has one (or more) of the Persuasions live in-studio.

it's one (ex-)Persuasion, and they're playing not-yet-released cuts from a forthcoming CD. Here's his take on "Islands in the Stream"! Nice.
-
CG has declared this coming Wed to be "King & Queen Day". Why? 'cause it's the King's (Elvis) death day and the Queen's (Madonna) birthday. They're giving away stuff.
Think we could persuade Dave to do a half Elvis/half Madonna set?
Nah.
-
More JB! "Get Up Offa That Thing"
-
This VIP Friday "Beach Music" show is great stuff. Heard an hilarious song called "Grunts Moans & Groans", about a guy in a motel with his mistress who realizes his wife is next door because he recognizes her, um, boudoir noises. LOL!
-
OMGWTFLOL! Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis II, "Your Love", a wonderful forgotten single (a Top 20 hit) and one of the best Marvin & Tammi hommages ever. Haven't heard this since it was on the charts.
