Ginger leads off with John Fogerty.

Overliteralist at work: Why would anyone willingly "shuffle off to Buffalo"?

Overliteralist at work: Why would anyone willingly "shuffle off to Buffalo"?
The original song "Shuffle off to Buffallo", from the early part of the 20th century, was referring to the fact that Niagara Falls was a popular honeymoon spot (people would go to Niagara and never see the falls, nudge-nudge wink-wink). So Fogerty is referencing an old song.
-
Philomath (Filomath? Filofax?) is where I'll go. Beats shuffling off to Buffalo, I guess.
-
"When the world is a monster, 'bout to swallow you whole..."
Anyone besides me been feeling like that more than usual lately? Heat waves and Stage 2 alerts on top of everything else...
BOS #2 REM.
I think I'll only give BOS votes to bands with 3 letter names today.

Oh, I'd never heard of it -- thanks!
Meanwhile, BOS1 (I'm being optimistic) to "Can't Get There From Here," nicking a lick from the Pretenders perhaps but so finely.
-
This PT track has the same kind of production that Phil Collins gave Eric Clapton that year. I wonder if we'll get "Forever Man" in this set.

Well that lasted about 40 seconds. Big fat BOS to Pete, "Second Hand Love". I really think White City holds up well, but none of our 10@10 friends checks in with it very often.

revo-man, revo-man, revo-man.
Let's hope not.
Hey Mark: TFF is 3 letters.
-
Someone's gonna call it a Katrina, but BOS to TFF; I can never get tired of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." So evocative for me of that period, that state of mind, that aesthetic.

phil produced clapton? didn't know that...i wouldn't mind hearing "revah-man," actually.

still sounds good and always reminds me of the movie Real Genius.

I was just about to refresh the KBCO "just played" list when I began to notice the songs that preceeded the set. This strikes me as a pretty good half hour or so of music for regular commercial programming:
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
How We Operate - Gomez
Hotel California - Eagles
Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots
Stir It Up - Bob Marley
Paralyzed - Rock Kills Kid
Veronica - Elvis Costello
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
-
Oreo Cookie Blues -- a new one on me. But one for Dave's next food set.

A younger-skewing KFOG, if you will. Not sure if Boulder/Denver has an equivalent to Live 105.
-
yay for live aid! the best rock concert(s) ever. kudos to phil for taking the concorde.
-
coulda done w/out Til Tuesday on this Tuesday. Hush hush indeed.

i think i feel the same way about "voices carry" as gaz feel about "everybody wants to rule..."

That was such a great 'bad' movie! With a too short appearance by Deborah Foreman, the object of Nick Cage's affections (and mine too) in Valley Girl. Val Kilmer's Chris tries to hit on her & she replies: "Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis?"
He says, "not right now."
And then she turns on her heel and says, "A girl's gotta have her standards."
-

Well, keep it down.

"HE SAID! SHUT UP! HE SAID! SHUT UP!"
Damn, who coulpd have drawn a line from that to Magnolia?

I actually thought it was the best of that slew of science-geek comedies that came out that summer (which came to be be known collectively as My Real Weird Genius Science Project).

speaking of hammering spikes with your penis, as if on cue, it's Percy!
Little by little, I can breathe again... y'know that almost sounds like he trying to meet Deborah Foreman's dare. :P :P :P

And in case you didn't know, Valley Girl and Real Genius were both directed by Martha Coolidge.

Far from my favorite Better Off Dead moment, but wow, what a hilarious movie that was. Still in my all-time Top 10.
-
VHM early Chris Isaak, before the Orbison/Ricky Nelson hybrid thing became rote.

According to IMDb, he's scripting the remake of Porky's, which has the mind-blowingly scary production tag of Howard Stern Presents - Porky's.

I never really thought about it, myself.

no. i didn't ever think about it. i figured the lyrics were as elusive as the video.
