Now we know why Dave doesn't honor Mike's b-day requests...he doesn't know the 'phrase that pays'!

Woo Hoo! Stevie's "Wonderin'"! and CKLW 20/20 News on the way!

Totally sweet. Happy Friday!

OK, crankypants time: "Dancin in the Streets" 2 Fridays in a row? If he plays it in the "summer set" too I'm going postal...
-
could you guys hear the difference in sonic quality when Dave went from the CKLW bit, which included the opening notes of Martha & The V's, into his own copy of the song(an otherwise seamless transition, I might add)? It was real clear on my headset.

BOS "I Can't Believe you Love Me". A VIP fave -- Obscure Motown is some of the most wonderful music on Earth.
-
Can't BOS anything yet with so much promise to come, but sweet Diana and Love Child hits the right spot.
-
"from the upper deck of the Rooster Tail" LOL! Supes BOS2, singin' 'bout that tenement slum.
-
How close is this in terms of "What's Going On?" This was definitely progressive at the time.
-
the beginning sounds like the Soups song we heard earlier today. Same players...

"Love Child": late '68
"What's Goin On": early '71
Late '68 is when Motown "discovered" social realism -- Temps did "Cloud Nine" and "Runaway Child" then too.
-
I heard it through the grapevine. Sing it baby..............
Wish I could pump up the volume.......
-
BOS3 Miss Gladys! Preach it!
-
it's a "Grapevine" twin-spin!

Twin Spin!!

checked my Whitburn & you are totally correct, the corresponding chart entry dates are: 10/26/68 (my best friend from HS's b-day) and 3/6/71 (MY b-day!)

and Berry never liked 'em much. But they moved on to better days at Buddha.

Makes me wonder why Marvin had so much trouble getting WGO recorded, which is why I was asking.
Jeezus, this news clip about dead bodies is bizarre!
-
I got a stiff of my own to worry about, right heah!
BOS4 Velvelettes. "Needle in a Haystack", later covered by.. Bananarama? The Belle Starrs?
-
Smooth Smokey! BOS5! If you can want, you can have a hit!

It was the Belle Stars, good one Mike! (Also Dusty did it)

I think the issue with WGO was that Marvin wanted creative (producing/writing) control, whereas "Love Child" was the usual Motown staff creation, "daring" as the lyrics may have been.
-
one of the best guitar openings of all time! Totally joy-inducing! Serotonin don't fail me now!
-
Smooth Smokey! BOS5! If you can want, you can have a hit!
The slyest rhymes, the sharpest suits.
Elegance and eloquence.
(right Mike?)

Yup, that's what I was going to say. He was the musical equivalent to Curt Flood, except his career wasn't sacrificed.
-
BOS -- Marvin by one vote (would have been two if I'd actually voted)...

LOL! Oh my yes.
Elegance in eloquence - for sale or rent or hire
Should I say "yes, I match his best"
Then I would be a liar
Symphonies that soothe the rage
When lovers' hearts catch fire
Like a bird in flight on a hot sweet night
You know you're right just to hold her tight
He soothes it right - makes it outtasite
And everything's good in the world tonight!
When Smokey sings - I hear violins
When Smokey sings - I forget everything

I went the Gladys route.

While we're discussing Motown... on the rack at Starbucks this morning was the "new" Diana Ross CD, Blue, a jazz/standards collection recorded in '73 (in the wake of Lady Sings the Blues) and then shelved -- until now.

That's exactly what it was. The songs for WGO were much looser in structure and Marvin wanted to record them at his own pace -- both anathema to Gordy's bottom-line ways of thinking. I wonder if WGO would ever have been released had Stevie Wonder not won emancipation at age 21 the year prior.

Any of you have a comprehensive Motown collection I could burn from? I used to have a multi-album set, like 5 or 6. From the '70s, came in a blue box, can still picture it. Got rid of it early on and totally regret it now.

Most of my old Motown is vinyl!

LOL! Me too -- in the '80s during "Big Chill"-mania, I bought all the vinyl "Anthology" sets... Tempts, Supes, Marvin, Martha & the Vandellas. Have yet to replace 'em with CDs, tho' I do have What's Goin' On? in that format.
Ali, was that "The Motown Story", with narration between the songs?
