Never heard Dave tip the year in the pre-spin spiel before!
And he said before the commercials that it would include the best TV show theme song of the decade. Bob Newhart (the big band version)? That'd get my vote.
-
'75 twice in one day -- any bets on duplicate songs?
-
Ready Steve? (uh-huh)
Mick? (yea-ah)
Andy? (ok)
Alright fellas, let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
-
'75 twice in one day -- any bets on duplicate songs?
I'd lay money on ELO, if not Fire on High then something else from Face the Music (Poker has been a recent Dave-fave).

Duplicate album (Face The Music) anyway..."Evil Woman"

My vote would be for "Nanny & the Professor" (thank you, Addrisi Bros.) but I'm sure that's not where Dave was going. I'd expect either Maude or Barney Miller. No, wait -- Baretta.

No sooner posted than done. But we get the hit instead.
-
I knew as soon as Dave said "1975" we'd hear "Ballroom Blitz". Not that I'm complaining! Woo!
-
VVHM to ELO. Y'all know how great a production I think this is. As close as Jeff Lynne ever came to FONKY.

Barney Miller kicks butt.

I'd lay money on the Rockford Files, which first aired in the 74-75 season. Baretta was in '75, so maybe.

vhm, if not bos to bokonon!!

Agreed. The last great ELO record--the ones that followed seemed to have lost something, and when he canned his string section, well, it was all over.
There was a reconstituted ELO touring on the Konocti oldies circuit a couple years back--anyone know who was in it or if they were any good?
-
Very nice (heh) to hear Ambrosia. I bet we get some "Born to Run" action in there to. Maybe in a couple more songs...
-
The not-surprising Ambrosia. Who let the prog out?
-

Hey Dave, you up for lunch with me & the princess tomorrow?

An ELO tour would seem to me a case of utterly missing the point. They were/are the quintessential headphones band this side of Tears For Fears.

Good call. She's the One or maybe Night would be nice (nice, very nice) to hear.

they had a pretty good televised live show last year, or three years ago - i don't quite remember. the acoustics were great wherever they played. but i'm not too impressed with the sound at konochti...

Proxy BOS vote for the long-departed Rastrelnikov: Marley's Trenchtown Rock.

live bob may be bos!!!

Sure. Friday is a tad better, but if you're already doing Thursday, I'm there. Name yer spot!
-
did somebody order some bowie?
"he not only play the sax, he sing just as good as he want"
-
Three hours later than expected, I get my YA fix. Nice job, Mr. Sanborn. I don't want to cast a BOS, though: I'm holding out hope for a true surprise.

I got something else on Friday, let's do it tomorrow. POC, you got a preference for ethnic food on Castro Street? My last 3 times there were for Thai, Indian & Italian, but I am totally open to suggestions.
-
BOS2 to Bowie's Young Americans. This record and Station to Station are by far my two faves of his, and that's saying a lot.
Still waiting for this set's Gomer though--although perhaps the Marley song was it. Just didn't quite feel like one.

I'm waiting for Journey, myself. A little "Topaz", scarecrow.
Favorite two Bowie albums:
Hunky Dory
Ziggy

"One Day at a Time" is Dave's "Best TV Theme"?!
"This is it" indeed
-
Falling out of my chair..."One Day At A Time" is the best theme ever?
NO WAY!
And now Sugarloaf again.
-
i wouldn't have pegged sugarloaf as the duplicate track.
-
Dave's all-time TV theme is "One Day at a Time"?! That's like finding out he traded in his motorcycle for a Trabaut.
Meanwhile, hoping he atones for the Sugarloaf rehash by closing with Lennon's "#9 Dream." John 3/16, as it were.
-
This is the best TV theme of the decade? One Day at a Time? No, I'm sorry, you must be mistaken, sir.
Btw, where'd Dave get that "TV party tonight" bumper he's been using before his TV themes lately?
And here's the repeater from Chi-Town--who'd a guessed?
-
John 3/16, as it were.
quite nice.
-

NO WAY!

I am as stunned as you are. I'd've never predicted either occurrance.
Dave needs help.
-
and both times we got the short version of Sugarloaf, no?
-
I love that we all had *identical* reactions to all that.
Any sign of Alicat? Think she's in a Round 2 interview?
BOS to War. Very fond associations with this song, I don't know how one can NOT smile after hearing that refrain over and over.
-
"why can't we be friends" - this song makes me want to vomit.
when '75 sets attack, tonight at 11.

