I was inspired to open this thread when I heard Neil Young's incredible ode to Richard Nixon, Campaigner, on the local NPR station's Sunday night music show. Don't know that I've ever heard Dave ever play it in a 10@10, but it'd be great to hear in this one. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I expect the usual suspects: Randy Newman, Alice Cooper, "Harry Truman", Cream's "Politician". Would love Steve Goodman's "Election Year Rag" and the (admittedly but unjustly obscure) Foremen, whose "What Did You Do on Election Day?" is a small gem.
-
I'd rather get Marvin Gaye's "You're the Man" and James Brown's "Funky President (People It's Bad)."

Remind me to play you the Dynamiters' "Rock'N'Roll President" (a 1976 rarity) when you're here next month. As well as a satirical early John Denver nugget, "The '68 Nixon".

a couple of my co-workers said they tried to early vote, but the lines (in SF) were too long already before 7 AM

Hrm. I tried to do early voting on Saturday at City Hall -- figured I'd pop in on my way to the gym and get it done. There was a 2-hour-plus wait. Seemed kinda pointless; in 17 years of voting in SF I've never waited more than 10 minutes at my local polling place, even in Presidential years. So I'll vote on my way home from work.
We really need to do what every other civilized country does and have Election Day on a Saturday.

I voted by mail a couple weeks ago (that's how Oregon does it--no polling places, everyone votes by mail). But I talked with a friend who lives in Sausalito this morning. She votes in Marin City, and said she had to wait about 15 minutes to get into a voting booth, which is unheard of in her area. I'm hoping that means we can expect record turnout all over the place.
And if you want to talk about civilized voting procedures, this "vote by mail" method is great. No pressure, you can mark your ballot whenever you have time, go do some research if you're not sure on an issue, and so long as you get it into the mail by two days before the election, or into a designated drop box (most city offices have one) up until the usual 8pm on election day, you're set. Most folks I know around here voted last week or before. And it goes along with the trend toward early voting we've seen this time around.

aargh! That prog rock fanfare for the common man shtick!
-
ooo! ELP, "Fanfare for the Common Man"! BOS and proxy of shray!
-
LBJ into ELP--a nice start indeed (and a shoutout to the amazing Aaron Copland).
Here's what we heard four years and two days ago:
Alice Cooper Elected
Creedence Clearwater Revival Fortunate Son
Pete Townshend Won't Get Fooled Again
Bruce Springsteen Chimes of Freedom
Clash Know Your Rights
Chi-Lites (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People
Grateful Dead U.S. Blues
Neil Young Rockin' In The Free World
Temptations Ball of Confusion
Beatles Revolution 1
-
i voted by mail about a month ago. i agree with urth's comments on it, especially the part about being able to research candidates/issues.

In my first post-graduation house, we often played this music at full volume the day after a party. The goal was to irritate hungover people, which it did quite effectively. It became known as the "Traditionary Music". Silly memories...
By the way, I heard "Vote for Me" by Joe Walsh on KPIG. Quite amusing, but probably too long to get played here.

Yeah, and this last two minutes of so have really sucked. And I like ELP. For those of you listening at home, I'm talking about the "flutter-tongue" synth sound with the distortion turned up to 11.

TANC. One summer when I was in college, I threw a big party at my parents house for all my dorm pals while the folks were away on vacation (natch). My folks then lived in a good-sized house out in the country in the Sierra foothills, a great place to get one's youthful party on. Had about 30+ people stay over, and people were crashed out all over the place, inside, outside, under trees, on the deck, etc. So one of my high school friends dragged my speakers out onto the deck at about 6am as the sun was coming up, and blasted this song. The people who were sleeping out doors said it was just wild to hear the horn fanfare at the beginning come wafting thru the trees. And yeah, some of the more hungover folks were not so charitable.

would love to hear some Joe Walsh here. I don't know "Vote for me" but didn't he (sort of) run for VP a while back? like in the Reagan years?
-
LBJ into ELP--a nice start indeed (and a shoutout to the amazing Aaron Copland).
My college radio station signed on in the morning with a classical show, The Breakfast Concert, and it always began with a pastoral thing from Copland -- "Appalachian Spring"? Lovely.

I was in line just before 7am in Alameda, out the door by 7:17 (voter 10). The line was getting pretty long by the time I left.

