A heart attack, apparently.  And not just a concert, but a benefit for an Italian author whom the mafia wants killed after his writing an expose:

I was lucky enough to see her on that Paul Simon Graceland tour when it came through Chicago.  A historic figure indeed.

I hope she left that dress to Patti LaBelle in her will.

Likewise, I was lucky enough to see her on that tour in St. Louis.  She's also on this fantastic documentary called Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony, about the role of music & musical artists in surviving and then overcoming Apartheid.  I own the DVD.

TANC, I was wearing my Amandla Awethu sweatshirt all weekend (without knowing of her passing) even though I hadn't worn it in a couple years.

Apparently she was stricken while onstage singing her 1967 hit "Pata Pata":

I'd bet Dave finds an excuse to take us to 1967 some time this week, so that he can play Pata Pata.
Let's get right to it.

That would be great, Friday would seem obvious for '67 (or maybe a VT that includes it -- "Pata Pata" was actually on the charts at this time of year in '67).  I was thinking Dave might do another Bond Theme Set in honor of Quantum of Solace. I think the Jack White/Alicia Keys QOS theme is an unholy mess.

i think patti gave it to miriam in the first place!

i just finished reading saviano's book (about the mafia). it's pretty depressing once you realise how much control the mafie have over what you eat, what you wear, and where you sleep.

Doesn't KPOO have that very picture on their web site somewhere?

The only reason why I knew who Miriam Makeba was because she appeared in a season 8 episode of the Cosby Show.

Last nite KPOO's oldies guy played it, and now Bob Shannon is playing it on his WLNG "Behind the Hits" show. "The dance keeps going all night long..."
