KFOG's 10@10 / Re: 15 Sept 2015: an "encore" from... 1994
« on: September 15, 2015, 10:36:23 AM »
When I first looked at that list I had a feeling we'd heard a couple of those songs recently.

Yep. The Counting Crows song was in the last Local Artists set (the one that was a replay), and Elastica was in one of the two 95 sets we got during 90s week.

All that said, this set is pretty decent, as a lot of the AL 1.0 sets tended to be. Sounds a lot like what I was hearing in 94.
I agree completely. I really like Elastica. I'm surprised they weren't bigger.

yeah, good set!

That Elastica song is super catchy. I just looked them on on wikipedia and see they only released two studio records. One in 1995 and one in 2000. The 95 record produced five singles, three charted in the US on the Modern Rock chart, in 93, 94 and 95. Pretty good mileage from one album. If they had produced more stuff, they might've gotten a firmer hold here.

Here's hoping Urth's prediction of an all-'90s week doesn't come true. But they're really flogging that "Nuthin' But Nineties" weekend (tie-ins on Mind the Gap, etc).

1995: Supergrass are young. And I feel old. Feh.

I think The Sound is doing 1974.

ETA:  nope, sorry.. it's 1987

5. White Town - Your Woman

And once again... the lead-in to tonight's replay of 10@10?  White Town's Your Woman.
Trying to win the HAL9000 Award for Excellence in Radio Programming...

SMH. How hard is it to look at the 9:30-10 segment and delete anything that will repeat?  OTOH, I didn't know "Your Woman" was in the oldie rotation.

And although it wasn't mentioned here, the GSes noticed:  The lead-in song for the 10 AM version was Song 2 from Blur -- which is also from 1997.  That tells me AL doesn't control the tracks before her show starts -- and that the morning crew and AL don't collaborate to provide the listener with the KFOG optimum radio experience...

Sorry.. I had to catch my breath after laughing too hard at that phrase I just typed... :)  Needless to say, Renee, NoName and Irish Greg have already checked out and let HAL9000 do the thinking for the end of their show.

8. The Verve - Lucky Man
9. Everclear – I Will Buy You A New Life
10. Chumbawumba - Tubthumping

as soon as Tubthumping started I tuned away.  I do like that song, but I wanted to listen to The Sound LA because one of the GSes mentioned they were playing Wings' Silly Love Songs.  I caught the tail end of that as well as the last song on The Sound LA, Beth by KISS... :)

6. Elliott Smith - Miss Misery

Miss Misery is another repeat from last month's classic, but if she had to repeat one, this is the one I'd pick.

Sounds good to me, too.

Ho-hum set for me so far: the MMBs are completely unnecessary, I never really liked Cake, and the Meredith Brook's tune sounded like something that even Sheryl Crow passed on. White Town and Elliott are tops so far.

10. The Cure - Primary

Pretty synth-heavy set. I can just hear the screams from certain GS denizens now.

some of the GSes (me, included) wanted one more RAWK nugget to appear (Rush, Triumph, BOC were all namechecked) but this set was pretty great for being so laden with FF's. Synthpop is right up my alley.  The Cure song put it over the top for me and was my BOS.  I would've jettisoned The Kinks song for something Rush, but then again, I often lean that way.  :)  \m/

I enjoyed the set a lot.  Half the tunes were NTM, which is a benefit of being clueless about certain eras/years.  Hey, new music!

BOS tie b/w Robbie Williams and Fatboy Slim.  HM to Counting Crows.

:)

...and it was a nice tribute to Jon Stewart -- I loved that AL did that.

heh, some jock on KUSF uses that in a bumper.  I never knew what it was from.  The man knew how to wear a kilt.

[get off my lawn]meh[/get off my lawn]

totally with you on that.  But then I tend to avoid '90s/'00s sets more often than not.  I don't expect I'll miss much by being out-of-town next week.

Me three. Just not a lot to get excited over in that one.

The first three were snoozy, but the set picked up with the fourth song. It was NTM, but sounded great. Alison Moyet was good, too.  Then it took a breather with the Crowded House and REM, but I always *lurve* hearing the Blur tune. ALWAYS.  Any set with "There’s No Other Way" is pretty much redeemed. And it set up the Nirvana tune nicely, too.  I don't remember much about the last song.  So four out of ten were fab, and a couple were decent.