I thought he ran for prez in '92 (?), the year after he had "Ordinary Average Guy" out.

is that who this strident song is by? the arrangement make it sound like something you'd hear at an Up With People gathering, or accomanying music to some Disney fireworks show.

Per Wikipedia:
Walsh ran a mock campaign for President in 1980, promising to make "Life's Been Good" the new national anthem if he won, and running on a platform of "Free Gas For Everyone." Though Walsh was not old enough to actually assume the office, he wanted to raise public awareness of the election. He then ran again for vice president in 1992 and was unsuccessful.
I remember the presidential shtick in '80, but I'd forgotten about '92.

your avatar is scaring me, princess. Have you seen "I've Loved you So Long" -- French film with Kristin Scott-Thomas? It opened here last week to some rapturous reviews.

We need more than just one victory.

Prayin' for it all day, and fighting for it all night
Give us just one victory, and we'll be all right.
BOS2 Todd. Love this song.

i don't think it's premiered here yet. i'll keep an eye for it.
taxidermia is a great film! i don't know if that's the english title. it's definitely...out there. but not too far. those wacky hungarians!

Dave's worked extra hard on this set -- some of these clips I've not heard before.
Honest-to-goodness, I've no idea who this is.
-
Anyone recognize the voice of that last clip?
AND WHERE THE HELL DID THE STREAM JUST GO?!?!?! Just as the X tune started.
-
We need more than just one victory.
ditto! :)
thanks for the tapes! they arrived on friday, and i plan to pick them up tomorrow.
-
BOS, Alice. Predictable, but classic.
-
I had to Google -- that was X, "The New World", an ATBB, I'm assuming. BOS3.
VHM Alice, a staple.
-
Boo. The music is coming in 1-second bits now, surrounded by 30-second silent bits.
-
Fershlugginer buffering notwithstanding (there it goes again, dammit), this appears to be the first time Dave's played X in a set (at least within the scope of the DB. Only "X" group currently listed is XTC.

I WANT TO BE ELECTED!!!!!!!!!
-
I got back late - just in time to hear NOTHING. Christ on a clam shell, how hard is streaming radio to do?
-
Couldn't tell you about that last clip, but this one's a voice I know.
-
Mike, can you repost that alternate link from last week?
-
Dave's feeling hopeful. And avoiding a lot of the usual suspects. Something really IS in the air.
-
is it wrong if i prefer petty's version?
-
Relaunched the player, which meant I missed Elected entirely. Now hearing Thunderclap Newman, but it's still buffering. Jeeezus H. Christ.

Widow Media isn't letting me use that one. :( Cannot play the file, firewall settings blah blah. Back to hearing about the fabulous Nutcracker yet again. :(
-
Couldn't tell you about that last clip, but this one's a voice I know.
I thought I heard Gerald Ford in there for a second, and if so, it would've been one of his more lucid and inspiring moments, from what I know about him.
-
Hey, I'm hearing Green Day now. Sounding good!
-
Woo Hoo! BOS3 or 4 Green Day "American Idiot"
-
Heard about 15 seconds total of Something In the Air. Now I think it's Green Day, from American Idiot. Yep.
-
BOS2, Green Day -- "mind-bleep America"
-
Just realized--no Wayback today? Or is he in line at the polls?
ETA: Or Mshray either. Hope they're tuned in whereever they are.
Btw, the buffering seems to have abated. Heard about 2/3 of the Green Day tune.
-

I'd like to bring up something that I discovered when Mike had his pumpkin avatar. If you link to a URL instead of a file for the image, it doesn't have to be constricted in size. That way, if it's interesting, you can view the icon in a higher rez. I would encourage us to play that game.

BOS4 Ms Nyro, "Save the Country" -- tho' the 5-D's version woulda been swell.
-
Just joining online, but have been listening while doing some work stuff. Late night last night, Mshray and I met Tinka for a brew after work, then Mark and I attended the Experience Hendrix All-Star tribute concert at Masonic Hall Nob Hill. WOW! Even shook hands after with a few Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famers! More later in the concert thread. Joe Walsh for Pres, Billie Jo for VP, Todd for Sec of State, Alice Cooper for Defense Sec!
-
i already bos'd todd, but i wish it had gone for laura instead.