I dare say it was unanimous among us--at least five of us posted our disbelief.
-
Hah! I was singing "Why Can't We Be Friends" to myself this morning while I was making coffee. Wanna hear why? It's silly. Inexplicably, I was humming "Funky Nassau" on the way into work and my cow orker heard thought I said I was funky. I told him Nassau was funky. He said I was funky. Funky funky funky funky funky. That lead me to the jamming track on "Why Can't We Be Friends" in which the phrase "Funky funky funky funky funky funky funky..." appears. That song stinks, so I resorted to "WCWBF". So there you go.
-
where'd Dave get that "TV party tonight" bumper he's been using before his TV themes lately?
That's Black Flag, I do believe.
-

"sometimes i don't speak right,
but i know what i'm talking about" (sic)
you, of all people, should be appalled by such lyrics.
-
OK, Gaz, on three:
One...
Two...
Three...
Miracles BOS!!!!!!
-
Grace and salvation for Gaz!
-
Do I even need to say BOS to the majesty?
-

Really? Never woulda guessed. Likely the only way they'll ever appear in a 10@10 set, I'm thinking.
-

Only if we get the long-awaited Long Version.
-
< heaves sigh of relief that it's the long version >
-
One thing that goes underappreciated about the '70s JS albums is how improved their group vocals were over the unison singing approach of the JA records. I can only assume producer Larry Cox taught Paul Kantner how to best use his voice. The backing arrangements of this, "St. Charles," "Caroline," and "Count on Me" are nothing short of breathtaking.
I wish Victor were listening.
-
< heaves sigh of relief that it's the long version >
"I got a taste of the real world
When I went down on you girl..."
And then he got up to wash his face; when he come back to bed someone'd taken his place
-
I'm giving Best Flashback of Set to "Miracles". Veery '75.

and that someone was cracking an egg on his gal's back.
-
now there's a bos!!!! chain, baby!
-
And now one for the Princess!
We gotta be getting close to tune # 10 though--maybe no Springsteen after all.
-
I'm getting dizzy from all these trackbacks.
POC, does the Steely closer redeem the set for you?
(P.S. Yeah, the "don't speak right" verse is really really dumb and I wish it weren't there. I'm guessing that English wasn't Lee Oskar's first language. Indeed, I'm guessing that it's Lee Oskar singing those lines.)
-
but a VHM to Chain Lightning...

yes, the dan redeems everything. i'm about to swing right out of my chair.
no excuse for oskar. why can't he hire a translator, why can't he hire a translator...?
ooof, fawin' in wuv!
-
now there's a bos!!!! chain, baby!
You'll be glad to know this song was on our wedding mix (2 cassettes) for the reception.
-
Near-BOS to Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds (even though Joe Frank had left the band two years prior, a piece of trivia I find delightful). What a great, simple melody. What's that little piano-tinkle thing they keep doing called?
-
WPOS (worst pronunciation of Set): HJF&R, "Fawwin in Love". should be played back to back with Kenny Nolan's "I Wike Dweamin'"

My professor would just say it's the vernacular!
-
so the TV theme thing was really an excuse for Dave to try to get laid?
Feh.
-

Did Dave just pronounce it "fawwin" in the back-sell? I believe he did!
And was Dave trolling with his offer to listen to TV themes on his stereo system in exchange for a couple of bottles of Moet Chandon?
-

He's a killer queen, he is.

BOS to War. Very fond associations with this song, I don't know how one can NOT smile after hearing that refrain over and over.
Alicat called me on my cell to ask me to proxy "Miracles" for her, but I had to jet over to a customer at 10:30 & just now got back. She was not in an interview, but rather squiring 2nd-graders on a field trip.
I heard the back announce & I am pretty sure I was the gentleman in question who debated the TV theme choice with him. I said it wasn't even the best theme of the shows debuting in 1975, behind Barney Miller & Baretta. So does this mean I have an open invite to go drink champagne at Dave's house? He won't get laid tho.
-
He won't get laid tho.
you're so selfish. c'mon! take one for the team!
;)
-
So does this mean I have an open invite to go drink champagne at Dave's house? He won't get laid tho.
Dude, isn't this like the second time Dave's hit on you? No, seriously! I vaguely remember us teasing you about this in the past...
-

LSHIPMP! Y'know, Dave's gettin' old... he probably tires easily anyway... and you'd be drinkin' primo bubbly!
-

Could that have been the first (and likely the only) 6-way jinx in board history?
-

probably so! 7-way, if you count my thinking but not posting. i thought it was a joke.

No 2nd interview--not yet anyway. I went to a Celtic music show this morning and got to work at 1pm. Big meeting and announcements of upcming departures, mine and others. New manager sitting within 4 feet of me so viewing this and posting may be awkward but I'll try.
I called in my BOS for Miracles while on the road.
-
too lazy to log in. Just read the posts. I was listening to the backannounce but had three 7-year old boys in the car and was probably screaming at them to shut up and didn't hear Dave. Damn.
Mark, I say GO FOR IT. He has a nice little house. You could watch laserdiscs. Mike and I both reclined on his bed, it's comfortable. OK, I'm killing myself now. Family wonders why I'm chuckling as I type.
Say, wasn't Dave doing the champagne thing with Charles, the manners guy, at the Cliff House last Friday!?

Yikes. If Dave is hooking up with Charles "Social Grace":
then he's more desperate than we thought