Happily, I was in line for 30 seconds. Then I went out to lunch and was in line a whole lot longer. :/
Yay for "Save the Country," shame Dave went with Laura Nyro's version instead of the 5D's cleaned-up take. I've long lamented Laura's unwillingness to pick one tempo and stick with it.

Anyone down there able to record this one? Please? (I'd try via the audio out on my computer, but the likelihood of buffering makes that not so ideal.)

I did my bit today by heading down to Palo Alto Obama headquarters at 6am to make a few hours of calls -- hoping for a landslide!!

For years I mondegreened that as "the hippie's eyes never lie"!

And once again, I'm a dope, because it's clearly solo Pete.

OK, so I can't count. More likely the solo WGFA is the wrapper on this one. Nice long set, too. (Wish I'd been able to hear the middle part.)

BTW, voted around 9:30AM in West San Jose at the nearby Korean Baptist Church. No wait whatsoever -- perfect for slackers like me.
One funny thing -- you were given the choice to vote in one of those flimsy-looking "booths" (tables w/ cardboard privacy walls), or at big tables w/ folding chairs, or on some crazy overstuffed couches with coffee tables in front of them.
(If you zoom in, you can see who I voted for!)
Then went over to $tarbuck$ for our free coffee. What? 10 minutes left to brew? Ok, we'll wait.
Hope to head over to Santana Row for Ben & Jerry's tonight. Hope the lines not too crazy.

Nice work Darryl, but aren't you influencing our vote? ;)
BTW, I heard on newsradio this morn that its illegal to provide favors for voting, so Starbucks and B&J's legally should give coffee, ice cream to anyone that asks! Woo-hoo!
-
Right -- KGO-TV at 11 last night mentioned in the teaser that "it might be in violation of some federal voting laws", but then didn't follow-up, simply saying Starbucks and Krispy Kreme were giving away free coffee and donuts to anyone who voted.
But another story I heard or read said you didn't even have to vote, just go up and ask.
I believe the fine print in the Starbucks commercial said "Just walk up and say 'I voted' and receive a free brewed coffee." So I guess they saying they don't care if you lie.
-
And a fine bonus track as well: Allen Toussaint's original version of "Yes We Can Can."

Here's a great remix/mashup of the Lee Dorsey version w/ Barack's speech:

Yes, I believe the law is no gifts in exchange for a specific vote (person or measure), but promoting the general idea of voting is probably okay, but just as in any other contest: "no purchase necessary."

I saw the Iggles in Nov '79 in Cincinnati*. At one point Glenn Frey stepped up to the mike & said, "We think Joe Walsh should RUN For PRESIDENT!!!"
bawwah dah bahdah, ba bahdah ba dah BAH BAH!
*I was visiting a friend from my exchange student summer, and several of her friends that we bumped into at this show called out, "Hey, are you going to The Who next week?" Fortunately she wasn't - you'll recall the tragic events of that show.

I had to Google -- that was X, "The New World", an ATBB, I'm assuming. BOS3.
VHM Alice, a staple.
You GUYS! I have been begging for that X song for years & have even quoted y'all here on the board some of the lyrics.
After this one I made up my mind to be extra late for work & hear the entire set in the car.
And what's with the Farnham bashing? That was the perfect song to get from Fanfare to Just 1 Victory (imho).

Couldn't tell you about that last clip, but this one's a voice I know.
I thought I heard Gerald Ford in there for a second, and if so, it would've been one of his more lucid and inspiring moments, from what I know about him.
I do believe you're right! The one before Carter must have been Lucid Ford. But strange no one else recognised his voice?
Okay, that's another one that I recognized immediately while listening in the car. Sorry I wasn't here to be more helpful in real time.

TANC: Just tuned in to the archived Idiot's Delight from last weekend over on WFUV.com, and Vin led the set with Todd's Just One Victory. Nice. If anything else of note pops up I'll comment over on the Internet Radio thread for this week, but thought it bore mentioning here 'cuz of the Todd reference.

thanks for the reminder, I always forget to check out Scelsa, and with CGSS gone, I have some listening-hours to fill with something other than WLNG or 'CDX.

For archival purposes, can a mod fix the title of this thread from "Oct." to "Nov."? Thx.

Done. And I'm a little redfaced, since I was the one who opened the thread in the first place. Ooops.
